I wonder what it will take, if anything, to turn Apple Watch sales around?

It's a solution to a problem that didn't exist is really the heart of the problem.
What on earth are you talking about? It was an overnight billion-dollar business. I've worn mine every single day since launch and see them all over the place.

I feel like Apple always overprices their refurbished products. If all you are saving is $40-80 just buy new or if needed save a little longer so you can buy new. These should be selling for another $30 cheaper at entry pricing.
So, why don't you PayPal me $80 -- no big deal, right?

Nuts. 60 bucks off is a great discount. They're not overpriced, and the proof is that people will buy them up. I know I just got another as a gift due to this great price and free overnight shipping.

Everybody wants stuff for free. Easy to say what the price should be when it's not your product and profit.

He's probably referencing the reportedly monstrous YoY sales decline.
Hmm yeah since there is no sales data on the AW from Apple, I call BS on that claim. What you're referring to is the *claim* from IDC (cough hacks cough). Regardless, this is the proper thought on AW sales shifting to pre-holiday quarters:

I'm actually not too thrilled with my Apple Watch purchase and frankly I enjoyed my Moto 360 with Android Wear better. But what sucks is that Android Wear is complete garbage on iOS. So basically I have to force myself to like my Series 1 because it's been rock solid reliable but not a joy to use if that makes sense. Just too many features that I don't use and the most annoying issue is that when I raise my arm it rarely wakes up. I did not have that issue with my 360.

Still *WAY* overpriced.

I see that Apple is playing lots of games this holiday season with deeply discounted prior-gen models, free prior-gen models from other companies, etc.

Stop screwing around already. Stainless steel watches are a dime a dozen, yet Apple treats them like you're buying 24k gold.

But even that wouldn't get me excited, since the design is still awful. Rectangular face. Thick black border around the screen.

This was enough incentive to pull the trigger and upgrade to Series 2 from my current Series 0. Being able to transfer over the link bracelet is icing on the cake. Now, I have one for normal use and one for higher-risk activities- action pistol, motorcycling, etc. and since both can talk to my phone, fully interchangeable.

I used to do the same with my Omega Seamasters- quartz for high impact activities, mechanical for everything else.

Also handy to have two when traveling more than 22-24 hours. Leave one off, switch over when the first one's battery is depleted. I take long trips 6-8 times a year and this will solve my only problem with the watch.

I couldn't agree more. My 1st gen Moto 360 (which I got brand new over a year ago for about $150) is a much more attractive watch (the "flat tire" is a big negative, but the Apple watch has four flat tires, so...), but Android Wear is severely hobbled when paired with an iPhone, so mine collects dust in my drawer. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch is ugly and way overpriced. My brother let me use the one he bought but doesn't use and I wear it on occasion, but get no special joy or use out of it.kk

Three things will fix it:
1) Completely rethink the design. It needs to be round, with edge-to-edge screen.
2) Stainless steel, waterproof, and priced at $250.
3) Allow developers to make their own watch faces.

This is really really nice that they are doing this right now, take a look at the shipping. A great way to get the watch before Christmas. Order today, delivers tomorrow, free.

This positive language is no longer allowed here.

I snagged one. I gave mine to my wife as her company does a step count thing for cheaper insurance. I just failed to a replacement. I was waiting for series 2 on sale.

$229 for a 38mm Series 1 refurb?

I bought a *brand new* 38mm Series 1 watch last night at Target for $199.

$229 isn't too bad.

If you're looking for a Series 1, you're absolutely right.

I was talking more about Series 2. Apple has them in stock, delivered tomorrow. Extremely hard to find resellers that have Series 2 in stock.

Either sales are great and production is normal, sales are slow and production is dismal, or sales are poor and they are not making any because if you try to buy one it is dang near impossible. Still very difficult to find most of the models. I think sales are decent and certainly continue to outstrip production which is probably good from Apples view.
I've been in several pools and hot tubs with my series 0 and never had any problems

he needs a garmin not an apple watch. it has swimming down solid. it has stroke detection etc.

Early in November, there were posts about Target and Kohl's selling Apple Watch S2 with $100 gift cards. Then that didn't happen. They just did Watch S0/S1.

Now this. It seems that someone at Apple wants to goose watch sales by lowering prices, and someone doesn't. I think this does indicate there will be interesting sales incentives after the holidays.

Refurbished wearables .... gross. I don't care how many times it was scrubbed and sanitized, doesn't change that these have been in the bathroom and witnessed horrors ;)

I know it's a claim. That's why I typed reportedly.
But here's the funny thing about your quote. You're pretty quick to pull the trigger on the "IDC has no sales data" fact while completely ignoring that neither the Daring Fireball article nor Tim Cook's quote contain nary an ounce of sales data. Even though it doesn't contain one verifiable fact you think it the proper thought on AW sales. So that I'm clear: IDC - no sales data - hacks. Daring Fireball - no sales data and quoting IDC report out of context - proper. Makes sense.

Most of all, your criticism (cough hacks cough) of the IDC report ignores the most important and glaring fact. What fact? It wasn't a report about the AW. Yup, that's right... wasn't even about the AW. It was a quarterly report about, you guessed it, the wearables category. There was a second sub report that was YoY smartwatch specific. Still not about the AW. YoY is a snapshot of time that isn't tied to the AW's release schedule. So to complain that a YoY sales estimate doesn't factor in things that happened outside of the time frame, that sort of defies logic.

They are totally overpriced. They sell because thats the price point. They get returned because people are smart and the bang for buck is not there. Why else does Apple not show return rates.

I don't disagree with you, but do you think refurb iphones haven't been in the bathroom and witnessed horrors?
