It has to be the new video iPods and video store. The red curtains are probably the biggest hints here. Curtains could mean feature presentation as in motion picture or curtains that are used for movie theaters. So it should have to do something with video. The last invitation showed pockets and "1000 songs" as a hint for a new smaller iPod.

If this is a "vPod" coming out, then I might just have to change my mind about using my spare cash for a new D-SLR... I'd expect this one to be quite expensive, maybe pushing $600 or up!

I sure hope not. It will be out of my range, if it is.

I think $399 and $499 would be a good area. However, you may very well be right. I just hope not. $599 sounds so expensive.

I have been thinking of ways to build my own windows MCE box that would do this for a while. My DVD collection just passed 400 and I'm looking for a way to catalogue some, if not all, of my DVDs on a computer with a nice pretty interface for finding movies and a simple way to rip a movie into it.

.... as of yet i cannot find any software that allows me to do that easily. If apple offered something like this, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Even better, allow for streaming to other computers. That way you could access your entire DVD collection from any computer in the house.

mmmmm

I would but that in a second it would need menus and things like that really kick ass :D

If it is a brand new product, my guess is that it will be a media center version of a mac mini... with a decent sized hard drive, 512MB RAM, S-video/component/Mini DV-I out (as well as perhaps a real DVI connector), USB, Firewire, Network, GOOD sound device (probably with optical out as an option), probably combo/superdrive as well. Not sure about processor, whatever they have left over (lower end G5 or G4)

small form factor, priced somewhere just above the mac mini. From the depths of my soul, I hope it is NOT yet another ipod. You can only beat a horse to death for so long before it turns to pulp and rots away. While I would love for it to be a powerbook update, at this point, Steve Jobs can give me oral favors re: the now-low-powerBook line.

Lol. I love threads were nobody reads anything. I posted the same thing 5 times and nobody noticed on the Mighty Mouse thread.

I have read every single post to this thread1 Yihaa! First ever! What freaks does that anyway... (yeah, those with bedwetting and chronic prostate problems).

So I can basically just say anything because nobody will care. 99% stopped reading 160 posts up. Especially hidden at the end of a paragraph. So this line will be read only once and that is by the next poster - Steve will stand next to Paul, Ringo and two posters of John and George. Michael J. will be online by iSight saying "I made it happen - and world peace".

I cannot help but grin and yawn at the same time - over one hundred posts contained almost the exact same sentence "I believe it will be Video iPod and Video iTMS".

So these are my scientific findings:
I BELIEVE IT WILL BE VIDEO IPOD AND VIDEO ITMS.

Could it be something like this???

All movie themed...

A new powerbook update...
to watch movies on the go in HD

A new powermac update...
for those who make movies(ie. encode uncompressed HD video)...

A vid-pod...
ultra portable, 1000 movies in your pocket.. err, maybe 10 anyways! ;)

Alright, here's another totally off-the-wall idea.

Imagine this... a rebirth of the Newton, marketed as an iPod of sorts. Complete with an in-between version of OS X, to help point iPod fanatics back to the Macintosh platform. Of course it will have support for movies, probably a touch screen, support for music, wi fi, etc.

Is it too far-fetched?

Apple has been making me mad, I will be really pissed if they come out with another iPod....they are a freaking COMPUTER company.

And they can't do both? It's not like the same team of people are designing music players and computers...

^^ but they are focusing too much (IMO) on the ipod division. Yes, it is a huge money maker for them, but the neglect for their computers in favor of ipods is VERY annoying.

no. Apple needs to make a new newton, I'll buy one.

About the curtain, isn't this supposed to be "the year of HD"? In that case the curtain might also relate to new PBs with upgraded displays and hopefully new PMs, both for video and audio editing. You know, there also is something called High Definition audio aswell (192kHz sampling rate) :p :D

Remember before the nano the event had a picture of Steve's jean's. Well, that curtain is a theatre curtain.

How about iTunes video store, and video iPods.

