I think it is about time they updated the iSight camera in all of their products. 1.3 MP video camera just isn't enough (for me) anymore. So the 3.2 would be awesome for that. The 5 Mp would be okay for the iPhone (which I will never get because it cost to much a month. I'm not paying $70+ a month for a phone) as long as it could process it well enough for it to actually use all 5 MP to their best.

Maybe 5 MP on the back and 3.2 goes to the front for ichat??

No, I think they would only have one camera per phone. How much do you want this thing to cost?!

If they wanted a front and back camera, Apple would perhaps try to have the camera flip itself from front to back...

Why should it go in a different device though?
I don't think the 9" device is that rumoured...
There's a number of rumours flying around, but that's the first I've heard of a 9" touch device.

Wow, you must not get out much then if you haven't heard the rumors of the 9 inch device. there's a whole forum topic about it!

Ding Ding!

Apple is the one everyone is catching up with. Just because someone puts a 12MP in their phone and neglects everything else, doesn't make it something to catch up to. But then there are those who always fail to see the bigger picture and focus on spec for spec.

Exactly! Show me another phone besides the iPhone with the same usability. I don't know of one that exists. I used a friends Sprint instinct. I'm sorry, it just doesn't come close.

If you don't have an iPhone and you use one of these "other" phones, you'll like it very much. Use an iPhone then put that down and pick up one of these sprint phones or some type of palm and you'll see that it's just a piss-poor wannabe copy of the iphone.

And before all you fanboys start flaming be about which phones are better than the iphone, how about you go talk about that on a non-apple/iphone forum. We like apple and the iphone. We're not interested in you jealous haters!

The necessarily short focal length in a device this thin, when coupled with a correspondingly small sensor, make camera discussions mostly irrelevant.

The quality of most camera phones I've used recently (Nokia N73 and iPhone 3G) remains poor at best.

The photos are so grainy they're practically useless, except for 'emergency' use.

If camera phones start achieving the quality of entry level P&S cameras, I'll care to listen... IF it EVER happens due to size and energy constraints.

Until then, a cell camera remains to me at least, a pretty useless feature.

I higher ISO would be great, and might be too much to ask from such a tiny lens. 3.2 Mpx would be fine for the kind of grab shots I take with my iPhone--especially if that means they can make better use of the light that hits the sensor. Remember that files size grows geometrically with number of pixels.

'bout time AAPL catches up with Nokia. I'm on my 5th 5MP phone (N79).

Welcome, iPhone users.

While the megapixal myth is a tough one for most non-photographers to grasp, so is the notion of a flash.

I really get a chuckle over on the CrackBerry Storm forums when they bash the iToy for having camera sensor with 1.2 less MP than the Storm, and no flash. To that I reply, "you mean that clear LED that comes on and does absolutely nothing?" I've even posted up identical dark shots where the iPhone's pic had WAYYY less noise than the Storms and explained why that is. Yet it always falls on deaf ears.

There is no way in eff'n hell you are going to get a flash with enough punch to do any good, and have battery life last past ten shots. A decent strobe takes a fair amount of juice to power, and we know that smartphones, the iPhone in particular, do not have vast resources available to provide that.

What does the average smartphone competitor have in regards to megapixels? If it's more than 3.2, Apple will still be accused of lagging in that regard. Of course megapixel rating isn't the only issue with the phone. A real flash and self-portrait mirror would be nice in addition to a quality lens and video recording.

If they're gonna fix it, they may as well do it right.

I can't wait until 3rd party accessories for the iPhone stop all of the nonsense discussion about what hardware should be built in.

Buy a camera.

Why anyone expects to find a good camera shoved into something as small as the iPhone is beyond my understanding.

But they do exist (I assume you're definition of "good" would be a standard point-and-shoot), and they have become increasingly common.

Apple should just get rid of the iPhone camera and instead turn it into a video camera that can be used for iChat on the iPhone. That would be far more useful than the crappy, dark and grainy photos it currently produces.

Maybe the 5 MP camera is being used as the main camera and the 3.2 MP camera is used as a front facing, video conferencing camera. That would be a nice iPhone.

So what is wrong with going for 3.2MP or 5Mp instead of 2MP?

It is true that megapixel myth is false to large extent
but comparing phone camera sensors only, 3.2MP is going to better than 2MP and 5MP is going to bette than 3.2MP and so on.... So what is the complain?

It could very well be 2MP stock drying out in the market as the minimum standard for camera phone is upgraded to 3MP range. And Apple is being forced to opt for 3.2MP as a result.

Another benefit of 3.2MP sensors are the fact that they mostly come with the auto-focus so iPhone can take better picture in more variety of situations.

For those who think current iPhone camera is good. Yes it is good but it can be better. Apple did not exactly excel by staying on the same technology for long time-they innovate and move forward.

I am sick of seeing this megapixel does not matter posts cause most of people here are applying it to wrong context. Aim for adopting higher megapixel here is to do better than previous generation iPhone NOT TO MIMIC P&S or DSLR. In this sense higher megapixel can be justified.

I'll take one future product please. Thanks. More importantly, autofocus!!! I'd rather keep 2 megapixels and get autofocus than get more MPs and keep a fixed focus.

That makes two of us. 2MP is fine for me. Lack of autofocus/antishake is intolerable!!!!!!!

Naw...
I think the 3.2MP will be for the MacBooks whereas the 5MP will be for the iPhone. That makes a lot more sense, well to me at least.

Maybe iPhone and standard Macs will get 3.2MP, and the Mac Pro computers will get the 5MP.

Seeing the iPhone OS 3.0 allow accessories to connect to the iPhone and iPod. Maybe Apple is bring back the quicktake camera have so it works standalone or with phone, pod or mac. Give it a big len decent sensor.

In which case the 3.2 is for built- in iSights including the phone or 5 could be double the silicon area for a happy snaps camera.

5 mp is possible for the iphone.. 3.2 for the macbooks, pros and airs. current macbook cam to go to the 'netbook'.. OR.. 5mp for iphone 3,1 , 3.2 mp cam for iphone 2,1.. would it make sense?

What did nokia name their App store? .....and where the qwerty? Welcome N79 user. Have fun with the User content!

They named it "Nokia Download!" when they came out with it about 10 years ago (admittedly they didn't make the most of it). And the qwerty's are on the E Series mostly.
