I'm really disappointed that Apple is going to these depths to try take out the competition. It's a 3rd party case Apple, Samsung has covered themselves by pulling before it was sold. It's time to get back to the lab and work on some new Mac Pro stuff isn't it?

Did not Apple copy the magnet function off Blackberry?

Blackberry phones have the magnet function in its cover that do the same thing as Apple Smart Cover before iPad were produced.

The only viable tablet on the market after nearly two years.

iPhone 4S brings Siri to everyone. Changes the market dynamics once again.

Industry "ultrabooks" can barely keep up with the MBA.

The list goes on.

Anyone who thinks Apple is resorting to litigation because of a lack of ideas or some sort of magical confusion about what to do next (or non-interest in doing anything new) needs their head checked.

All Apple has been doing for the last few years is innovating. It's really the rest of the industry that's been asleep at the wheel. They haven't figured out the same game that Apple's already figured out several years in advance.
I disagree Siri changes nothing it is just Voice controls plus Artificial Intelligence, I have found that it works worse google voice control for just performing commands, inputting text, and searching for things to be honest. Not saying Sire ain't cool, Just my opinion and I think it has a long way to go before it is fully useful and something more than gimmick. As for ultrabooks while I would agree that the idea isn't anything special, the end result of the Ultrabook movement will mean that average user will finally be able to buy a fast, well built, thin and light laptop without spending an Arm and a Leg. Also Ultrabooks will make SSD's standard thus driving down the price of SSD's and Flash memory. So if anything the "Ultrabook" has larger effect on market dynamics than anything Apple has released so far.
Edit: You can't ignore the facts though the Samsung Galaxy (especially the Galaxy S2) devices are selling like hotcakes and so far customer satisfaction has been through the roof with the latest batch of Samsung products and honestly that makes Apple afraid that they might lose customers because people will think that Samsung's Galaxy Products will offer them a better experience or more compelling features. I'm bot going to try to argue witch set of products is better, but I don't think it is hard to believe that Apple Views Samsung as a Threat, so why not get rid of a threat. Also Threatening Samsung with lawsuits is a good way to get cheaper prices on components such as flash memory.

I think we have the moral high ground. Samsung copies everything we do and would love to live in the Apple/Mac/iPhone/iPod world. We came up with the first PC smaller than a gymnasium, GUI, and first aluminum case for a laptop.

WE? I didn't know you were Apple. This is why people get scared away from apple products because of people like this.

I was being sarcastic and copying some Apple wingnuts I have seen in the past who think everything originates from Apple and the rest are, well, copycats. :)

That's different. When Apple copies it doesn't count.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery... the truth is out Samsung is in love with Apple.
For any common thing, I'd agree, but at this level, between two megalodon-sized companies, I'd say it more that Samsung sees how much cash Apple's doing and wishes to steal some of it by confusing consumers. Furthermore, too much copying makes loose complete credibility of a company's ability to innovate and create.

Samsung's really gone too far this time.

Way too confusing ...

The third party company (Anymode) that makes the covers is privately held and the CEO is the nephew of the Samsung chairman and CEO. The parent company of Anymode is Youngbo engineering, who's CEO is also the CEO of Samsung himself ...

Basically it's these are all companies spun off and owned by the Samsung family (meant to overcome legalities??)

Let's analyze this --

[1] The third party company (Anymode) that makes the covers is privately held and the CEO is the nephew of the Samsung chairman and CEO.

First, is he the nephew of Samsung chairman or the Samsung CEO(s)??? Because, these 2 guys are not the same person. Chairman is Lee Kun-hee and CEO is Gee-Sung Choi. Also note that there are different CEOs. J S Shin is also a CEO of South-West Asia operation So, please clarify which top-dog in the family is related to the Anymode CEO.

That particular "he", the so-called nephew of multiple CEO and Chairman is this person: http://www.anymode.net/company/?mid=ceo

[2] The parent company of Anymode is Youngbo engineering, who's CEO is also the CEO of Samsung himself...

