If they would have bought the iPhone after they took the brick out, they would not have been able to charge their new iPhones without an extra purchase.

Yes, but that extra purchase wouldn't need to be a charger. It could be a cable.

I’ll accept Apples argument for not supplying a charger if, I can take my old charger in for recycling and be issued a new charger for free. That way I’m not collecting phone chargers and I’m helping the environment just like Apple.

You're not helping the environment if you get a new charger. The less things you have the lower your carbon footprint will be.

Well this one exploded big time - 498 comments at the time of this writing (about to be 499).

We sure do love to argue, don't we? :)

Apple is selling a product with no way to power it. When you buy a brand new product, it should be suitable for the purpose intended. An electronic device with no way to power it is defective by definition.
Yup. I want all these people who are in favor of Apple to return their macbook chargers as well. I mean you can charge macbooks using any USB-PD charger, no? So why do they need a charger? It's for the environment!

The Justice Ministry in Brazil today ordered Apple to stop selling iPhones without a charger in the box, reports Reuters. Brazilian officials say that Apple is giving customers an incomplete product when the power adapter is not included with the purchase, a move the government claims is a "deliberate discriminatory practice against consumers."

Apple has been fined 12.275 million reais (~$2.34 million) for selling iPhones without chargers, and Brazilian officials are forcing the company to cease offering any iPhone that does not come with a power adapter, including the iPhone 12 and newer.

The Brazilian state of São Paulo previously fined Apple close to $2 million for not providing a charger with modern iPhones, which the São Paulo consumer protection agency said was a violation of Consumer Law Code. Apple also lost a 2022 lawsuit in the country after a customer who did not receive a charger sued.

Apple has told Brazilian officials that not including a power adapter with the iPhone offers environmental benefits and cuts down on waste, but Brazil has thus far rejected this argument.

Apple stopped providing chargers with iPhones starting with the 2020 launch of the iPhone 12 lineup. In most countries, Apple no longer ships iPhones with EarPods or a power adapter, including just a USB-C to Lightning charging cable. Apple says that most customers already have power adapters on hand to charge with, and has told customers that removing these accessories is part of its effort to "reach [its] environmental goals."

The Justice Ministry's order comes one day ahead of Apple's iPhone 14 announcement, which will see the debut of updated iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models.

Update 1:40 p.m.: In a statement to Bloomberg, Apple says it will appeal the ruling:

As most chargers out there is currently slow chargers and most phones fast charge, I kinda agree. And fast charging is a selling point. I get the environment part, but that’s not why Tim Apple does it. Money in the bank baby.

Let’s not even get into the durability of Apple cables….

The retail price should be with charger and cable.

Have them in separate boxes, retail would be fine, save sku’s. If you ALREADY have a charger or cable, you get that items RETAIL price deducted (to avoid reseller profiteering).

Because it doesn't make sense.

What if I am coming from Android phone who is using Micro-USB cable? What if my old USB-A cable not working? You might have old cable or power brick, doesn't mean everyone else in the Earth have.

What is so freaking hard to include a power brick?
Then you are a minority. Android has had usb c for years.

Good. I’m all for cutting down on waste but we all know it’s straight up a money grab. If it weren’t, Apple would allow people to get a free charger per new iPhone if truly needed.
me too i am all in for cutting down on waste , force Apple to sell new phones every 2 years ! they robbing us every year new phone with yearly beta software. When i suggested EU should do more on that front , some people here defended Apple

I have a single USB-C charging brick. It was from my iPad Pro, but that's my only charger, which means I need to switch out the cable because the iPP cable is USB-C to USB-C, while iPhone is still USB-C to Lightning.

Apple didn't "help" the environment. If I buy a 2nd charging brick, Apple are simply diverting the waste to another vendor. Apple can claim their move is "green" and put up some BS stats, while another company picks up the sale and is responsible for the waste from the manufacturing of their product.

It's disingenuous.

On the phone side, yes, but not on the charger side. Sure, maybe Samsung mid-high end models and Pixel, but the rest of the OEMs especially the Chinese (who use their own proprietary fast charging methods) are still utilizing USB-A on the charger end. So majority of people still only have USB-A chargers, not USB-C.

Yup. It's only "green" in terms of money for Apple.
Pretty much all Apple authorized stores in my country will always offer new buyers to buy the charger. How's that saving the environment? The net effect is just more sales for Apple, with reduced cost in their iPhone shipping volume due to the smaller boxes.

Problem is people will ALWAYS take something for free.

