In the US, maybe. Here in Europe we were already up to our necks in 3G infrastructure and the iPhone hasn't done squat to improve any of that. Instead, the carriers tried to use the iPhone as leverage to jack up the plan prices, perhaps thinking they could borrow some of that "higher prices for no valid reason" magic from Apple. Getting an iPhone here sets you back way more than any other phone does. You can buy it unlocked for a zillion or go with one of the extra expensive plans; here in Sweden they market them as "iSurf", "iMini", "iMidi" and "iMaxi".
The Telia iSurf is not really that expensive. 149 SEK per month, isn't it? That is equivalent to 20 USD.
I do vote with my wallet by purchasing Apple products, so Apple wins. That doesn't however stop me from sensing the rotten stench of corner cutting and predatory greed that oozes out from under the keyboard, it's a stench that shouldn't be in the room when I buy premium products.
So you still buy Apple products despite this stench? That reminds me of something that happened during an epic bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden in 1973.

This was my thinking too so this news has taken me by surprise. I can't believe the monitor evolution will stop at 27" and the 30" was just a Moon shot landing never to be tried again.

I hope you are right. I love my 30" display and have been waiting for a larger version for years. I look forward sometime in the future. We'll see.

Lame, lame, lame.......
Apple officially leaves the Pro ring.
Who the hell will edit videos etc on a glossy screen?
Anyone notice that the Mac Pro upgrade is not even featured in the 2 top levels of the Apple web site and that you have to dig deep to find any mention of them or the new monitor.
Lame, lame, lame..........:(

Is it not likely that the 27" becomes the small display in the lineup- and a new 32" version comes out at some point in the near future?
Nah. They've given up on displays. It's been over 6 years since they designed a display, from the ground up, without any iMac dependencies. The only reason they offer this single 27" model is that they're already having those panels made for the iMac, as evidenced by the fact that they're dropping the 24" display now that the iMac 24" is no longer around.

Those iMac panels can't really be professional grade, or else they wouldn't slap them on their consumer models. The display on my iMac 24" (Dec '07) is stripey, unevenly lit and yellowish, it's the old TFT panel though but still, not a pro display.

Better get used to those Dell/HP/NEC/LG/Eizo logos in your field of vision unless you have any Apple stickers lying around...

I haven't looked at those plans in detail for a couple of years now, but when they were introduced (with the launch of the 3G in Sweden, summer '08) they were crazy expensive compared to Telia's normal plans. I kept my old plan and bought the 3G unlocked.

I commenced the switch to Mac a year ago after many years (≈17) on PC. I use a laptop and a workstation for my work, that's my rig of choice. So I started with replacing the laptop with a MBP 17" and the plan was to replace the desktop with a Mac Pro the next time they were updated. In the meantime the household iMac was used as a desktop substitute, I figured it'd do for a few months. Little did I know that it would take over 16 months for that to happen and that the update would be a very modest speed bump to a Nehalem processor that's just as old as the previous one. Meanwhile I had gotten tangled up in costly investments like buying CS5 Master Collection for Mac, an Apogee audio interface that has no Windows driver, Office for Mac and so on, and I recently ordered Logic. Going back to PC at this point would be a helluvalot more expensive than completing the transition by getting a Mac Pro.

So I wouldn't call it Stockholm Syndrome, it's more like getting on a bus in good faith only to discover that the bus driver (Steve) is completely bonkers and speeding toward some unknown destination, could be Narnia, Mars or a brick wall, but I'm stuck on the bus since jumping off at full speed would result in serious injury.

It's a lot easier to like Apple stuff these days when you just admit to yourself that Apple gear isn't premium. It's just what you like.

If it was only 1920 x 1200. I just bought a new video card too.

Looks appealing until you realize it's a color shifting panel with a not so wide viewing angle that makes the display look like a negative from certain angles.
It's a TN panel display (Twisted Nematic) which is pretty crappy stuff. The reason for the low price. Cannot be compared to IPS panels like the Apple 27 inch ACD.

You're better off with an H-IPS panel from Dell. (U2411)

It's not so easy to vote with your wallet when you have invested time and money on software. (Buying it, then all the time it takes to master it)
Agreed, I don't have to buy Apple monitors, but jumping ship is not as straight foreword as some people make it out to be

I had a feeling it was a TN panel. I don't have a DisplayPort output either on this GTX 460.

I suppose if you are some fancy graphic designer that needs to pay extremely close attention to colors, pixel counts and that kind of stuff than fine.
It's not just about those things but the fact that you can't even position those glossy screens anywhere you want in a room. You have to keep it away from windows and lights. It's fine for a murky bachelor pad with the blinds down but it's awful in an office. Color accuracy is the least of your concerns when the bright, white office with flourescent lights and and giant windows turn a glossy display into a ****** bathroom mirror where all you see is your own mugshot.

Excellent point. Its still "iPhone is here" - since about a month now. Nothing on the front page about MacPro or screen...

Would a hood not work?

