New Video iPods?l still have doubts about it...
Movie Store? A Sure Yes...Yeah and maybe tis time it's not all about iPods, it's time for some major upgrades for Macs...

Deep Thoughts

Ok...i'm gonna go out on a limb, throw in my two cents and take a stab at it. I think Steve will say "We had promised you that we would have updates before switching to Intel. Unfortunately I was worng. Today we are announcing that all iBooks, PowerBooks and PowerMacs will begin shipping with Intel processors by the end of the month. In addition we will be dropping prices anywhere from $200-$500 depending on the model."

Come on Apple has been working on this transition for years(WWDC 2005).
Steve even demonstrated Tiger running on an Intel processor.
Imagine how they could cash in on the holiday computer market if they switch to Intel now and lower prices. I'm sure he could apply his RDF and have most software developers exporitng their code by now.

Just a thought.

A big problem I see with a future iPod video is that one "cannot" rip one's own DVDs to one's own iPod. I mean, not legally.

Is it possible that Apple could work out a deal with the movie studios that incorporated deCSS technology into iTunes? Then Apple could attach Fairplay to the decrypted DVD. This would protect fair use as well as keep movies DRM'd. But is such an agreement even legitimate under the DMCA?

The move studios cannot expect someone who owns a DVD to repurchase the same compressed movie just for the iPod.... haha of course they can!

I think that the first generation of iPod video will be for music videos bought in iTunes. Of course someone will hack it so "Mactheripper files" can be synced.

Possibly, but not absolutely.

The Nano was announced at a special event in conjunction with the ROKR. The Nano already took the wind out of the ROKR's wings, I doubt Motorola would have wanted even more Apple hardware to debut then.

Also, it makes perfect sense to introduce the Nano by itself and give it prime media time, and then introduce a new iPod (and/or Mac updates.) Had the Nano come out at the same time as the iPod Video, either or both would have gotten short thrift in the press. Both are very newsworthy, and very important products for Apple (the Nano especially, since it replaced Apple's best-selling iPod.)

At the very same time the Nano was introduced, almost all iPod billboards were replaced with Nano billboards. They couldn't have done this with a combined rollout.

Finally, there have been rumors for at least a couple of weeks that the iPod Video would be introduced in early October.
those are very good points indeed. i can certainly follow your logic.

i do agree with you that we could be seeing a video ipod. but then why the short notice (only one week prior to announcement)?

logic tells me that something beyond apple's control has just fallen into place... something requiring a third party like movie companies...

this does not preclude a video ipod as well as new movie content.

possible?

Why does it have to include an iPod?! They just updated the broader-termed iPod line with a new (not updated) product. And besides that, consider what has more to do with movies/cinema/whatever currently: computer hardware/software, or an mp3 player. Seriously, I'd bet more on a revision of Final Cut Pro or new PowerMacs over a video iPod, but frankly, I'm not betting on anything. Why would Apple release a huge amount of brand-new stuff at a nondescript little "invitation only" event?

One More Thing

The XBox 360 comes out right before Thanksgiving...a $400-$500 iPod could never compete.

wow, 13 pages in only a few hours. Apple has drugged us all.

Oct 11 (Tues) was not a good day for the event because that is the day for the earnings announcements.

"One More Thing"

Of course, although I am entirely against this idea, Apple COULD NOT have introduced the iPhone at its last media gathering. Motorola would have been like..."um...howabout not...."

So that's a possibility.

Plus, although I know it's been said before, a quick reminder:

www.apple.com/movies

www.iphone.org

Both curious sites, am I right?

Everyone listen up....I can predict the future....there will be NO new iPod...as for the rest, it's so great I can't tell. The Nano is selling very well as well as the regular iPod and the new iTunes stores are selling great, that is why no new iPod is coming out...trust me.

People are probably going crazy about another iPod because more people have iPods than have Macs. If Apple were a bit wiser, they would wind a way t market the two together and build marketshare. But, for now at least, Apple is focusing on the "cash cow" ... and that is the iPod, iTMS, and perhaps vPod lines. It's all about the bottom line.

