Steve needs to be pelted in the head with an ipod.

Yeah, great, ipods are pretty much the only things keeping apple in business, but seriously, do we really need ANOTHER ipod update? the ipod is a healthy, well updated line while the computer division of "Apple Computer" seems to have gathered dust.

I need a new powerbook and I know 2 other co-workers who are itching to buy new powerbooks as soon as they come out... Sadly though, the only powerbooks you can get are under-powered well aged models.

Well, I don't think we have to take it completely literally. They could introduce 2 things, but titling it "2 More Things" doesn't work, that's not his catchphrase...

In fact, Tuesday might be good to announce speed-bumped PMac and PBooks, before the iPod Video stuff...
Beat ya to it, I think this is a very feasible thing and could happen, it would be brilliant marketing as well

What if Apple releases updated PM's and PB's on the 11th, then as a "one more thing" on the 12th release the new iPods?

This is a very interesting idea! One more thing makes all the sense putting things this way!

Good shot!

Didn't a quote from some rumor site say "Apple will intro NEW products" this month?

PowerMacs and PowerBooks aren't "new" products, they won't hold a one more thing event to announce revised models. My bet is that they will be announced quietly on 10/11 (Tuesday) w/ the iPod Media Event happening on 10/12 (Wednesday). It's the Itunes Movie Store and Video Pod, No Doubt about it.

Another week of waiting to see what next wednesday Brings. At least the MLB playoffs are on this week to keep my mind somewhat busy. :p

If this really happens, you heard it from me first :D

Calm Down...

Okay. AFter thinking for 2.3 minutes, I have afew pointers.

1) Take the curtain seriously. Many people thought (myself included) that the change pocket on the iPod nano invite did NOT mean "1000 songs in your CHANGE pocket", rather "Another revolutionary new product". And we were wrong. He even used the 1000 songs in your change pocket in his presentation! If the curtain's on there, its important.

2) One More Thing... MAY just mean that its finalizing the product lineup for the year, not that one product is coming out. I don't know.

3) There won't be any Intel Macs 'till 2006. It says on Apple's Developer site.

My guess? I don't know. An iPod video seems likely, but I wouldn't want one. Make me change my mind, Apple!

If I were Apple and I just released Nano...

Why would I drag people back to introduce, yet another iPod? Think about the audience. They are all thinking, "I hope it's not another new iPod." If it were me, and I was sitting there and Steve comes out sporting something with the iPod, I'd just get up and walk out. Let the Nano sink in for a bit Steve. Really. And all you psyched up people all happy for watching video on your iPods, do you really have so much anticipation in such a product? You and the iTunes phone people need to get together and go nuts.

The rest of us, well we hope Apple does something with the computers. Seriously. Or something a bit more fresh than the great, but never-ending iPod promo.

Personally, I'd like to seriously see Apple release a new audio+midi interface to compete with Pro Tools' Digi 002. Something for Logic and Garageband. Maybe get Coldplay, for instance, to give a live session with the thing. Now that would be worth some hype.

Exec at 20th Century Fox: "October 12th, One More Thing, red cutains, hmm. Holy ****! Apple is going to do a movie store, so that must mean that Universal and Sony have signed a download deal! And we only have 8 days to catch up! Somebody get on the phone and get our movies to Apple!!"

Of course, now it all makes sense! It's a wearable iPod in the form of a velvet cape!

I'm gonna side with the camp that thinks Apple wants to keep iPod focus on the nano for the holiday season. I also agree the curtains are very movie theatre looking... my guess:

*iTMusicS becomes iTMediaS (as was already mentioned), and they start selling movies.
*They launch a new Airport product that has video output so you can stream media content to your TV/Home Theatre. $150-200, decodes MPEG2/4/H.264 internally, 802.11g of course, and still does the audio work the current Express does.
*Next January, after the nano sells 10,000,000,000,000 units for XMas, and the iTMS sells/rents/whatever they do it's 1,000,000,000 movie they launch an iPod video.

Of course PodFuture (MR member) called the nano to a T and he says vPod, so what do I know!?

"One more thing I have decided that as a better way to find out what the consumer really wants we all at Apple will be hiring a member from the MacRumors community iDM to receive free products before they are released as well as a $1,000,000 per year as a tester. We also will be listening to his ideas as possibilities for new products.......Ladies and Gentlemen our new Product Development Assistant"

-Steve Jobs on Oct. 12th

I guarantee thats what he says!

Remember how the nano followed an invitation that was a close-up photo of the small pocket on jeans? I think that sets a precedent, and based on the curtains it will be a video ipod with downloadable movies, probably at $4.99 each.

I still think portable video will be a bust. Unlike with video, you can actually do stuff while listening to music/podcasts/audio books. TRANSportable video does make sense, but a powerbook/ibook handles that fine.

