Don’t make them to begin with. Plenty of 3rd party making chargers already, with many more useful than Apple’s own (higher wattage, multi port, etc).

People are arguing about waste and blame it on consumers, while Apple themselves already made those chargers to begin with. If the argument is that most people already have chargers, then stop making them if they cared so much about waste.

Most people having chargers is not all which means Apple (or someone else) would still need to make them. By not including them with the iPhone, Apple is at least cutting down on excess production of chargers. The problem is that some see this as Apple being cheap and doing it for money/profit reasons.

Those people probably value money more than the environment. That’s not a criticism, just a best guess. They are probably more likely to be climate sceptics, again, just a guess.

Easy no cable & charger in the box I don't purchase. Is just a phone and not that important to me. Apple just saw an opportunity to expand it's margin under the name of the environment plain and simple. IMO it was more about reducing the packaging to fit more iPhone's into a standard airfreight container.

Paying north of $1K USD I fully expect such basic items to be included. Last I spoke in an Apple store and requested the charger & cable be part of the deal I was refused. So Apple lost a sale of a top tier iPhone as again it's just a phone and there's no shortage of other options...

If Apple was genuinely concerned about the environment they would very much have a different design language and a longer product support cycle. As for Brazil more countries should take the same stance and Apple can always offer the cable & charger gratis for those that need. Money and all...

What a BS statement. Always has been always will be.
They do. I have got about 5 spare. Want one? I’ll happily send them to Brazil too.
It’s better for the environment we don’t produce more when so many people have a usb charger at home. Who doesn’t these days?

Apple should remove the usb-c to lightning cable next. I haven't used it at all, and that would allow Apple to shrink their iPhone packaging even smaller.
They should definitely unilaterally make changes for all customers based on your needs.

Great, thats exactly how people should be buying products by weighing up and the pros and cons and making an informed decision.

Yes, excuse us for feeling "entitled" to an integral part of the phone purchase. Something that was previously included and then removed without a price reduction. Totally the definition of entitlement.

Only if you don't already have a powered USB-C port (or USB-A port with a C-to-A adapter) or charger already. And if you don't, then you can buy one really cheaply. Demanding that Apple give you one for free or be forced to sell you one is indeed an attitude of entitlement. Apple tells you what's included with the iPhone. Don't like it or can't afford to spend an additional $10-20 if you need a charger after you just paid $$$ or $$$$ for a phone? Then don't buy an iPhone!

It takes a while for people to adjust to the ‘new normal’ but I bet in a few years time you won’t be able to buy any phone with a cable or charger in the box. The trajectory is to remove these things from the box.

OEMs have been cutting accesories out. I remember the original Moto G didn't come with a charger. But that's a cheap phone, not a $1000 phone. Cutting cost is cutting cost, and that's fine. But the environmental marketing is just taking consumers for fools. The fact that Apple still made those chargers to begin with (to sell them separately) means their environmental excuse is just marketing. If they truly cared about waste, stop making the waste to begin with. Just stop making chargers altogether, and let people buy 3rd party chargers.

Brasile dont agree with you

I'm not even quite sure why they did it. The charger can't have been expensive to manufacture and there isn't exactly a huge opportunity cost to it either (not everyone is going to buy the official Apple branded charger). It just doesn't make much sense to me.

If you sell around 200 million iphones per annum and you can save $5 (at cost) by scrapping a charger then that $ 1 billion per annum.

In relative terms with Apple making around 95 billion in 2021 and 2021, it is more than 1% to the bottom line.

But in absolute terms, a billion is a crap load of money.

Rember Tim is a logistics/operational guy so, rightly or wrongly, these 'gains' would appeal to him

I buy a device that requires charging, but the charger is sold separately.....
So I can't use a device more than once, unless I buy a charger (if I don't have one)....

Of course it is a money grab. --

They could sell them separately, box them separately, but simply ask the customer if they need a charger upon the purchase of the device, and if so, simply add it there at no additional charge. (As long as they are buying a new device)

Forcing to buy the charger is worse than the printer/ink model. (Where it is more reasonable to say that you'll have to buy more ink, as it is a consumable, rather than a 'part' -- and even with that, new printers include small ****** cartridges to at least get you started so you can actually use the device).

This shi*t is almost like selling a car with no tyres, and forcing you to buy them at an additional cost.

Yeah, the dealership also would save tons of emissions by selling cars with no tyres....

I'm pro environment, but this charger move is outright bs. Good on Brazil.

Good. Every country should do this. While Apple charges an arm and a leg for these, they cost them a buck or two in reality.... and since they also throttle charging speeds when using non-Apple certified chargers with software, its even more scummy that they don't include this. When they did, it was bad enough it was the crappy slow brick.... something no other phone maker with fast charging has ever done.

Not smack Samsung that started to copy this practice after mocking Apple for it.

Great, thats exactly how people should be buying products by weighing up and the pros and cons and making an informed decision.

More people should have this approach, then the faster Apple will change. Apple completely botched the 2016 MacBook Pro design and compounded it with the Butterfly Keyboard. Today we have Mac's with more than adequate thermal headroom, sensible port solutions, reliable keyboards and no gimmicks (Touchbar). Why? the professional community spoke out very negatively and their endorsement is important to Apple...

Apple want's an iPhone in my hand it knows what to do. If Apple is too cheap/greedy to do so as said options abound. Same applies to other companies that pull such stunts, I'll just walk away.

And since the charger is a very common, non-proprietary one that you can buy from any of hundreds of manufacturers, it's not a big deal. You can of course also charge it using ANY device that has a powered USB port (e.g. laptops, desktops, power banks, etc.)
