While there are some companies that use pirated software most know if they are audited they will get caught and lose credibility and incur large fines. With ISO 9001 certification and other certifications honesty is of the utmost importance.

If they're cheating the system by using the free demo to get the full upgrade, then no, that's not kosher in the least. I don't have any issues with people finding other ways to get software they've already paid for, but if they didn't pay for it, they obviously shouldn't get it.

But it no longer matters because Apple does not care. People are going to do what they feel is the right thing.

Wow, first disabling those stupid iOS 7 animations in 7.0.3, then to find out that iWork supports right-to-left text and now this? Apple, you just might have won me over after being disappointed for a long time.

I don't think this free for everyone thing is right, Apples website still says

"* Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are free on the Mac App Store for qualifying Mac computers purchased on or after October 1, 2013. OS X Mavericks required. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID.
** GarageBand is free on the Mac App Store for all compatible Mac computers with OS X Mavericks. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available with an in-app purchase. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID."

So it seems like it is just for new computers, which is what they said in the keynote 2 days ago.... Except for Garage Band strangely enough.

You are correct. It's free for those who bought a new Mac on or after October 1, 2013 and never owned the software.

But for those of us who have already owned the software we should be eligible for the free updates as well.

Understand the difference?

Yeah, it's a weird situation altogether. I dunno. Maybe Apple wants to give everyone free copies of iWork, but, for convoluted reasons, doesn't want to make it look like they're just handing them out to people.

On a guess, I'd say it's because they don't want to undercut their "buy new Apple hardware, get free iWork" offer.

Allowing unethically obtained software intentionally downloaded from users is a bit extreme.

It can't be stopped. It makes sense for them to throw in the towel. I don't know how many people would go so far as to do this trusting that their software is "clean" but DRM and other methods don't stop people from doing the wrong thing so it makes sense for Apple to offer this. I'm not condoning it myself and I don't like it to be honest about it because I buy my software but at the end of the day Apple is trying to bring in more users and this was a smart move. Besides, just my opinion but Apple may be getting tired of being perceived as a "money grabbing company" and this may be their way of giving back, who knows?

What's even better is this is the one thing Samsung can't copy. They don't make software for the consumer market.

As much as I love this, getting Aperture for free :)...

Let's not forget Apple is a hardware company, where Microsoft needs their licensed software to make money.

Microsoft makes money selling software, not hardware. Try to install Mac OS X on non Apple hardware and sell it. Let's see how easy going Apple is about that.

Xbox/Kinect, Surface/RT/2, Nokia acquisition, Zune/HD, PC accessories (ie, original optical mouse, wave keyboard, etc.)...

While it may be true that Microsoft's original core business is in software, they have been branching out into the hardware design and distribution side of the market. As they should.

For those of you that think all is wonderful with these new versions, listen to your fellow Mac users:

Very nice move Apple. If this even chips away at just a small fraction of market-share that Microsoft Office dominates, it's well worth the write off. Not to mention the unusually positive PR to a move like this coupled with their newly released machines.

Don't get too ahead of yourself. Have you actually used the new iWork yet?

I think you mean "buy new Apple hardware, get free iLife and iWork" offer.

I personally have never gone in and heard, "Well we could've fixed this 48 hours ago, but your warranty expired."

I have. I wanted to get my iPhone 5 fixed on Sept 21. I purchased the phone on launch day a year prior, which was Sept 21. They wouldn't fix it because it was out of warranty by less than a day. The best part is I was going to schedule the appt for the 20th, but they blacked out that day because of the 5S launch.

So I said "thanks," made an appt at a different Apple store, and had it fixed that same day. I'm just glad there are multiple stores in my area....

Yeah! And what about us G4 iBook users?

The G4 while a nice machine, can't run the MAS, why can't my paid for Mac box set be converted to the store with 10.6.8, as if I got it from MAS? Why do I have to have a free update I can't run to get my paid software into the store like everyone else that can run OSXM? Seems lame.. Cmon Hackerwayne!

Probably because the new iWork uses new APIs that are in Mavericks that aren't available in 10.6.8, 10.7 or 10.8.

First of all: To get all the updates, you must be running OS X Mavericks

Get the Aperture trial from the source: Apple

If after installing you can't see the updates, the trick that worked for me is to change the system language to english -> Reboot -> Check for updates again -> Change the language to your preferred one -> Reboot.

BTW, I love this new  philosophy.

Thanks! I've DLed and uploaded to my Google Drive via my Windows work comp; I'll have to try this when I return to my beloved MacBook Pro this evening.

I mustache you a question, my friend. :) May I reward you with a TU?

N.B., TU. Cheers

Help me please !

I have a legit copy of aperture 3.4.5 installed on my MacBook Pro, and I can't have a free upgrade at version 3.5

Why ?

I did buy it at an Apple store, I still have the original DVD !

All the functionality and features that got removed! There isn't even rich text format support any more! These aren't the original iWork products. They're ports of the iOS software with less functionality than what Mac OS X iWork users are already used to.

well if this one has fewer features than previous versions then I am worried. Pages doesn't even let you compare documents. I have to convert to word and compare them there.

Not exactly.... which one is it, free for new macs or free for everyone who owns any legacy version of the software, on a new mac or otherwise? It has to be one or the other...

I have a legitimate copy of iLife 09' and am not getting the update.

"We like to believe that our users are honest, even if that belief is in vain."

And Microsoft's business model is based on the opposite. One of the thousand reasons I love Apple's products and philosophy.

And one of the thousand reasons why Microsoft will always be like the dickish older brother in Weird Science.

Nevermind that Office and Windows are pirated to such a large extent, I almost feel ripped off for being one a the few who actually paid money for them.
