are people forgetting you can use almost ANY Qi Charging pad for most wireless charging Apple Products? (Maybe not the watch, that one is the outlier)

I decided to buy a few 'cheap' Qi pads and am pleased with the ability to drop in several places to charge when I feel the need. NOT just an overpriced Apple Pad.
Snap, I've had a 5 dollar charger for 2 years, works brilliantly, just parked on my work desk, minding it's own business...

I’m exchanging the wireless charging AirPods I bought this week for the standard ones. I bought it so I could charge it and my watch on the AirPower pad that was soon to be introduced.

Wow, that's quite a big deal and a very public failure. Still, good of them to pull the plug if it just wasn't working out.

I'm personally very happy with my Nomad base station (with Apple Watch charger). In a way, I found it more interesting than the AirPower since it allows the watch to be in nightstand mode.
I’m a huge Nomad fan and will look to get one of those.

That was a shocker!! - the first I’ve had in a long time, that doesn’t concern anything personal.

The only positive thing about the whole AirPower debacle is that Apple had a vision of something different and potential great and went for it. To bad it didn’t work out.

I doubt it but I now wonder if engineering wasn’t a problem, they have finished products that work, just making a buck from charging an insane amount to recouping all lost time
And money to get it up and running and low yields, just wasn’t a viable business plan?

You know some apple employees might have one laying around still ;)

That already exists. And it sucks when you have to position your device in the right place for it to work, and then it vibrates because of a phone call and moves just enough to no longer charge.

Airpower would have solved all that, if not for those meddling physics.

This is exactly it. I think a few Apple engineers were over confident in their ability to bring "beam forming" to wireless charging and let you place a device (or devices) anywhere you want. They couldn't work out whatever issues they were having to make a satisfactory product.

The only real mistake Apple made was announcing something before they were 100% sure it could be produced.

Apple today canceled AirPower, the charging mat that it first announced in 2017, because of an inability to meet its high standards for hardware, reports TechCrunch.

AirPower was designed to charge the Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods all at once, but after Apple announced the device in 2017, there were persistent rumors of difficulties and no product ever launched. Apple says work on the product has been canceled entirely because the company has been unable to achieve what it was aiming for with the AirPower.

"After much effort, we've concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward," said Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in a statement provided to TechCrunch.

AirPower was introduced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone X, and at the time, Apple said it would launch in 2018. 2018 came and went with no sign of AirPower and no word from Apple on when it would materialize.

There were, however, continual rumors of production, engineering, and manufacturing difficulties. Rumors suggested that there were problems with heat management, inter-device communication, and interference because Apple wanted to design a charging device where you could put an iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods anywhere on the mat to charge.

This required layering multiple charging coils, resulting in a device that ran too hot, which turned out to be an engineering issue Apple couldn't solve.

AirPower was supposed to work with the Wireless Charging Case for the AirPods that was released last week, and it was also meant to charge Apple Watch Series 3 and 4 models and all iPhones that support Qi-based wireless charging. With Apple having released the AirPods Charging Case just recently, there was speculation that an AirPower launch was imminent.

The cancelation of AirPower comes as a shock as there have been continual signs that the product was still in the works. AirPower mentions were still included on the newly launched AirPods Charging Case, and Apple recently secured a trademark for the AirPower name. There have also been ongoing rumors of a spring launch, so it appears that Apple worked for months on AirPower solutions before ultimately deciding to nix the project.

Ending work on a project that was already announced and shown off is unprecedented in Apple's recent history.

I think there is a big reason why apple quit, I'm pretty sure they knew what they wanted
is not that they couldn't accomplish their goal
is that they didn't want to
why?
here is why
it seems like apple doesn't want to spent any money on hardware innovation
and now they just want to milk the cow with the services
so is like apple quit innovation in favor of making money in services

since they can make money in services now they don't care about hardware development
yeah it sound like the Mac Pro
