Ugh, the "forward" and "reverse" buttons on the lock screen still skip entire episodes. Total deal breaker for me.

It's important to me because there isn't adequate spacing between the play/pause and the skip buttons on the lock screen... sometimes I want to hit pause, and instead I get bumped to a new episode (even worse, with audiobooks I get sent to a new chapter, with no easy way to revert back to my original location).

It's just about the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I'll be sticking with Instacast, it seems.

Absolutely the most frustrating thing about the lock screen controls. Isn't really an issue with music at all, just podcasts that are longer than ten minutes. There is no way to figure out where you were in the program quickly.

Stupid fat fingers

Hmm, could be useful for some, but mostly it seems like a large step back from just using "Music" and "iTunes" on iOS.

It adds a jump forward button-that's nice. But it drops a play speed button.

It syncs worse with (real) iTunes than Music does.

It lets you subscribe to podcasts...but it doesn't sync those feeds with (real) iTunes, and displays ALL podcasts in the feed, versus what iTunes does.

It has most of iOS iTunes functionality, but lacks that program's download manager, so it's even worse there.

Basically this could be useful IF you're only using podcasts on one single device and not multiple + PCs and IF you don't mind that you have to scroll through an entire list of deleted podcasts every time...but mostly this is worse than what's already built in to iOS, and a pretty big disappointment.

This is absolutely great! I've already subscribed to numerous podcasts.

Big question though.. how can i sync the podcasts on the iOS app with podcasts on iTunes on my Mac? Sames goes for iTunes U.

Does this new app conflict with podcasts in Music?

The functionality that's already in iOS is better than this.

You're best bet is to forget this program, and manage your podcasts through iTunes on your PC. If you want to download new episodes on your iPod, you can still do that on an individual basis through the iOS "iTunes" program.

The timing of this release even makes sense. they will likely remove said support from the Music and Video apps with iOS 6 so they would want to have this app already being used by those that need it so they won't suddenly lose something when they update. they are already set for it.

If they do that, I'll stop using iOS. The ONLY advantage iOS has for me versus Windows Phone and Android is its great podcast handling. I love it...but this is a giant step backwards, and similar to how Microsoft handles theirs with the Zune software.

Yikes...if there's really a chance they're trashing podcast support, I'm going to hold off on buying an iPhone until iOS 6 launches to make sure that's not the case... :-/

Anyone know how to resolve or why this wont work for me, it says "could not connect to itunes store, please try again later"

I don't like that it shows EVERY episode, even ones that have been released and I've listened to already, because it means after I catch up, it autoplays an episode I've already heard, AND defaults back to 1x instead of 2x. Since my podcasts already sync from the Music app with known behavior, I think I'll use this to download new episodes only for now.

Yep. Apple got this right in iTunes in 2005, and has easily lead the industry in podcast support and syncing. This is a GIGANTIC step back, to pre-2005 (i.e. Zune) levels.

The app can't play podcasts downloaded from Audible. It has a download icon next to those even though they are already on my phone. I tap on the download icon and it takes me to a download page at Audible that gives an error.

I'm hoping that this is just an unmarked (feature incomplete) beta. They need to get some testing in before the full version is released when iOS 6 is released. Since it will be replacing podcast support in the Music app. :)

Delete back episodes?

I'm glad that someone is having the same problem as me! I subscribe to several podcasts that list hundreds of episodes on their RSS podcast feed (like "Stuff You Should Know"). I've already listened to these episodes, but there doesn't seem to be a way to hide/delete these un-downloaded, un-listened-to episodes if I want the app to Subscribe and Auto-Download new episodes.

Has anyone found a work-around?

I reaaaaaaaaaly hope you're right. I'd be uncomfortable with this if it were marked as a beta, but releasing it as a supposedly finished product scares me.

I was seriously thinking of buying an iPhone on Friday for Virgin, and now after this I'm waiting until after iOS 6 to make sure it's still useable for me.

1. You can configure it.

Uggh ok now I see it... on a podcast-by-podcast basis and the default is newest-first... the opposite of what it is in the Music App.

2. Yes there is.

Apparently it only shows up for the most recent podcast in the list. If there is an older episode that is partially played, there is no indication displayed that it is partially played.

I don't know how to put this politely but everything above is wrong. I suggest you take another look because I certainly have all the functionality you said wasn't there. Way too much misinformation in this thread from people who haven't spent enough time exploring the app.

It's a new app with a different interface. You didn't learn iTunes in 5 minutes. Take some time to explore the app and you'll probably find features and functionality you thought were missing.

My goodness, no wonder Apple hasn't changed the UI in iOS all that much. People completely freak out when things don't look and work exactly how it used to. Regardless if it works better or not. And even if the same functionality or more is still there.

If you don't want to learn by exploring it at least take a look at the nice instructions Apple provided for the new Podcasts app here:

Such as? The only thing I got wrong was I (like others) missed that it has a speed up/down feature, since it's hidden...but everything else there is right, and that was by FAR the smallest issue I had with it.

You didn't learn iTunes in 5 minutes.

Pretty much. But regardless, this is just plain making syncing worse and taking away features while adding nothing of value.

If you don't want to learn by exploring

I did.

I could say the same about you claiming the complaints aren't valid.

I already deleted it. I don't know what it is, the UI just doesn't gel with me. Maybe it's because I'm so used to Downcast now.

After setting Subscription and Auto-Download to on, you will see Episodes to Keep, choose your preferred option there.

This App is so horrible...

-Slow interface. Why am I clicking on things and nothing happens for several seconds?
-Speed controls are hidden under an unnecessary button click.
-No half moons for partially listened to podcasts, or time remaining on those podcasts on the episode screen.
-For custom stuff I bring in as Podcasts, no sort by ABC order. Everything is just out of order when the Music app handles it just fine.
-The "Unplayed Episodes" are cool, but would prefer it to just play all audio stuff since that's the only time I'm not looking at my screen.

On the plus side, I can see this as a way to bring Podcast Subscriptions to iOS without needing to sync it to a computer, so that's kind of a big plus right there. I also dig the Info button too since I put rundowns of longer 6 hour podcast type stuff in the info.

After setting Subscription and Auto-Download to on, you will see Episodes to Keep, choose your preferred option there.

That setting appears to only affect downloaded podcasts. I chose to keep "All Unplayed Episodes" and the played episodes are still shown in the list.

This is exactly what is happening to me. I'm glad it's not just my phone :)

Meh. This adds some functionality I've wanted. Just doesn't seem to be with the keep it simple moniker. Also, why wouldn't they have notifications for new podcasts that are d/led?
