Apple Ordering 3.2 and 5-Megapixel Camera Sensors for iPhone and Future Product?

Buy a camera.

Why anyone expects to find a good camera shoved into something as small as the iPhone is beyond my understanding.

Then you understanding is lacking.

Other manufacturers can produce very very respectable cameras in devices that are infact smaller in volume.

A friend has just retired off the 12 month old 5 megapixel equipped phone he replaced it with a new version of the same thing (his provider offered it). I used it - it took DAMN good photos, and 640 x 480 movies that even looked great on a TV.

People need to understand that the iPhone is underspecified. It's camera and it's facilities are massively under-par.

Im currently using a Samsung INNOV8 (i8510) which has an 8 megapixel camera and it is by far the best camera on a phone that i have ever used and comes close to a p&s. Sure there will be people that dont care about the quality of the camera on a mobile but walk into any phone shop in the UK and one of the first things the salesperson will talk about to try to get you to buy is the quality of the camera on the new mobile.

I know this as my mate works for o2 and another for orange and to a lot of people a camera is a big deal as they dont own or dont want to carry a separate camera with them but want 1 device to do everything. Especially on these 18 month contracts that are becoming the norm, most people want the best bang for buck that they can get at the time.

The amount of teenagers i see with £400 symbian smartphones who dont know how to work them beyond texting and calling but have them for the camera feature alone is surprisingly high.

Anyway sorry about the long winded post. But just had a few thoughts to throw out there. :p

A 3.2MP cam can take good quality photos. I used to have a Canon Powershot A410 which was only 3.2 but took very good photos. Obviously that was a point and shoot and not a mobile too but if you look at the Sony Ericsson k800i it still takes great photos despite being a few years old.

I'd hope the 5MP is included, but I can't imagine I'd be using it predominantly as a camera.

Perhaps one camera is forward facing, the other backwards, for video chats and such? Too much hope there maybe? I'm not too fussed on video chats anyway.

You may have hit the nail on the head. One forward behind the screen for iChat etc. (not to mention security after a theft ... ) and the 5 MP for film and pictures! Remember this is well over HD Video specs too. Awesome!

It is true that megapixel myth is false to large extent
but comparing phone camera sensors only, 3.2MP is going to better than 2MP and 5MP is going to bette than 3.2MP and so on.... So what is the complain?
From other posts in this forum I have learned that too many megapixels actually degrade image quality.

I'm glad they are looking to improve the camera. I just have trouble getting excited about a camera with next to nothing focal length and the lens diameter of a pencil.;)

Cameras matter to a lot of people; I had a colleague who was looking at the 1st gen iPhone when it came out but didn't buy it due to the camera and lack of video.

I was disappointed by the lack up a camera uprgade when the 3G was announced, so here's hoping.

I don't know but the iphone camera looks pretty good to me, and it's the best camera on a phone I've ever had. Maybe it's because I haven't tried these 12 megapixel cameraphones.

My wifes phone (HTC TYTN II) has a 3.2 mpx camera, when taking the same picture in the same quality of light her pictures are always more grainy than my pictures with my iphone.
I personally love taking pictures with my iphone.I have been able to take some awesome photos of my newborn son while out and about. I do agree about a better lens (Carl Zeiss) would be suffice.
Some people opinions about cell phone taking pictures amazes me. I dont know how many times I have been in a situation where the iPhone has saved the day for that special moment.Even if the colors (To some) seem faded or washed out, there are several programs for fixing the errors of a cameras mistakes.

That being said, I welcome either 3.2/5 (And I know that the MPX does not matter ) We all should know that if a higher MPX is produced then apple will put a lens to make sure the pictures are not grainy.
I will however raise some eyebrows about Apple making new applications(Not the recorder that was demoed for the 3.0 release) for this phone. Doing a little manipulation and charm brought out a few slips today speaking with someone who works for Apple. It was said that there will be an instant messaging application alongside a few other applications that I could not get out of this person.
But hey, take it like a grain of salt.Only time will tell what is reality and what is

Not quite...
Technology is improving and in this case we are talking about jumping from 2 to 3 or 5 Megapixel. It is more likely to improve detail than increase the noise.
Of course this all provided that Apple tunes the camera right(and they will seeing how well they did with 2megapixel)

I had the same model camera and it came with a remote control. That camera took some awesome pictures!!

Sitting and re-reading this thread. I think most if not all have forgotten that Apple has only been in the smartphone market for 2 years and within 2 years the camera that is in the current models take better pictures than most 2MPX camera phones that I have seen thus far. We should at least give Apple credit for the current 2MPX. Apple's current track record has only gotten better when making products.

Yes that was one of the best digital cameras i ever used. The photos always came out sharp and detailed and the colours on it were always superior to the camera which i bought to replace it (panasonic fx-01 - 6megapixel) much to my annoyance. :p Even now looking back through my iPhoto library, i can tell which pics were took on the lesser canon as they still look much better to me, despite the lower megapixel count.

Ah, the ever-mysterious 'second product' rears its head again

Whatever could it be I wonder... could it be.... SATAN??? (I mean, a Mac Tablet.)

That is so true. Remember the first iPod ....

But Apple is also in a totaly new marketplace and they need to step it up the R&D faster with the iPhone then they did with iPods ..

When Apple ads a front side cam to the iPhone the most exiting things will shorly be the Apps that can access the front-side camera .

I think it would be highly possible with games that interact with the front-side cam .. like Sony PlayStation EyeToy ...

Depending on how fast the next gen iPhone will be with OpenCL - Acceleration it could be possible that iphone could do realtime face-tracking ... sholry many people would think thats useless but I think outhervise ... some pritty darn cool games could rise from such features ..

but first first .. I think there will be a Video-Chat iPhone and iChat for Windows ...

Remember when Phil and Steve showed of the first MacBook with iSight and Phil Shiller took a spin in the audience .. "Look the world does spin around me" - or something like that I think Phil schiller said ...

hmm

well two cameras in one phone seems pointless to me. a camera on the front face makes sense for chatting but not for taking pictures. i think we have to look into how many people would actually video chat with their phone. its sound like great fun, but its not a need. I would rather have one good camera that can take good quality pictures.

Also, my old sony erricson 810 had an awesome camera in it - and that was only 2.0 M. gave me nice quality 8x10 prints and even some photos i used for 3D rendering work and backgrounds. I dont see any reason why apple cant get this right.

As far as the tablet thing goes, yeah - it would need a camera, but really only for chatting no?

and why are we insistent on trying to pack everything into one device still? are we trying to de-evolve one of our arms off or something? Does anyone have one of those multi-function printers? slow crappy prints, horribly bad scans, and missed or unreadable faxes? yes - it sounded cool when you bought it...

I think, there is a very good chance the iPhone has 3.2 camera and the 2009 iPod touch model to be released later this year will have a 5 megapixel camera.
It makes sense in so many regards!!

I was hoping for a 5 megapixel camera in the next iPhone revision. I think a lot of people will be disappointed with 3. Having said that, I won't be particularly fussed.

Please don't tell me that you think that "more megapixels = better pictures!"....
