I don't think this free for everyone thing is right, Apples website still says

"* Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are free on the Mac App Store for qualifying Mac computers purchased on or after October 1, 2013. OS X Mavericks required. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID.
** GarageBand is free on the Mac App Store for all compatible Mac computers with OS X Mavericks. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available with an in-app purchase. Downloading apps requires an Apple ID."

So it seems like it is just for new computers, which is what they said in the keynote 2 days ago.... Except for Garage Band strangely enough.

My iPhoto stopped working after the upgrade to mavericks and the App Store made me pay another 10£ to buy it again.
I felt ripped off.
And the free GarageBand now requires that you buy media if you want to use all of its sounds.

It's £2.99/$4.99 In-App purchase in GB for 9GB of content including all the new drummers. Can't complain at that price.

I have the most recent pre-Mavericks iWork Pages and Numbers installed. The MAS shows that I can update both Pages and Numbers for free.

Still can't update

In your article you said ANY version of Aperture. I have a DVD version 2.x bought from the apple store but it will not show to update? Apple site says version 3.x should update so I question if it is ANY version. Kind of messed up that "illegal" copies will get updated if 3.x but not legitimate purchased 2.x versions.

Is it unethical to download Aperture from Apple's homepage and update it to full version through MAS?

I think so. I think some people are going a bit far to get these freebles when they are not entilted to them. But from what I have read Apple seems to be okay with doing it.

From the way it sounds, it's like buying a game off a store shelf, and registering your key for a digital copy through Steam. As long as it's paid for, I see it as nothing more than having another convenient way to access your software.

Is it the full, paid for version of Aperture? If it is, I don't see a problem with it.

The question I have, did they pay in full for Aperature in the first place? Some people are now downloading the trial versions to get the free updates. The MAS can't tell the difference if what is installed is the trial or full version.

Mavericks installed. I have iLife '09 that came preinstalled on my MBP. I can update garage band for free (no use for this though). I really want to update iPhoto, however, and it's saying 14.99 to purchase... Seems others are encountering this problem as well.

Thoughts?
After installing Mavericks, I got the same thing but I have iLife 11 that came installed on my mid-2011 iMac. I thought I had to purchase iPhoto and iMovie to get the updates. I did. I then heard people were getting it for free.
I contacted the Mac App Store and was refused a refund.

Oh man, I can't even get myself to get this through illegal means, it's just doesn't feel right.

And I don't care that I have Office from "less ethical sources".

I have heard that some people have tried the trick where they create a new admin user, switch to that user and the updates show up as free.

EDIT: Have to have 10.9 installed first.

In order to qualify for free upgrades you need to be running Mavericks and have iWork '09, iLife '11 or Aperture 3 installed.

Earlier versions don't qualify as they have never been offered for sale via the MAS. Apple is unifying the upgrade path to MAS for apps that have been available through both channels.

And this is exactly the same way I feel.
And only Apple can do this.

Btw, by "downloading from the homepage" I meant the trial version from Apple's homepage. The URL is still online. So it would be an official source.

Same, lol. I almost went and got iWork for free, but I couldn't do it so I bought them. Aperture would be sweet, but I don't know if I'll do it. It's not right.

I have to say Apple has finally had a Keynote week with very little to complain about. That's what I love about this company, they trust their customers. They are even giving the illegitimate people free software which is amazing. Very smart move in fact. I'm not saying I'm happy about this but they realize that if someone is going to illegit then they will be illegit. Nothing Apple can do about this. They want volume and giving software away is great way to do this. It also makes them the good guy. Sorry Microsoft, Checkmate! :)

Yeah, you can get the full version of Aperture if you download the free trial from Apple.com.

If they're cheating the system by using the free demo to get the full upgrade, then no, that's not kosher in the least. I don't have any issues with people finding other ways to get software they've already paid for, but if they didn't pay for it, they obviously shouldn't take advantage of it.

Go to the MAS in Mavericks.
Click on store and then click on check for unfinished downloads.

Then it should appear in the purchased section of the MAS.

iWork 09, iLife 2011 and Aperture 3.0 are the minimum versions needed.

I've read a couple posts where people who had iLife 2009 got updated. I haven't gotten anything yet, but I'm hopeful.