If they do pull this off, though, then it would also in part explain why Steve Jobs has taken a hard (but perfectly reasonable) stance with the music labels.

god damnit, i wish i hadn't bought a nano the day after they came out

still, i can't see that this is a computer related announcement. those will probably be done at mwsf [and any updates before macintel will probably just be speedbumps]

i'm guessing it's itunes video store + ipod video. its the logical next step.apple is great at content delivery so an iVideo store doesn't seem unlikely.

it'd be nice if they just update the firmware for the nano's to play videos. i know it seems real unlikely..but it'd go down a mega hit with the press [apple gives away something free] and would fit in with the 'one more thing' theme.

then again, how many movies can you get on a 4gb disk? :(

The trouble with the nano is that it only satisfies the 70% of people who want a 1000 songs or so. There's nothing new and exciting for the holiday market to buy at the $300 mark... hence, why they keep the Nano buzz and almost reinvigorate it with a new 5G iPod? Imagine all those articles contrasting the two - the Nano gets another burst of activity on the back of the new one.

This is the time of year to introduce consumer devices. So far, Apple have kept ahead of the curve in iPod design. The competition are creating some better looking, nicely features lines at the top end of the market; it's time for Apple to leapfrog them again - just before the holiday season when there's no time for them to react and yet another tranche of the MP3-buying public end up with iPods

Lol. I love threads were nobody reads anything. I posted the same thing 5 times and nobody noticed on the Mighty Mouse thread.

I agree. I've already voiced my opinions on what music issues they need to fix before even considering video, but that's beside the point. Apple doesn't care about music. What's so cool about having lo-res video in your pocket?

  • You can't watch it while walking/riding/driving.
  • It's hardly worth watching at all on a tiny screen.
  • Plugging it into a TV somewhere else isn't going to give you near the video or surround sound quality of a DVD.
  • Very few people carry DVDs around with them wherever they go. Thus very few people are saying to themselves right now "Gosh, I wish I could take my whole collection of DVDs with me at once!" Contrast that to the situation with music, where most people were taking a few CDs in the car, making the iPod an obvious extension of that behavior.

Can video be anything but a gimmick? Even if it's just for video podcasts, you still have to sit down somewhere to watch it. You can't watch while driving like you might listen to an audio podcast.

This is a serious question for all of you who are frothing at the mouth for a video iPod: how do you really expect to use it? Do you expect the video to be as beneficial as the music capability, or do you expect to play with it a few times and rarely use it after that? Would you really use it every day? Every week even? Think about it and be honest.

I had an iPod photo (before it got stolen :() and I loaded a few hundred photos on it, but I really never used that feature. Not once did I have a situation where I wanted to pull it out and start showing pictures to people. Glad I didn't buy the AV cable, as the photo capability was clearly just a gimmick to me. Isn't video more of the same?

I want to know why it's going to be the next great thing. Besides the fact that it's from Apple and Steve Jobs says it's great. Convince me. I'm a skeptic.

I'd much rather have an improved music experience (gapless) any day. I'll pay handsomely for that. Too bad I'm in the minority, I guess!

Damn, you win. I thought about it when posting my first comment in the thread, but didnt feel like typing it all out. Oh well, I guess the spotlight will eventually swing my way...

It is clearly not Mac product updates.

It is either a new/updated iPod or a completely new product.

If I were a betting man, I'd say it is a 5th generation iPod with video capabilities. It will either be the default iPod, or it will be a high end line, iPod video, akin to the iPod photo. It is clear that Apple sees the small flash based devices as the iPod future for music-only products. Aren't minis and nanos WAY more popular than the big ones?

The observation about iTunes not having updated free music videos is astute. They are clearly going to a pay-model. Music videos will be organized in a minor update to iTunes in the Source pane. They will sync to 5G iPods. If you have any other iPod, you'll get the "some media won't play on you iPod" error during a sync.

However... I do not believe we will see feature length movies or an Apple Movie Store. First must come the organizational program for movies. I don't see it being lumped with iTunes, and we just had a "major" iTunes update. Plus, we have heard NOTHING from movie studios about whiney DRM/price issues. Content providers love to kvetch. Moreover, I see Apple viewing 5G iPods with music video playback to be "testing the waters" for the inevitable movie/movie store.

This takes into account the rumors we have heard (about 5G iPods being prepped, licensing music videos).

I could be totally off. Honestly, I don't think all of that would warrant a special event or a "one more thing", whereas a full movie rollout WOULD.

OR it's a whole new consumer device. Weren't Apple supposed to be designing a whole line of such devices?

Regardless, it's pretty exciting.

Lets all take a deep breath and remember Appleinsider was one of the sites sued by Apple AND the iPod was first introduced at the theatre in San Jose.

Appleinsider may well have been fed misinformation by Apple to discredit it.

Just One More Thing with a red curtain...