This is so obvious.

my oh my

it seems no one even bothers to read, or scan previous posts.

there is no way it is a 'planned' new product release, or update. this event is totally un-foreseen.

it is something that has come together 'incidentally' for apple. one that requires third party approval outside of their control.

the timing and nature of the event, dictate this logic .

read my previous posts no251 etc......

I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat, but I'm not a CEO either. Was hoping the Mac mini would have been closer to this. Hard to beat subsidized DVRs on price though. Got my 2 DirecTiVos for $99 each with 40G hard drives and upgraded them with $80 120G drives.

B

Such devices already exist, and work quite well.

I got a Plextor PVR which uses Elgato EyeTV software for about $200. It works great, can encode in multiple formats, and uses TitanTV.com for schedule information. I like using Titantv.com much better than my old PVR, because it's much easier to navigate and search for shows. There's no subscription fee either.

My Mac has a 200GB hard drive, so is good to go for a lot of recorded shows. I can burn the shows to DVD, or there are ways of outputting to TV (additional equipment though.)

I anticipate being able to transfer this content to a iPod Video. Being that I was waiting for the new iPods updates anyway (with or without video), an iPod Video would work out pretty nicely for me.

I doubt it, that kind of update would probably be more likely in the Mactels.

The Video iPod

We have Apple negotiating over music videos. We have a PortalPlayer chip in iPods that does video. We have several other pocket video products that have helped shake out the technology. We have iPods with video out. We have better CPUs, better chips, better screens, better clickwheels, better batteries. So:

Video iPod. 80GB, Slightly thinner. Slightly narrower. Smaller clickwheel. A taller screen, 320 high 240 wide. Possibly OLED. Plays video, Hold it horizontally for video. Relatively awesome battery life. Video out via FireWire. No video in. Composite or SVideo out with a new cable.

iTunes already handles video. You can sync your pod with iTunes and it transfers videos in. The music store starts selling video. SHORT videos. Music videos, $1.29. DRM encoded like the music. Also newscasts. Also weathercasts. Also short features like those seen in Current TV. iMovie integration. iMovies load into the pod. The pod requires MPEG4. iTunes converts automatically.

iTunes already handles video podcasts. They load into the pod. They remain free. Video podcasts becomes much more popular and plentiful.

New AirPort Express. Decompresses MPEG4 sent to it by iTunes, sends it to new composite or SVideo out. $149.

Note I haven't included widescreen or HDTV abilities. Give 'em time. These are my predictions.

By the way...

A video iPod would be great if you could just plug it in a TV set whereever you are and watch your movies, though this might have been mentioned before ;)

Possibly, but not absolutely.

The Nano was announced at a special event in conjunction with the ROKR. The Nano already took the wind out of the ROKR's wings, I doubt Motorola would have wanted even more Apple hardware to debut then.

Also, it makes perfect sense to introduce the Nano by itself and give it prime media time, and then introduce a new iPod (and/or Mac updates.) Had the Nano come out at the same time as the iPod Video, either or both would have gotten short thrift in the press. Both are very newsworthy, and very important products for Apple (the Nano especially, since it replaced Apple's best-selling iPod.)

At the very same time the Nano was introduced, almost all iPod billboards were replaced with Nano billboards. They couldn't have done this with a combined rollout.

Finally, there have been rumors for at least a couple of weeks that the iPod Video would be introduced in early October.

i totally agree with you. i feel the same. its a total mess!

An iPod is going to be part of the event, without question. Most likely this is the video ipod. Some of these ideas like this event being held for Powerbooks does not make any sense. They are sending these invitations to the media, but iPod-only sites would not be getting these invitations, if it was a computer announcement. Furthermore, we're not expecting any significant Mac releases right now, only updates.

This is going to be a video iPod. Sure, they might also have some Airport express with video, but the main thing is going to be the video iPod.

I wish it was this Wednesday, so we didn't have to go through eight days of speculation. :)

i like this theory...i like it alot.

It's going to be the new scratch-resistant Nano. Steve's going to rub it against a pair of red velvet curtains to show how robust it is.
