Intriguing...

I think this makes sense. At the same time I think a media center by apple along with a media store, ready to go now would be the NEXT LARGE THING for Apple.

Yet, THE CAN'T FORGET THEIR POWER LINE OF COMPUTERS! Mr. Jobs release those Powerbooks!

Intriguing as this may be, Apple is def. going to release yet another iPod update..

But I don't think they would host another media event if it was just another iPod update.. PowerBooks, iMacs, and PowerMacs should all be receiving some sort of update as well..

I think the PowerBooks will not be HD until the intel models come out.. They do need an update though.. This update should include a SuperDrive for all models and more. As for the iMacs, they deserve a little boost as well.. including SuperDrives for every model. And for the PowerMacs, i don't know what they'll do with those..

For the iPod... Little Stevie has always been hesitant about the Video iPod... Is it time yet? That's what we'll see..

In my opinion, it will be a video iPod. Why? Because Jobs hasn't said much on the subject of Video iPods in recent times... Plus, competition is getting tougher on the higher end.. If Apple releases a video iPod, I don't think any of these people who complain about how Apple has lagged behind on the PVP iPod.

Meh...

It's not like we need another iPod. Is that all Apple is making these days??

And for the movie store... It has something to do with iPod doesn't it - it's entertainment.

What about for the creative people out there that use Mac's for work...

Not impressed Apple, if it is an entertainment related product release......

I agree. I've already voiced my opinions on what music issues they need to fix before even considering video, but that's beside the point. Apple doesn't care about music. What's so cool about having lo-res video in your pocket?

  • You can't watch it while walking/riding/driving.
  • It's hardly worth watching at all on a tiny screen.
  • Plugging it into a TV somewhere else isn't going to give you near the video or surround sound quality of a DVD.
  • Very few people carry DVDs around with them wherever they go. Thus very few people are saying to themselves right now "Gosh, I wish I could take my whole collection of DVDs with me at once!" Contrast that to the situation with music, where most people were taking a few CDs in the car, making the iPod an obvious extension of that behavior.

Can video be anything but a gimmick? Even if it's just for video podcasts, you still have to sit down somewhere to watch it. You can't watch while driving like you might listen to an audio podcast.

This is a serious question for all of you who are frothing at the mouth for a video iPod: how do you really expect to use it? Do you expect the video to be as beneficial as the music capability, or do you expect to play with it a few times and rarely use it after that? Would you really use it every day? Every week even? Think about it and be honest.

I had an iPod photo (before it got stolen :() and I loaded a few hundred photos on it, but I really never used that feature. Not once did I have a situation where I wanted to pull it out and start showing pictures to people. Glad I didn't buy the AV cable, as the photo capability was clearly just a gimmick to me. Isn't video more of the same?

I want to know why it's going to be the next great thing. Besides the fact that it's from Apple and Steve Jobs says it's great. Convince me. I'm a skeptic.

I'd much rather have an improved music experience (gapless) any day. I'll pay handsomely for that. Too bad I'm in the minority, I guess!
I mostly agree with everything you say. Although, I would like a color iPod with photo-capability. I agree with you, I wouldn't use it often, but I do know I would use it to show off a few pictures from time to time. I don't need it, but it would be a nice to have. Having video-capability would be similiar, nice to have but completely unnecessary. I would probably use that even less than using the photo options.

I bought my first iPod, a 4G iPod soon after they came out. It has served me well and I have no need to replace it. Although having something nice, shiny and new is always fun. I want to upgrade when there are several benefits not just one or two, which is why I haven't purchased an iPod Photo/Color. I think the color display is nice and the photo features would be welcomed but Apple needs to offer more before I upgrade. I want more capacity as I've already exceeded the space on my 20 GB drive. However, I want my new larger capacity iPod to be the same or smaller in size as my current 4G 20 GB, so the current 60 GB iPod is out. I would also like a new form-factor for the big iPods. The white acrylic and chrome back scuff far too easily so you either get it scratched up or have to hide (protect) the elegant design, which is stupid. I really like the iPod mini style with the anodized aluminum. A new design like the mini or something all together new or would be appreciated.

New music features would also be nice. I would really like gapless as well, but it's not huge deal for me as it is for some. A user-serviceable batter wouldn't hurt either.

About time something's going to be released. The roller coaster is finally moving, and it's about halfway up the hill. Can't wait for the rush on the way down next week when the new product(s) are released.

The New Powerbooks....

Introducing the new PowerBook G4's...HD video, you can watch a movie...or make one! Available in 13",15" and 17" widescreen HD. :D

Oh, and if there is a video iPod.. It will allow you to have movies..

What I am expecting with the movie store is the first actual movie store online. You can DOWNLOAD movies legally through iTunes, which they may change the name of.. Maybe iMedia.

Scratch that.. no way will they name something iMedia.. I hate this. Apple is doing it to me again.. Now, all I will be able to do is dream about what Apple's "One more thing" will be..

Maybe it's like, Steve jobs will say one more thing to the nano.. and then say it..

And then he'll be like oh, and one more thing.. and then show another item..

And then he'll be like, okay just one more thing..

And it'll continue on in a cycle of endless things that steve jobs does..

Apple has been making me mad, I will be really pissed if they come out with another iPod....they are a freaking COMPUTER company.

I'm really thinking of pulling my predictions of Dual Dual G5 PowerMacs and displays.... The more and more I think about it, the more and more I think it is a "conclusion" of the iPod nano/ROKR event.... the whole "One more thing" yadda yadda yadda.... except when the faithful used to hear that, it meant we were about to cream in our pants by some brand new Pro machine.

