i hope they put a backlight into the clickwheel. if the Nano has it then w00t! but the big 'pods NEED it. Apple should include lights on all of their input thingies. every keyboard, every iPod clickwheel. ok just those 2. would be a beautiful sight.

if they just added a backlit keyboard to the 12" PowerBook i'd scoff those ginger crumpets and run off to my nearest [official] Apple store!... Birmingham here i come!

Lights are completely unnecessary as the controls are intuitive. Adding lights for the sake of adding lights is not worthy of an event.

vPod? Meh.

They can add whatever they want to the iPod concept as long as it does not compromise the music end of it. Don't offset the wheel or make the screen too big. Big screen means more expensive and I don't need to have my music titles in 25 point text.

I want a 100GB iPod so I can get all my music on it.

I honestly think it has nothing to do really with anything anyone is saying...when presentations arise and people on these boards don't know what they are...they put all there fantasies in a post hoping they'll happen.

Is that a bad thing?

iPhone.org ?????

is the iPhone.org link a joke ? Im probably the only one who is to out of it to figure out. Is it a redirect to apple or does apple actually own the URL ???

Maybe it is just a software announcement, the newest, best video editing program developed by Apple for the "Year of HD".

I assume it somehow relates to iPods because they sent an invite to iLounge. Which is a site dedicated to iPods.

Well, that's kind of a gray area...they've more become dedicated to iPod, iTunes and anything dealing with "that side" of Apple, thus (supposedly) the change in name from iPodlounge to iLounge.

PowerBooks, come out where ever you are..! :p

I'm hoping for Tivo-like software by Apple that runs on OS X. With all the video and audio experience Apple has, why couln't they do it?

And Madonna has a new album coming out next month... maybe as part of her iTunes exclusive deal, they are releasing the Madonna ipod?

If that's the case, I know for a fact that the iPod won't be available in white.

It's not a desktop, it's not a laptop, not an iPod..

It will be the new consumer all-in-one video/tv/music box that will attempt to replace your stereo, your Tivo, and anything else that isn't nailed down.

buy your apple stock now.

those are clearly movie theater curtians

bring on the Video iPod!!!!

They are not necessarily "movie" curtains...they are just curtains. Curtains are always used to hide things they don't want you to see.

Besides, what theater have you been to that have curtains over the whole screen?

A big problem I see with a future iPod video is that one "cannot" rip one's own DVDs to one's own iPod. I mean, not legally.

Is it possible that Apple could work out a deal with the movie studios that incorporated deCSS technology into iTunes? Then Apple could attach Fairplay to the decrypted DVD. This would protect fair use as well as keep movies DRM'd. But is such an agreement even legitimate under the DMCA?

The move studios cannot expect someone who owns a DVD to repurchase the same compressed movie just for the iPod.... haha of course they can!

I think that the first generation of iPod video will be for music videos bought in iTunes. Of course someone will hack it so "Mactheripper files" can be synced.

I posted this the other day too. I think Apple has probably talked to movie companies about having the ability to rip your DVD's to an iPod Video. The movies would not be the same quality, and would be locked to a single iPod via DRM. That would be pretty good protection IMO, as there are various programs that create unprotected videos.

They could even go as far as having a time-limitation (say 90 days) to prevent people from copying DVD's via rental or Netflix. If you own the DVD, then you could simply stick back in your Mac to 're-validate' your ripped version. It would be kind of a pain, but if the time period was 90 or 120 days it wouldn't be too bad (and would be worth it if that was the only way to get the movie companies' cooperation.)

It's quite easy to get around this already. But the ability to stick in a DVD, and hit 'Import' in iTunes would make a world of difference for regular consumers who have never heard of DeCSS or MactheRipper...

I'm sure the iPod video will accept normal video files, no hacking required. So the big question is, would movie companies rather have people's hard drives filled with unprotected movies (as they are now), or movies ripped from legitimate DVDs and protected with DRM to prevent illegal distribution?

The change in names is because Apple is preventing people from using the iPod name unless they have a license to. They changed the name to prevent being sued.

Alright, here's another totally off-the-wall idea.

Imagine this... a rebirth of the Newton, marketed as an iPod of sorts. Complete with an in-between version of OS X, to help point iPod fanatics back to the Macintosh platform. Of course it will have support for movies, probably a touch screen, support for music, wi fi, etc.

Is it too far-fetched?

certainly is-there goes the beauty and simplicity and profit margin of the ipod

It won't be an iPod Video...it's not logical...you people are crazy. You could fit next to nothing on there, and if all it will ONLY play music videos.

Steve Jobs does like to hint at what will be released at these events.

With the 1000 songs in your pocket event he introduced the Nano.

I believe as many have suspected it will be the introduction of the Video Store, along with a supported iPod.

1. Red Curtains, brings the Cinema to mind with a spotlight.

I do not see anything else. :)

OK but no new Macs upgrade before then end of this year ? People in many places in Europe reports that Mac hardware are scarce in many stores.... How they could have another iPod event that would overshadow the newly launched iPod nano ?

Thus the "supposedly". My explanation was iLounge's explanation, although it just as easily could have been the legal issues.

Apple would not list "One More Thing" on the invite unless it is a big introduction. It's a nod to Steve Job's custom of saving the big stuff for last, and then offhandedly introducing it by saying 'oh yeah, one more thing...'

A new video editing program, while quite neat, would not qualify as a really big event.

If you really want a "video iPod" get an mp4 player, I have one and love it. They are about the same price as an iPod and have photo, pics, and more. Mine even has a video camera and camera and mic for voice recording. The Video iPod is a no show I am certain.

If movies were further compressed, it could fit onto a vPod, think outside the box a little.