Welcome to the new Apple.:(
Long gone are the days the Mac was the big thing and they took care of the Pro folks.
Now is all about the toys. iPod, iPad and iPhone. Nothing wrong with that, I love those products but I make my living with the Pro stuff. I just would like Apple to pay attention to us as well.

I've been trying to wrap my head around why so many of you see this as the sky falling.

I have a designer friend that suggested that most people she works with use Lacie Displays http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10016 for color accuracy anyway.

Also I see Dell offers a very similar display to Apple's 27" for about the same cost http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=224-8284. This Dell display appears to be suited for color accuracy.

If Apple cannot make money selling displays then I understand why they would discontinue selling them.

I really don't think paring down display offerings means the Mac is dead or not a serious platform for serious work.

I suppose I am either too laid back or too naive.

So why do people want Apple displays then? Because they live in murky bachelor pads? Don't get me wrong, I really don't like glossy screens either. That is why I will never buy one - even if it has a picture of a fruit on it and receives power, video and audio via one cable. If Apple doesn't want to sell me this kind of display, then fine - I will get it from somewhere else instead. Ever considered a Samsung?

why would they do this?

Because it's not a phone.

Sad to say, but Apple is slowly getting out of the traditional computer business. It started with dropping the "Computer" part of "Apple Computer" and now traditional computer options, no consumer desktops (true desktops that is like the old PowerMacs). Instead, they are now offering Apple brand battery chargers for goodness sake! If that doesn't clue people in, nothing will. OSX will be iOS only in a few years and it's a darn shame because real computers aren't going anywhere any time soon despite what Steve seems to think about iPads taking over the world.

Actually I see this forum as becoming more like a bunch of people who are becoming indicative of the shallow Apple market that only came on board when the iPod became popular.

People who really have no clue about the origins of Apple, never used Apple in a professional capacity and have no idea how far out of touch Apple is going with regards to professional users. The users who kept Apple afloat before it became shiny and popular with the kids and soccer moms.

Dude, you are clearly speaking with the wrong guy: I started to work with Macs in 1989 and I'm administrating a network with 13 Mac Pros

In the mean time I like iDevices very much, so whats the problem ? Your whining about Apple going away from the "Pro Market" is just a non sense, the day after the release of new, exciting Mac pros ....
They are just leaving the high end LCD market, in a way (because we still have a 27" ACD in the Apple Store)

I guess this puts the rumors of a 24" iMac coming back to rest.

No more 24" panels = No chance the 24" iMac is making a return.

21.5 and 27 will probably be the only sizes for a few years, until 27 and 31 or 33 or some number around there become standards (if people still demand larger and larger displays a few years from now).

And for all the people who freak out about Apple's prices, they are IPS panels and are quite competitive versus similar IPS panels on the market. In fact, Dell's 27" LED backlit IPS monitor is $100 more than Apple's and contains NO webcam, NO speakers, and NO laptop docking capability.

So in a way, Apple is the budget-concious choice for professionals (who require an IPS display).

In fact, Apple gives you a bit more value versus other competitors' displays because if you own a Macbook or Macbook Pro, these displays make it easier than ever to dock due to the ability to charge your laptop AND power the display in one cable.

I have also not seen many PC displays that contain a pretty GOOD sound system, a decent webcam, and a USB hub in the display itself.

The PC displays I saw on Newegg that had speakers built in had something like 2w or 4w speakers (basically useless for anything other than window alert sounds), versus the 49 watt 2.1 system that the Apple display has, and hardly any of them had a built in webcam and mic (the ones that had a webcam did not have a built in mic, or at least one wasn't listed in the specs).

In conclusion, the Apple 27" Cinema Display is a phenomenal value for those who want good stuff. If you are a consumer user and don't care about specs, then I would agree Apple has nothing for you, but you can't dismiss the value of this offering.

Apple SHOULD, IMO, offer a 21.5" or similar display on the cheap for those who want to buy Mac Minis and have an Apple Display too. Perhaps a $399 or so 21.5" display with speakers, webcam, mic, and USB hub (doesn't have to be IPS, could be PVA or even a high quality TN like the old aluminum iMacs) would sell pretty well.

Dunno, I have a Dell 30" myself with the same LG panel as the one in the ACD 30" so I'm not complaining. Why people want Apple displays? Aesthetics and brand loyalty. If you build your workspace around the distinct and uniform Apple look, with all that sleek and minimalist aluminum stuff, most 3rd party displays stick out like a sore thumb. My Dell screen blends in fairly well, it's black/silver with a metal stand that has roughly the same matte silver finish as Apple's products. But it was discontinued in 2008 and replaced with a giant turd.

This one kinda has an Apple 'foot' but the glossy black plastic stuff is tacky:

Elliptical and transparent stands aren't exactly eye pleasers either:

Are you kidding me:

I'm guessing that's why people want Apple displays... a lot of 3rd party screens should come with a bucket to puke in.

Would a hood not work?
Have you tried a hood on your mirror?
Did it change something else or is it still mirror?
Would glossy screen with bright & shadow parts in picture illuminate your
face looking that monitor and reflecting your face back to the screen,
where it shows especially in dark areas?
Or anything else not black behind you?
How would hood change that?