You are saying CEO of Youngbo engineering is also the CEO of Samsung

Sangyong Kim (http://www.youngboeng.com/english/about/about_ceo.asp) is the chairman and CEO of Youngbo engineering. So, you saying Sangyong Kim is also the CEO of Samsung. Do anyone know who this person is?? YES, he is the CEO of Anymode - CEOs of Anymode and Youngbo are same. Press mentions him as "Sang-yong Kim" aka Sangyong Kim. I must be blind, coz you saying that Sangyong Kim is the CEO of Samsung. But how can Sangyong Kim be the CEO of Samsung when he is also the nephew of Samsung's CEO?

WHAT???

I will wait for your reply.

ohh, I almost forgot, so much for innovation:

Bath tub??

InCase Convertible??

MacRumors want to make money. The more traffic they get, the more money they make. Putting a misleading photo in a news article generates a lot more traffic than not doing it.

Forget about macrumors closing the thread, is all I'm saying.

Macrumors is a biased media with a truck load of biased "readers" who are in a perpetual state of outrage against Apple's competitors. That's part of its charm :)

Speaking of using magnets before Apple, there are the Droid Multimedia and Car Docks that turn their phones into different modes of operation.

Heck, my kitchen refrigerator uses magnets to hold the door closed, and some probably use them to sense when to turn on their light. That's probably where someone got the Smart Cover idea. Say, Samsung makes appliances... I wonder if they have a patent on... oh never mind :)

I love the Samsung can't innovate topics yet most of Apples products are assembled with products Innovated by Samsung.

A little detail missed by the true believers ;)

Don't get me wrong, I love Apple products. I have a Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, iMac, Mac Mini, iPad, iPhone and two Apple TV's. Not to mention thousands of dollars in apps and media from iTunes and the App store. So I am clearly not a hater. But I am also not delusional either. My lips are not firmly on Apple's you know what. Apple puts together some awesome products. But there would be no awesome Apple products if companies like Samsung didn't innovate the parts going into our iPads and iPhones. When Ipad 3 and its amazing 2500 x 1500 or whatever it is screen comes out, who do you think made that screen even possible? Companies like Samsung.

So, its time for Apple to get a grip and stop this ridiculous nonsense. Companies do have to protect their IP's, I get that, but this is getting just plain stupid. Pretty soon Apple is going to sue Samsung because the boxes they use to ship their Galaxy tabs use cardboard, just like Apple

Let's jsut say I'd be more impressed with Apple's case against Samsung if the iPad didn't contain so many Samsung parts.

You play dumb if you want too but you know the magnet sleep function is from Blackberry and hopefully Apple gets sued for it.

We don't know what Apple's claims are, they haven't filed a lawsuit and notices aren't public. We don't know what product this is referencing and we don't know what IP Apple holds that could make that product infringe on their portfolio.

Basically, this is a big flamebait article.

And this is the problem with this article. That picture should not be included as that case was not made by Samsung or ever sold. The only reason to include that picture or any mention of those cases is to inflame the audience of this website. It is actually pretty shameful in my opinion.

Yep. Here's how the article reads: "We don't know the details of the issue, but here's some speculation and a photo that has nothing to do with anything. Discuss!"

wow, straight up copying

wow, straight up failure to read the article

Anyways, I laugh at the people who say they want to boycott Samsung for copying Apple. The only groups of people who can actually boycott Samsung are the Amish and the remaining uncontacted tribes in the Amazonian jungle. Samsung products are in practically everything you use - including your beloved Apple products.

Eh? I'm agreeing that magnets have been used to magically activate things for as long as magnets have been around.

(As for smartphones, one of my favorite examples was an HTC WM model where the stylus was held in place by a magnet. When you removed the stylus during a phone call, it automatically activated the notepad app, since you were most likely going to jot something down. Very clever.)

Okay my mistake.

so Apple is now going for the look and feel approach, since the software patents didn't get them the result they wanted

Update: Samsung has released an official statement on the issue, noting that the term "case" was misinterpreted in early media reports as referring to protective case accessories. In fact, the term was referring to the external design of the devices themselves.

*sigh*

Can't wait to see what IP they turn up in Australia, let's hope it's not just some subjective trade dress claims.

Yep, back to the same shenanigans as they used in Germany and were turned down for in the Netherlands.

I guess we get to argue again about how "Samsung blatantly copied Apple's design!" with the same discussion we've had countless times about how such a thing is in the eye of the beholder.
