Wheel$.. or GPU

..and I don't want to hear about CNC milling costs.. the MacBook Pro chassis would be priced in the stupidsphere if the same logic applies.

Whatever.

4 Wheel$: $699
1 Mac Mini: $799

Can I save $300 and let Apple keep the feet? Nothing wrong with peg legs.

At some point I'll get a Cheese Grater II .. but $699 extra spent on it will be for computing speed, not speed across the floor.

Trust me, some of the pros have comented on these prices as well. Herb Zevush, of Zebra Productions (https://services.creativecow.net/s/1033/zebra-productions) described them on creativecow.net as "ridiculously priced".

Having said that, there's certainly a subset of pros that are relatively (compared to consumers) much less price sensitive, and used to the relatively higher prices for pro gear (though not necessarily quite this relatively high).
Of course they’ll be pros that think they’re overpriced but will still buy them. I remember working in an office and they spent $900 for toner cartridges for the printer. Myself used to spending $30 for printer ink cartridges thought that was insane but my boss didn’t even think twice about putting the credit card down. In reality someone making a high six-figure or even seven-figure salary isn’t concerned about spending $700 for wheels.

This is awesome, it's why I have Apple stock. There are probably a lot of people who actually pay for insanely overpriced stuff like this.

There probably aren’t, which is why the wheels are priced at the level they are. It’s an optional accessory, and a low-volume and niche one at that, and the price reflects this.

I will also point out that I wouldn’t construe this as price gouging either, in that this is not a highly-demanded good that has had its price increased to an obscene amount.

This is a (totally discretionary) item that is being sold by a high-end electronics company at an obscene amount. Consider it luxury pricing.

Not that I would buy one even if I had a Mac Pro and all the money in the world, but I do see the logic behind why Apple would charge the prices they do. Simple economics.

There is no such things as bad news ... as long as people continue talking about your brand.
  • The complaining group will never buy the MacPro
  • Pros who need the machine are not affected by all this negativism
In both cases Apple wins.
That's a tired old trope.

Apple today introduced a Mac Pro Wheels kit designed for the Mac Pro, which adds wheels to the machine after purchase. The kit is priced at $699.

When adding wheels to the Mac Pro when making an initial purchase, Apple charges $400, but the standalone kit to be used after purchase is $300 more because the pre-purchase price includes the price of removing the $300 feet.

Apple says the kit includes a 1/4-inch to 4mm hex bit for installing the wheels, but additional tools are necessary. The purchase price includes a total of four wheels and an installation guide.

Apple also offers a Mac Pro Feet Kit for those who ordered wheels but want to swap back to standard feet. The Feet Kit is priced at $300.

Mac Pro users who want to purchase the wheels add-on kit or the feet add-on kit can do so from Apple's online store.

I like how they are priced at $699 so as to not make them look too expensive.

Of course not! You have to buy the complementary package for that.

Wheel-care, now including super special Oil Max for Pro Lubrication.

MacPro (and monitor) are really for idiots who don't pay for their own gear and show-off companies that don't care about the bottomline. Never seen such ridiculousness from Apple.

Not so sure this is true for the Mac Pro itself. As a professional with the need for all that power you probably don't want to build your own Hackintosh. The monitor stand, wheels, and probably the monitor itself is likely pushing it a bit.

GTFO!

If Jony Ive was still doing Apple promotionals, he’d come out with something like:”This is the wheel, but totally reimagined and reinvented.”

Not one person here crying about the price can afford the Macpro in any meaningful manner. Thus the wheel kit is not targeted for your pocket. A lot of people can barely afford an iPhone if it wasn't sold in attractive plans split up in monthly payments spread through 1-2 years.

Same argument works this way;
Why buy LV when Target sells cheap clothes?

Many of you guys don't understand positioning, luxury and branding.
I can afford it. It costs much less than my monthly income.
I just don’t need it...

but the point is not if you can afford it or not. The point is that the wheels should be included in such an high priced computer, and if you are selling wheels as an option the price shouldn’t go north of $99 since you are already making a good profit out of the computer itself.

Perhaps I’m old fashioned, but I’m of the opinion that if I’m buying wheels for my computer for $700, all the tools needed for the installation should damn well be in the box. I bought a Nest thermostat for less than half the cost of these wheels and Google was nice enough to include a screwdriver — which was all that was needed for the installation.

I disagree with this entirely. People, regardless of whether they are buying $700 casters for their computers, already own screwdrivers. What's the point generating more waste?
