It's about time. Google gives out free (at cost) hardware to sell data services/advertising. Makes sense for Apple to give out free software to sell hardware. I'm still waiting for Apple's true counterattack: ad-free, non-tracking search. Google is attacking Apple's hardware business by giving everything away for free. Apple needs to return the favor.

Why would Apple go through all that trouble when all they have to do is make Duck Duck Go the default search engine for their iDevices?

Out of everyone here, you should like that option the most. Apple doesn't have to spend a dime, and it allows people to use Google's services without having to provide their social security number, photo ID, medical records, and retinal scan, which'll be used against them to more easily sort out desirables from the undesirables when Eric Schmidt enacts his future population culling program for his North Korean overlords.

Also, it's good to have you back, man. Where you been?

What are you disappointed about?

All the functionality and features that got removed! There isn't even rich text format support any more! These aren't the original iWork products. They're ports of the iOS software with less functionality than what Mac OS X iWork users are already used to.

Darn! I use iWork '09 of course and the day I installed OS X Mavericks no update for it showed in the App Store so I purchased the new Pages

Oh well at least I got all the other updates for free.

Please be specific on what features are missing.

Text flow between text boxes, ruler guides, rtf file support, page rearrange/delete, mail merge, outline features, and on and on. Go read the reviews on the Mac App Store, as there are full listings of lost functionality right there in some users' reviews.

It doesn't seem to work for iLife, just iWork.

I got all the iWork apps, but none of the iLife ones, even though they were installed from a legitimately purchased DVD. :/

App Store does all the upgrades. It worked flawlessly for me, downloading all the new iWorks and iLife apps. Note that it will not replace your old iWorks apps, but put new ones into the /Applications folder. So you will have both versions at the same time.

App store shows each app as costing $19.99 and offers nothing in the upgrade section. Do you just click to buy and then it installs it for free or do you see it listed as free (or available as an update)?

Can someone please confirm that they actually upgraded from iPhoto 09 to the new version for free? I have 09 installed, and I can not get the free upgrade. It wants to charge me $14.99.

EDIT: Strange Garage Band shows up as free, and I don't even have that installed...

It seems Logic Pro and FCP have been left out... Maybe too expensive to give out for free?

If I remember correctly FCP X was available only from the App Store from the start, so it is not possible to have legitimate users who got it outside of the App Store.

Logic 9 was sold before the App Store existed (as "boxed" copies), and then was added to the App Store. Logic Pro X was available only from the App Store. While they could give people who bought boxed copies of Logic 9 an App Store license for Logic Pro 9, I think they're probably pushing for people to buy and use Logic Pro X so it doesn't make as much sense.

I bought FCP X. What I hope is that for the next major version of FCP, if they are going to charge for it, they should be offering upgrade pricing instead of doing what they did with Logic Pro X (make everyone pay full price if they want to upgrade). The best possible situation is if they never charge for FCP updates again, though :) It would make sense, somewhat, because FCP helps sell Mac Pros (and Macs in general). I'm hoping the Logic Pro X situation was because they didn't want to sort out how to handle upgrades from Logic 9 boxed, and that they will have upgrade pricing in the future.

Same here.

I'm willing to bet that iWork/iLife will be completely free for everyone by next week if too many people are having issues getting the free upgrades.

Ars Technica had a couple of complaints about a few missing features from the latest version of iWorks.

I doubt a lot of what's missing is a dealbreaker for most people, but it's not something being made up by various people in a transparent attempt at bashing Apple or anything.

Thanks for the link to the info. Interesting. I think I will keep a copy of the old iWork Pages and Numbers around. I will still do the free update but still use the old ones for the time being.

Have to wait and see if Apple correct this situation with the new iWork.

Meanwhile, Microsoft execs are meeting to determine if they should give out unbootable surface tablets for free so people will buy Windows and Office...

I see all the updates but I'm still getting the same error:

I have iWorks '09 but I only see the option to buy Pages, Numbers, etc.

Is there a trick to getting them upgraded free? There is no upgrade mechanism in the apps themselves and the app store lists them as $19.99 each.

I purchased iWork 09 as a DVD. It is installed but when I log on to the App Store it tells me to pay 19.99 for them. Is this normal? Or will that be updated soon?
Thanks

Try reinstalling iWork 9.3.

Worked for me.
