timing

to me, it is the timing of this 'extra' event that is key.

if they actually were launching a product revision (mac, pmac, pbook...) apple would have either:
1) known it was ready(ish) and announced it at the nano launch.
2) not done a special launch at all; just a low-key announcement.

hence... it is something that has been in the works, but needed some final tweeking/agreements to fly. a product that required something that needed to be put in place, which was largely outside of apple's control and timing (not an upgrade, for they are generally in apples' control).

therefore... it is something involving third parties like -the movie industry!

it seems to point to a movie-compatible itunes store and upcoming player.
:)

Be real. The Freescale dual-core G4 won't be available in quantity until mid-2006 and the low-power (single-core) G5 would require too much of an engineering redesign, not worth Apple's time given the upcoming transition. However, the Freescale 7448 would be definitely possible and given its faster specs (faster FSB, doubled L2 cache, faster memory) with its shorter pipeline (compared to the G5), it would be faster than any currently available low-power G5, so...

let's be real, at most it would be the 7448, perhaps with dual-layer Superdrive, perhaps with widescreen HD and updated GPU, perhaps with a 100GB/7200rpm hard drive, all of which would be very cool.

I think both of you should be real...there is not gonna be ANY Mac-related announcement...just the vidPod, the iTMS for movies and, definitely maybe, a home theater/TiVO like-solution...NEVERMIND about the rest, that's what the theater curtains are for...a continuation of the Nano announcement.

Hints

It has to be the new video iPods and video store. The red curtains are probably the biggest hints here. Curtains could mean feature presentation as in motion picture or curtains that are used for movie theaters. So it should have to do something with video. The last invitation showed pockets and "1000 songs" as a hint for a new smaller iPod.

It bloody well better be the iPod Video, just in time to put a world of hurt on the products of Creative and Archos.

I'd also hope that they introduce a G5 Mac Mini so that a person could actually use it as a media machine capable of handling HD video content, thus truly capping 2005 as "the year of HD".

Most likely the iPod Video and updated PowerBooks. It's unlikely that Apple would update the Mac Mini to G5 when they haven't updated the PowerBook since late Jan 31st... that doesn't make sense to have a consumer-line product more powerful than a pro-line product. My bet is iPod Video and updated PowerBooks (7448, HD display with updated GPU, dual-layer Superdrive, and faster hard drive). ;)

hd powerbooks. 13'' 15'' 17'' it only makes sense. Since its a movie theter ever think like movie, HD screen. It kinda works right?

That and probably the iPod Video.

But... but... October the 12th is not a Tuesday. ;)

New PowerMacs or/and new iPods in time for Xmas.

Likely due to the fact that Monday (the 10th) is a federal holiday: Columbus Day. With the iTMS (where there are updates every Tuesday), when there is a Monday holiday, the updates are on Wednesday. This is probably just in keeping with the way Apple schedules stuff.

more on timing...

the timing is also signifcantly a day AFTER the release of financial.

my speculation being either:
1) the results are going to be amazing and why detract from that with another major announcement before, or at the some time?
2) very good results and now that we have the investor community's attention, deliver a follow-up punch with something extraordinary.
3) horrible results, so lets cheer everyone up (not likely, if so why wait to announce)?

either way, it is one hell of a way to kick off a new quarter. and it must be a big one, if they are commiting to 'commercializing' steve's line this way. :)

Intel Inside (not a mac)

Hasn't Steve repeatedly said no vid ipod?? -- wasn't there rumors of an apple set top/mac mini/tv/movie projector system project??
I don't know why --- but I have this crazy feeling --- maybe with intel chips --- just rambling on

...interesting thought. What if it was based on Mac OSX, but wasn't the full deal, and ran on an Intel processor that was suited for the job.

HD encode/decode web/TV device.

That would support the "early" Intel announcement.

It wouldn't be an iPod or a mac, but a new appliance. Timing prior to Christmas is ripe.

