I wonder what it will take, if anything, to turn Apple Watch sales around?

It's a solution to a problem that didn't exist is really the heart of the problem.
Either sales are great and production is normal, sales are slow and production is dismal, or sales are poor and they are not making any because if you try to buy one it is dang near impossible. Still very difficult to find most of the models. I think sales are decent and certainly continue to outstrip production which is probably good from Apples view.

Though I don't plan to sell it, the resale value on my series one is terrible, this will make it worse .

They should have gone for the masses instead of selling it as a jewelry. Look to which companies they compared their sales in the keynotes (Rolex, Patek Philipe, ...). The stainless steel one could be considered a piece of jewelry. The sport one should be extremely attractive to the masses so it attracts more developers, who could come up with much broader support. More developers = more possible apps which could work as the missing "killer" app. I would stop the mess with Series 1 and Series 2, keep only the Series 2 versions around. Pricing has to be attractive: $199/$229 or $229/$249 for 38/42mm. Drop the price of the Sport bands from $49 to $29.
Your prices just don't match the technology. Configure a similar device from competitors (that will usually lack something major) and the prices are close to apples, maybe a $50 apple tax. The current line up is pretty good price wise. I looked into the competitors because my wife has a garmin and I figured thats what I would get her, but the Apple watch is just better and price competitive.

Great product (sport 42mm) use daily especially for apple pay and opening rMBP without password etc etc etc
However be prepared that if you like the watch as I do the chances of jumping ship to android are slim. (swear word on MR)
Oh did I mention the health benefits!

If your new
I feel like Apple always overprices their refurbished products. If all you are saving is $40-80 just buy new or if needed save a little longer so you can buy new. These should be selling for another $30 cheaper at entry pricing.
Full price Apple device fails in the first 14 days, you will most likely get a new one. After the 14 days, almost certain to get a refurbished device. Might as well get the refurbished if available.

There seems to be something very unhygienic about wearing a previously owned watch from a stranger on your wrist. Yeah, they can be sterilized, but it's kinda nasty. Eeeew

Here's a question: if Apple had released sales figures, and it had been in the range of what you consider successful, but was the same product we have today - would you still think the Watch was a bad idea in its current form?

I remember wanting a Mac when I was at school and part of the appeal was the niche. Everyone had an iPod but hardly anyone had a Mac. Now everyone seems to have one and we think Apple can't be Apple without a mainstream product.

I paid $170+tax for my 38mm series 0 from Best Buy last month. That's about as much as I could ever imagine spending on one these.

The biggest laugh was when Best Buy was discounting the stainless steel band models from $1000 to $250. Talk about a steep depreciation curve in just a year on market.

What's ewww about a wrist? I mean, unless you're The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, you touch door knobs and handles ever day. Knobs and handles touched by other hands... that have touched who knows what. Think about clothes and shoes you try on in stores. Others have tried those on as well. Hope you never eat out cuz...

/now i see it reads post

I've been following 2nd hand prices on Apple Watch. Before and After the Series 2 announcement/release.
Not much to be saved getting one on EBay, or the like.
These refurb prices are in line with the 2nd hand market valuations.
If AW was a flop the 2nd hand price would tank.
I've been tempted but I don't know I if I want a series 1, series 2 doesn't seem much better/different.
Less of a risk on a 2nd hand watch but not at these prices.
I suspect, therefore from this analysis, that there's a potential for greater sales long term once the skeptics (myself included) have been won over.

I guess your not in the market for a referb iPhone as it resting against your mouth!

Referbs some say are better as they pass more stringent quality control - we have a iPhone 6 referb as an 'office phone' I swear its like new.
They test test test and put on new shell etc
Guess you dont use salad bars in Pizza Hut!!

1) there's no indication they sell poorly

2) not everything has to be some grand solution to a problem. Sometimes people just use things because they're fun

Normally I'm all for refurb Apple products, they're perfect usually. But this thing has an AMOLED screen, which suffer serious degradation over time. I wouldn't do it, I'd prefer my AMOLED perfect and new.

My Apple Watch has been on my wrist for a year and a half, for at least 12 hours each day. Can't think of a reason to upgrade. It works fine.

Same with my iPhone 6+ and iPad Air 2. Use all three devices a lot and have zero issues.

Exact same thought went through my head. It's practically nigh impossible to get a Series 2 from any local brick and mortar retailer (Apple Store included), and here they are stockpiled in all their refurbished glory!
Something smelly going on here. I think this is a mind fart from our bean counter by trying to 'wow' next quarter earnings o_O

Aren't refurbished Apple products sold with the same warranty as a new product?

AMOLED degradation isn't a warranty issue, it's normal wear and tear. Now, after a year, you'd expect the warranty replacement should (hopefully) have a similar level of wear to yours. But buying new? You have no idea how many hours are on that screen.

I'm wondering out loud here - is Apple fearful of Android Wear 2.0 watches coming in a few weeks? Just as Apple leapfrogged over MS in the iDevice space - might Google be about to leapfrog over Apple with iot devices (including watches)?
Better question is: who's isn't leapfrogging Apple these days. Or name one product Apple excels at compared to the competition, hard-, software, services.

I bought an original from B&H when they had it on sale for $159 and still think I paid to much for what it does. Until recently I've been happy with every Apple product owned since 2000.

To me the aw or most likely any watch just doesn't or can't do enough. The only benefit I receive are updates tapping me on the wrist when driving.
