They are working on a software fix to an issue with the bar display showing 5 bars until very low in the signal band. This is not a fix to the 20 dbm loss of signal when holding the phone. Did you even read their statement ?
Did you read my comment, or are you just typing to hear your keys clack? Here, I'll quote it again. This time, wipe the drool off your chin and read carefully...

They're working on a software fix. If you don't believe the software fix will work, return the damn phone and wait until either the software fix is proven to work, or they embarrassingly implement a recall and replace the phone with hardware that works. Then you can pick up the iPhone 4.1, with no uncomfortable twisted panties.
So, recapping, here are your choices.
1. Return the phone for a full refund, knowing full well the fix won't work (because after all, your knowledge on antenna design and RF signals is infallible).
2. Wait to see if somehow Apple might just understand the problem better than you, and the fix just might make a difference. When the fix is issued, make a decision for yourself as to whether the fix worked or not, and either keep the phone or return it for a full refund.
After performing either of these actions, eventually, if there is a hardware problem that can not be fixed by software, Apple will either maintain that there is no issue, and you can happily use the funds received when returning your phone to buy a new, different phone that does what you want, or Apple may say there is a hardware issue, and start shipping a phone with a hardware fix, in which case you can use the funds received when returning your phone to buy a new iPhone 4.1.
All your choice. And all options let Apple know that you aren't happy much better than ranting like a six year old on a forum.
