If they're cheating the system by using the free demo to get the full upgrade, then no, that's not kosher in the least. I don't have any issues with people finding other ways to get software they've already paid for, but if they didn't pay for it, they obviously shouldn't get it.
I don't think this free for everyone thing is right, Apples website still says
"* Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are free on the Mac App Store for qualifying Mac computers purchased on or after October 1, 2013. OS X Mavericks required. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID.
** GarageBand is free on the Mac App Store for all compatible Mac computers with OS X Mavericks. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available with an in-app purchase. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID."
So it seems like it is just for new computers, which is what they said in the keynote 2 days ago.... Except for Garage Band strangely enough.
But it no longer matters because Apple does not care. People are going to do what they feel is the right thing.
Allowing unethically obtained software intentionally downloaded from users is a bit extreme.
As much as I love this, getting Aperture for free...
Let's not forget Apple is a hardware company, where Microsoft needs their licensed software to make money.
Microsoft makes money selling software, not hardware. Try to install Mac OS X on non Apple hardware and sell it. Let's see how easy going Apple is about that.
Wow, first disabling those stupid iOS 7 animations in 7.0.3, then to find out that iWork supports right-to-left text and now this? Apple, you just might have won me over after being disappointed for a long time.
Yeah, it's a weird situation altogether. I dunno. Maybe Apple wants to give everyone free copies of iWork, but, for convoluted reasons, doesn't want to make it look like they're just handing them out to people.
On a guess, I'd say it's because they don't want to undercut their "buy new Apple hardware, get free iWork" offer.
I personally have never gone in and heard, "Well we could've fixed this 48 hours ago, but your warranty expired."
Don't get too ahead of yourself. Have you actually used the new iWork yet?
Yeah! And what about us G4 iBook users?
The G4 while a nice machine, can't run the MAS, why can't my paid for Mac box set be converted to the store with 10.6.8, as if I got it from MAS? Why do I have to have a free update I can't run to get my paid software into the store like everyone else that can run OSXM? Seems lame.. Cmon Hackerwayne!
First of all: To get all the updates, you must be running OS X Mavericks
Get the Aperture trial from the source: Apple
If after installing you can't see the updates, the trick that worked for me is to change the system language to english -> Reboot -> Check for updates again -> Change the language to your preferred one -> Reboot.
BTW, I love this new philosophy.
Why do people always take Steve Jobs quotes out of context to justify something?
All the functionality and features that got removed! There isn't even rich text format support any more! These aren't the original iWork products. They're ports of the iOS software with less functionality than what Mac OS X iWork users are already used to.
You are correct. It's free for those who bought a new Mac on or after October 1, 2013 and never owned the software.
But for those of us who have already owned the software we should be eligible for the free updates as well.
Understand the difference?
Help me please !
I have a legit copy of aperture 3.4.5 installed on my MacBook Pro, and I can't have a free upgrade at version 3.5
Why ?
I did buy it at an Apple store, I still have the original DVD !
Are you running 10.9?
"We like to believe that our users are honest, even if that belief is in vain."
And Microsoft's business model is based on the opposite. One of the thousand reasons I love Apple's products and philosophy.
And one of the thousand reasons why Microsoft will always be like the dickish older brother in Weird Science.