I do agree with apple here. I have 22 iPad and iPhone chargers. The only one I use is iPad Pro usb-c. I have a nightstand charger and usb plug
Sockets.

The problem with brazils take is apple will now just bundle the phone and charger and put the price up $20 solving exactly nothing.

Sounds like a money grab fro. The government!

Wow! I just scanned the comments here. I'm kind of shocked by the number of comments I see seemingly supporting the "Brazilian officials". It would be interesting to do a poll though to see exactly which way people are thinking.

Hey, we should be producing and buying less stuff, not more stuff. How many of you have boxes and boxes full of old cables and power blocks that you never use? I bet all of you over the age of 25 have at least one box.

I'm going to be recommending that in the future all devices have accessories sold separately. I don't even want to be sold a cable. I'll buy it separately at the time of ordering if I need one. Is that so difficult?

I don't own an iPhone charger. I charge it from my MacBook Pro. Do none of you have laptops with USB-C connections? Where are all the Apple Mac users?

Who are these "Brazilian officials"? I want to write them a letter!

Like this is the number one issue facing Brazil!

I'd have thought simply offering a free USB-A to Lightning cable, or even a USB-C to USB-A adaptor that would allow the supplied cable to plug into USB-A, would have addressed almost all real need. Include a token in the box that can be redeemed in a shop or online - ideally via all third-party sellers. Thus they only supply when customers ask, and limit demand to one per customer.

I would not have taken Apple up on a free cable. But, given its possible use for other things, an adaptor might have been of some limited use - especially if I did not already have a USB-C adaptor for my car.

I suspect many people do most of their charging in vehicles. Would it not make sense for Apple to supply a 'cigar lighter' to Lightning device for them?

When I bought my iPhone 12, I had to buy a charger because I didn't have USB-C chargers at home. Nobody did at the time. They didn't even lower the price of the iPhone or offer a charger for free. I bought one separately from the Apple Store and it was delivered in this huge box (see image below), like 20X the size of the charger and 5X bigger than the iPhone.

Very hypocritical to say it's for "Environmental reasons". It was one of their finest profit strategies.

You don't need an USB-C charger to charge the iPhone 12.

If you upgraded from an older iPhone, you could have used the same charger for the new phone.

i guess you are saying people that need one are too stupid to buy one when they need it? I hope they add one back in for everyone... and raise the price, just so i can watch the othe 95% of people that didnt need one complain about having to pay for somerhing they didnt need.

Government in the 2020's: protecting consumers from having to make such drastically difficult buying decisions, like buying a charger if they need one. I suppose i should be amazed that people still manage to drive their cars around, since they only come with a few gallons of gas in them and they apparently cant figure out what to do on their own.

There’s very few electronic products made today that will be in wide use in 30 years. EVERYTHING is “throw away electronics” well before you get to the scale of a human life of 60-70.

But a charger isn't. Most of them will easily last 10 years or more. I have never had a USB charger fail due to age.

If you have an old USB-A charger, you can buy an USB-A-to-Lightning cable. No new charger is necessary to just charge an iPhone if you have an existing one.

Also it doesn't have to work for everyone. Yes, some people have to buy a new charger and that's OK as long as the total number of chargers produced by Apple is reduced significantly.

These are awesome ideas. Let people decide themselves. Give people choice in the matter.

ehhh?
what about they sell you every year a new phone ? Does that count as a more stuff?

But this doesn't mean Apple is not produce wired earbuds, charing bricks, charging cables... Apple likely still producing as much, but just sold separately...

No, they are selling a lot less.

If they sold as many separately it would mean about $9 billion in extra revenue in their accessories category and we don't see that.

Why would anyone going to use AirPods buying EarPods?
Lot's of people have enough chargers or chargers from third party or using chargers from iPad or Macs to charge.

In a few years, most small electronics will come without a charger.

Fined Apple $2.34m? Wow. Based on the ratio of Apple's net worth to mine, if Brazil fined me by the same relative amount it wouldn't be possible to express how small that fine would be unless we express it as a percentage of a cent.

In total I wonder how many millions of dollars Apple choose to routinely pay in fines over the period of a year for deliberately breaching some territory's laws?

They say "use the charger you already have", but then give you a Lightening-to-USB-C cable... when all the old chargers where USB A. It's such a BS money grab that just pisses off customers.

You're a previous iPhone or iPad user, just use the old charging equipment, no new charger necessary.
Even if you were a user of a recent MacBook or some Android phone, you would have an USB-C charger.

Only those with no USB-A or USB-C charger would have to buy a new charger to charge a new iPhone.