So perhaps an Apple computer/media center with the mac mini form factor with a ipod dock. That would certainly bring a lot together.

I'm looking for a way to catalogue some, if not all, of my DVDs on a computer with a nice pretty interface for finding movies and a simple way to rip a movie into it. .... as of yet i cannot find any software that allows me to do that easily. If apple offered something like this, I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Yup. Sounds like what I want too. Of course I'd also like it to be able to handle home movies as well.

My kids (2 & 4) eat CDs and DVDs (not literally, but close), so I built them a discless edutainment box using an old PIII and Alcohol 52%. Now the 4 year old can play his games when he wants to without needing adult help. I'd like something similar for their DVDs, preferably with an interface so easy the two year old can drive. ;-)

Of course the TiVo is pretty close to this already, I just haven't had a chance to hack it beyond increasing the size of the hard drive.

Possible but I think it's more likely due to this.

There are precedents already: both July 4th and Labor Day were on a Monday. Come Tuesday, there were no Apple updates, but there were on Wednesday. This has been a pattern for some time now...

anyone notice the 15" combo, 15" super, and 17" are all at 1-2 days shipping now???

It's called a 'big bang' introduction. If you allow too much time you don't turn as many heads. You want to compress the ink that flows on these announcements.

At the circus... "step right up, step right up, the show starts in one minute". You know the idea.

My gut feeling is that music videos and 1/2 hour TV shows or classic cartoons will be available to purchase on ITMS.

Disney/ABC will have content available and strangely a Disney/PIXAR deal will be announced in the days following this Apple event.

The entire pro line will also be refreshed. G5's will finally hit 3.0 Ghz and the PowerBook 2.0 GHz.

I honestly have no idea what I'm talking about :)

Well. Isn't this something. I'm really surprised.

I mean, nobody has laughed at my jokes? Even the one with Bill Gates coming out from behind the curtain?

Come on, that was brilliant! :p

futurist I love your comments and especially the scenario with Bill.

So I will elaborate my own, since noone reads our stuff. The red drape is a skirt. "All you need is love" is being played as the skirt is being raised. Steve, Paul and Ringo is seen being seated/laying in a huge Madonna like bed with cardboard posters of John and Paul tucked in between them. Steve announces that 'through the help of Michael J. the ultimate reunion has happened'. Michael then moonwalks over the stage screaming "we love the world - yiiiihiiii". Steve announces that Apple has bought the total Beatles catalogue for $500 mill. and that through continued partnership they hope to become the ultimate label (Apple - get it). Michael promises to never be involved in the project and Apple shares goes up to $80 the next day.

new iPods - NO VIDEO - 40,60,80 gig versions. Form factor remains mostly the same, possibly slightly smaller than current

VideoPod - the so-called video ipod will be released in the form of a 10" iBook.

iBooks - new 10" model, marketed as the Video iPod. Also available in 13" and 15" versions. All versions are widescreen resolutions. All models will have the freescale dual-core g4 in them.

PowerBooks - 13", 15", 17" versions. All will be widescreen HD. All will have either freescale dual-core g4 (probably most likely) or single core g5.

iMac - stays largely the same. Possible upgrade to dual core g5 chips.

PowerMac - Dual Dual-core G5

This will be a major upgrade to every single line and will allow the PPC to go out with a bang before intels start coming. Oh and these models will all lose their G* designations. As of these models apple will introduce some kind of new naming scheme in preparation for intels. It is very possible that there will be no specification at all other than "iMac," "PowerMac," etc.

i think i'm actually more dumb after reading that.

It's quite possible that Apple did have some last-minute negotiating so they couldn't set an exact date until recently.

When Apple was working out the iTunes music store, they actually had to individually negotiate with many artists who had contracts that gave them rights to online music sales. Steve Jobs actually sat down with Dr. Dre to work things out...

Apple Cinema Display 44" + size!

what about an Apple Cinema Display 44" + size!
maybe Apple is moving into that direction with a possibility of a DVR device on it. That would give the idea of Theater curtain that is portrait on the event invitation.

I think everyone talking movies is way out in left field. This will be music videos, not feature-length movies.

Curtain=stage, not movie theatre.
