my speculations breakdown

1) ipod video:

Pros -Seems good to me. curtins on the invite (though, true, movie theaters and curtins don't go together so much these days, but its a good image in that it does not completely giving away the movie idea, if that is indeed what it is.) -also the invites given to the ipod website people kind gives away the ipod theme.
- i also don't think a video ipod would take away publicity from the nano. i would look at it more like an introduction of a pro line of ipods. more features and a higher price.

Cons - watching the nano video from apple, they talk about how much time and effort their head designer guy and his team put in on it. Now, if apple was putting out a video ipod, it would surely be designed by him, but is it feasable to think he could have designed the nano, which to me seems flawless, and have time to give them a video ipod? i don't know, but this is the one thing that makes me think perhaps not ipod video.

2) Macs:

Pros - It seems possible that sales will slow now that people know about the chip switch. I for one, will be continuing to use my g3 imac until the switch instead of upgrading like i was planing on doing this year. So the invite says 'one more thing' which to me means new product, not just upgrades. This could be a good way of getting mac sales out of a possible pre chip switch slump. We all know the dual cores are out and i've been wondering 'where's the beef?' It seems about time they've put those new chips in and to avoid a possible sales slump, put 'em in a new box.

Cons - it was said media events aren't called often for macs - ipod websites invited and - MWSF relatively soon

3) Other:

Pros -"Year of HD" so what's apple done for HD this year? As far as i'm aware, its just been a couple upgraded software titles. Maybe something up their sleeve? Remember that asteroid thing and all those law suits?

Cons -There's been no rumors of anything along these lines as of late. Usually someone throws us a little tip or two here before things get launched and this time it seems to be the video ipod.

Summary: I'm not quite sure what its going to be. I'd be surpirsed if it were the video ipod (steve hasn't had many good things to say on that subject), the mac doesn't seem like the right venue, and the asteroid seems maybe the best bet but also a bit out of left field for things as of late. Maybe its just best not to get to hyped and just go with 80g ipod.

I wonder when we are going to see the Powermac updates. hopefully dual-core.
I just can't take another ipod announcement.
I love the ipods, but I make my living using Apple's professional computer line up. I have never heard someone making money listening music. so I hope it's not an Ipod again.
Please SJ, it's about time for you to please the professional crowd.

Mac Event!!!

And a lot of people here are expecting more than one thing... can you read this please: ONE more thing...

iPod with video og G5 iPod ? I don't think so... Apple will try to keep the buzz of the nano.... this is a Macintosh event guys...

JF

This is exactly what I was thinking! It will be a very good new Mac or a very very good update!

U-hU!!! :D

Sweet. Though I find it odd that Apple would organize a whole special event just to announce that they've finally conquered the annoying gap problem...

pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease gaplessplayback pleasepleaseplease whocaresaboutvideo pleasepleasepleaseplease

I want a x86 PowerBook (but I know this is unlikely), but if it is, my bank account will be missing £2000 in a few days. :D

Tagline: one more thing.

So, one thing, in all likelihood.

not imacs, they're doing well, not mini, that just gut a bump, not ibook, pb needs it first, not emac, apple pretends that doesn't exist, not xserve, the media doesn't care about that, not ipod shuffle, otherwise it competes with nano.

So, we've got:

Ipod. Most likely, b/c one more thing since the last announcment, of the nano, implies same line of thinking. Either video ipod, or majorly shrunken form factor ipod. Possibly both.

PB. quite likely, the line is hurting big time, limiting the ibook, and it has been ages since it got any updates. Also, likely not the first to move to intel, so this makes sense.

Powermac. Again, they've got good reason-selling very few, hasn't wowed in a while, dual core chips possible. Also, this is likely to be the last to move to intel, given talk of low end first, and also given that they aren't going to do it until a suitable chip is availible from intel, and that means dual core low power and fast-which will be the last of the next gen. of intel chips to come out.

Of course, I'm still hoping we get a couple. Apple sure has the incentive for all of those, particularly with x-mas around the corner.

Sorry to disappoint but...

Sorry to put some of you down, but it's more than obvious...

It's a media event for the video iPod and the iTMS for movies...NOTHING ELSE.

For those of you expecting new PMs or PBs, this is not gonna be the place nor the time...

I hope it's not going to be just a ipod event (video or no video). It's time the PB's and PM's got some love.

Hasn't Steve repeatedly said no vid ipod?? -- wasn't there rumors of an apple set top/mac mini/tv/movie projector system project??
I don't know why --- but I have this crazy feeling --- maybe with intel chips --- just rambling on

No. He initially would give reasons why video players haven't been very popular.

In recent interviews he has backed off of that, basically saying 'no comment':

JT: OK. One last question, Steve, and I appreciate your time. When are we gonna see a video iPod? What-- and what are the other future developments for the iPod?

SJ: Well, you know us. We never talk about future products. There used to be a saying at Apple: Isn't it funny? A ship that leaks from the top. So-- I don't wanna perpetuate that. So I really can't say.

HOLY S***!

HOLY S***! This is awesome! I'm expecting it to be what we were going to see at Expo Paris until it was delayed and the nano was seperated into the other press event. Power Macs, Powerbooks, and the 5G iPod. Video/Something Else? Maybe.

They would not hold a special event for a simple product update.
Sure they would. They used the same venue to introduce the U2 and color iPod models. Both were just variations on the existing 4th gen iPod, and really, the photo thing didn't make that much of a splash out there.

AppleInsider are predicting Video iPods.

Its unlikely we'll see:
a) any Intel based Macs - still too early.
b) just powerMac updates - why have such a song and dance...?

Hopefully Apple with intro Gen 5 iPod and some computer upgrades.

Forgive me for sounding like a jackass (it's a habit of mine...) but why all the anticipation for new iPods? I don't own an iPod, myself, but what is it about the current ones that you are all hoping to see changed/improved?

I could really use one with a bottle opener.

Begrudgingly, I tend to agree with you. Apple usually announces new machines at a venue where they can display them, where participants can take pictures of them, and mess around with them. OR, they speed bump machines between big Apple events.

Actually Apple bagged it for a bit after it was leaked....
If you say so... Apparently Apple approached M-Audio to help them in designing a breakout box, which to me is a good thing because, they have more expertise in this field. Eveyone assumes that once it didnt make an "official" introduction it was canned. iControl is essentially "asteroid". Plus, why would Apple have a Media Event for a controller for Garageband?

This event is all about the iPod/airport express. The consumer mainstream media could care less about dual core powermacs, or updated powerbooks.

video ipods

maybe powerbooks, but i doubt it, that would be more than ONE more thing

Well, I don't think we have to take it completely literally. They could introduce 2 things, but titling it "2 More Things" doesn't work, that's not his catchphrase...

In fact, Tuesday might be good to announce speed-bumped PMac and PBooks, before the iPod Video stuff...