Now "One more thing" means some teeny bopper will be able to bitch and whine to mommy and daddy that they just NEED to have the new iPod because all the other kids have one... I have a distinct feeling I'm going to be throwing up on Wednesday when a video iPod is unveiled.

Or...

Curtain opens and there is a large boxing ring with Steve Jobs sporting his new iPod Nano Mini while kickboxing the fooey out of a Bill Gates pinata.

"...It's just incredible. See how easily I can perform my workout without the slightest interuption? It's practically invisible on my boxers. Mere mortals can wear this thing and it won't fall off..."

Media server

Its gotta be video related, but, I think that if there is any kind of concerted effort coming in video, it may not be limited to iPods. I think the Airport Express 2 video streaming could be close or partially right, but it could also be a Media Server. No, they didn't buy Tivo, but Apple must eventually target the living room where MSFT is looking to go. HTPC and home automation are still wide open and this could be a first foray with video/ DVR capabilities as well as music and video streaming.

DVD player icon looks like an iPod, in iTunes 5 when you launch a video it's in that small box which is the size of an iPod screen. Looks like Apple has been prepping you for a video iPod for a while now, you just didn't know it. :D

I wonder when we are going to see the Powermac updates. hopefully dual-core.
I just can't take another ipod announcement.
I love the ipods, but I make my living using Apple's professional computer line up. I have never heard someone making money listening music. so I hope it's not an Ipod again.
Please SJ, it's about time for you to please the professional crowd.
Have you ever heard of someone making money SELLING music to people who will listen to it? This is what Apple cares about. They don't sell iPods or offer iTunes so people can make money listening to music. They make money selling digital music and portable digital music players ... and ... they make more money off of iPods and iTunes than they do off of the Professional (or other) Mac computers. I am a loyal Mac user and would love to see the Macs upgraded as much as anyone, but Apple is focusing on what is profitable to them. Period.

New PBs, the shipping date on 15" and 17" has changed to 1-2 days, so "new PowerBooks next week" is finally true. :)

Completely agreed, bring on the Powerbook.

I agree but...

Yes they are but IMHO - not anymore....

they will continue to focus on the younger market with items a teenager can afford - you can only move so many $3000+ machines.... but selling 10 iPods is EASY.

So I feel that they will always lead the graphics and movie market - but those true 'true power users' will be the core but the low end and iPod users will be where they make their big bucks for the near term.

IE - no need to worry about making the new G5 powerbook or 20ghz tri core tripple processor power mac (although I hear that will be released next year)!
:p

I just hope it's a Macintosh announcement and not an iPod announcement. As much as I love my iPod, it is such an attention whore. :)

I know that the Ipod is the cash cow for Apple. If you read my post you would understand that what i mentioned is that the ipod is a nice machine but is not a important for professional folks. Unless you are a teenager or student, I don't see why people are going crazy about another Ipod.
Apple is focusing too much on the ipod and forgetting about what they used to be so good at, making amazing computers and software for professionals that depend on it.

Hm, the U2 ipod seems to have done remarkably well... why else would it still be around? And Madonna has a new album coming out next month... maybe as part of her iTunes exclusive deal, they are releasing the Madonna ipod?

Cleary this will be a hover car with built in iPhone, iTablet,G6 Cube and Fission engine.

On a more realistic note don't get your hopes up that way if its something really great it will be even better.

PowerBooks - 13", 15", 17" versions. All will be widescreen HD. All will have either freescale dual-core g4 (probably most likely) or single core g5.

Be real. The Freescale dual-core G4 won't be available in quantity until mid-2006 and the low-power (single-core) G5 would require too much of an engineering redesign, not worth Apple's time given the upcoming transition. However, the Freescale 7448 would be definitely possible and given its faster specs (faster FSB, doubled L2 cache, faster memory) with its shorter pipeline (compared to the G5), it would be faster than any currently available low-power G5, so...

let's be real, at most it would be the 7448, perhaps with dual-layer Superdrive, perhaps with widescreen HD and updated GPU, perhaps with a 100GB/7200rpm hard drive, all of which would be very cool.

Assuming this is some sort of video device, either set top box or video ipod, the most interesting news will be what sort of formatting the devices will use for the video files. Apple has been pushing h.264 within the .mp4 container, but as of now there isn't any way to put a lot of the important features that DVD's provide within that container (menus, subtitles, alternate language, surround ac3, etc, etc). Most of the those things are technically possible with the .mp4 container, but no one has succeeded in getting it to work right really.
Secondly, will Itunes allow the importing of dvds to the library as it does with cds, or will it be purely for movies bought from the itunes media store?
Finally, what resolution will the videos that one buys from the itms come in? I doubt anyone would pay for a movie that was anything less that dvd resolution (somewhere around 720x480), but it's unlikely that they could fit a screen with anywhere near that resolution into a portable device the size of an ipod. So if the store sells movies at dvd or higher (hd?) resolutions, there will be an issue of dropping that resolution down for the ipod. Needless to say, with current video encoding tech, this would be no small task, even on a dual-dual powermac.

i don't get the big whoop about the "supposed" PB update. 200 mhz FSB??? what can you do with that? they need to get their stuff together. I won't even think about a PB until the mactels come out. by then they'll be up to 800mhz fsb and dual core...now THAT is a POWER book.