PowerMacs and PowerBooks aren't "new" products, they won't hold a one more thing event to announce revised models. My bet is that they will be announced quietly on 10/11 (Tuesday) w/ the iPod Media Event happening on 10/12 (Wednesday). It's the Itunes Movie Store and Video Pod, No Doubt about it.

This makes a lot of sense. Update the PowerBooks (and maybe PowerMacs) on Tuesday, then introduce the "new" iPod Video on Wednesday (the "one more thing").

HOME THEATHER VIDEO

No. He initially would give reasons why video players haven't been very popular.

In recent interviews he has backed off of that, basically saying 'no comment':

YOU ARE RIGHT MADMAX ---but I still think it could be a home theather device --- the red curtin does mean something -- and apple has been working on a set top projector thing -- there were rumors a year or so ago in the home theather mags -- and with the possibility of a vid itunes store -- and with the mac mini --- it all might be coming together --

A DVR-like device makes much more sense to me. Catalog and store your movies on the computer, watch them on TV just as you would using a DVR or DVD player.

But then I'm not the head of a growing and profitable multi-billion dollar company, so what do I know?
I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat, but I'm not a CEO either. Was hoping the Mac mini would have been closer to this. Hard to beat subsidized DVRs on price though. Got my 2 DirecTiVos for $99 each with 40G hard drives and upgraded them with $80 120G drives.

It's a a tablet/vidPod comparable to the PSP running on a PPC chip and an OS X style interface.

Think Portable TiVO

Cleary this will be a hover car with built in iPhone, iTablet,G6 Cube and Fission engine.

Don't you mean the iCar with an iFission engine, with built-in iPhone, iPod Video, iCoffee, and iDirections? ;)

I thought the reason that the beatles weren't on itunes was because when they were a young band they sold all their copyrights to the records company and michael jackson bought the record company and he won't let them put the beatles on itms. Is this correct?

No. Jackson owns the rights to re-recordings and to the sheet music, not to the existing recordings. The Beatles' CDs were delayed, too (to 1987, if I recall correctly), mainly because the record companies had a hard time coming to terms with the Beatles.

i don't get the big whoop about the "supposed" PB update. 200 mhz FSB??? what can you do with that? they need to get their stuff together. I won't even think about a PB until the mactels come out. by then they'll be up to 800mhz fsb and dual core...now THAT is a POWER book.

The new chip, 200 mbz fsb, faster hard drive, and better screens would be a nice upgrade to a POWERBOOK. Nuff said...
;)

I have been thinking of ways to build my own windows MCE box that would do this for a while. My DVD collection just passed 400 and I'm looking for a way to catalogue some, if not all, of my DVDs on a computer with a nice pretty interface for finding movies and a simple way to rip a movie into it.

.... as of yet i cannot find any software that allows me to do that easily. If apple offered something like this, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Even better, allow for streaming to other computers. That way you could access your entire DVD collection from any computer in the house.

mmmmm

i say no

check out my 'timing' posts above (#250 etc) as to why updates and stand-alone new products are just not on.

sorry :)

Well. Isn't this something. I'm really surprised.

I mean, nobody has laughed at my jokes? Even the one with Bill Gates coming out from behind the curtain?

Come on, that was brilliant! :p

one more thing...

When was the last time Steve said one more thing to PM or PB updates? He never does, this is always used for new ipod updates or new product introductions. I would say iTunes Media Store/Ipod Video- it's been in the works for a while now and its an incremental increase in functionality. Eventually u will see the iTablet- Possible same time next year.

I know that the Ipod is the cash cow for Apple. If you read my post you would understand that what i mentioned is that the ipod is a nice machine but is not a important for professional folks. Unless you are a teenager or student, I don't see why people are going crazy about another Ipod.
Apple is focusing too much on the ipod and forgetting about what they used to be so good at, making amazing computers and software for professionals that depend on it.
People are probably going crazy about another iPod because more people have iPods than have Macs. If Apple were a bit wiser, they would wind a way t market the two together and build marketshare. But, for now at least, Apple is focusing on the "cash cow" ... and that is the iPod, iTMS, and perhaps vPod lines. It's all about the bottom line.
