I'm just hoping that apple is messing with us. And it is strange that the 4S icon doesn't show the iOS 5 apps. Looks like a placeholder to me.

It's not about being a mom, it is about the changing media landscape and not wanting to run full force towards every new gadget out there. I'm a 27-year-old teacher. I do find it saddening to see a train full of people with their eyes glued to smart phone screens, kids playing video games and texting in class, husband and wife both thumbing away in a coffee shop, my dad in a dark room on the other side of the house on christmas eve and so on. Call me nostalgic, but I miss passing notes in school and whether you think that is a positive or negative change, smart phones are changing the most basic elements of our lives--from our culture to patterns of thought--in ways that we can't predict or stop; that doesn't mean we should just go on uncritically accepting or even celebrating every new change. Society hasn't even had time to adjust enough to develop a new etiquete around media-rich devices and if you think that nobody has a problem with this or finds them obnoxious you are wrong.

Look, I'm going to get one. I've had an android phone for a full contract period. I'm sick of it and I want more and better-the iphone. I've had iphone news alerts set on google and on my phone's pulse reader for over a year. I appreciate the elegance, the fact that they just work, the fact that they can replace so many other gadgets at honestly a fraction of the cost. That doesn't mean I want to turn my life or my wallet or my increasingly divided attention over to my phone.

I definitely understand the logic in this. I especially agree with the first paragraph. Tech is great but it definitely has it's time and place in our lives... or it should. It's hard to imagine the perspective of younger people who haven't experienced a day without smartphones, notebooks, etc. It's a bit overwhelming to contemplate the changes that have gone on over the past 30 years or so.

I can see where this is coming from as well, and overwhelming isn't the word here.. it's more of a societal and cultural issue here. The younger people who haven't seen a day without smartphones are starting to lack the skills for real HUMAN interaction. It's sad when you walk through a mall or to a coffee shop, and you see two young people (read: 20 and under.. I'm 37) sitting next to eachother, having a conversation through texting, instead of lifting up their heads, turning to eachother, and TALKING. It's the mindset of 'let the smartphone do it for you' that is troublesome.

My next door neighbour came over and asked me if their kid's phone bill was 'normal'. In a month's time, around 240 minutes were used, while they had over 6000 text messages sent to people they see multiple times every day. For people with voices and a language to verbally communicate with, that's a bit troublesome. On the other hand, it is absolutely hilarious when watching those same young kids, for one reason or another, having to go without it. They don't know what to do!

Tech does have its place in life. It has since the first networked connection in the late 60s. But it also doesn't have to RUN our lives, as the kids nowadays are making it to be. And those that call that mindset old or make you think they are your parents (you know who I'm talking about) are just blissfully, naively unaware that too much Tech is not a good thing.

BL.

macrumors is the only original source claiming that the iPhone4S was in the latest iTunes beta update.

TUAW refutes this claim.

Update 2: A different website is claiming that only the iPhone 4s will be announced, based on strings that were allegedly found in a pre-release beta of iTunes. A source close to TUAW revealed that no such text strings were found in any of the recent beta releases of iTunes.

can someone get to the bottom of this ?

Or we could just all wait until Tues...

To be fair this speculation and debate is more interesting and fun then the gizmodogate w the iPhone 4.

Who cares about the 8mp marketing scheme if the lense is crap ... And the a5 isnt that much of an improvement cosindering devs will make sure the iphone 4 will run their apps just fine and as long as the 3GS is still supported i dont see a need to update my iPhone 4 to another "4" unless i get a redesign or at least bigger screen. U dont buy the same shoes twice either just bc they come in a new color, do u

Re: Shoes.... why yes I do. When you find a great pair of shoes you tend to stick with them if you can. Bad analogy.

I'm not one to jump to any conclusions until we see what's announced on Tuesday. And besides... seems every freak'n launch Apple has there's a core group on this site that yells "FAIL" and yet, it's a "BIG WIN". Start calling "fail" with the iPhone is no longer the single best selling smart phone on the planet.

I guess we'll all know for sure soon.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that the iPhone 4S will be announced on Tuesday, with availability in 10 days. In addition, I think that the iPhone 5 will also be announced, with availability in 3 months. Apple will hope that the momentum from the 4S refresh will carry it through the holiday season, with the new phone to boost traditionally slow January sales. Both phones will sport the A5, with the 4S retaining the current camera and screen and the iPhone 5 being upgraded to an 8 MP camera with improved optics, as well as possibly a larger screen. Both will be significant upgrades, being the only phones able to take advantage of all of the new features in iOS 5, so announcing the iPhone 5 shouldn't take too much away from sales of the 4S, which will be much more competitively priced and have nearly the same capabilities. The iPhone 5 will be for those who are willing to pay the price for higher specs and the very latest/coolest design, and who have the patience to wait for it.

does anyone else think that the "iPhone 5" text we're seeing in retail inventory is just there because they didn't know what to call it? and that the "iPhone 5" cases could just be for updated iPod Touches?

Yes. Retailers and providers are guessing what might happen like all of us.

8MP is meaningless. Ask yourself why the 5 year old DSLR with a 6MP sensor produces images that are FAR AND AWAY better than anything a call phone with a 8MP sensor can capture.

It's about OPTICS, not sensor MP. I hope Apple nukes the whole idea of measuring camera by MP. Stress the improved sensor and improved lens design, NOT MP. Let the crapdoid makers fight over retarded MP like Intel did back in the day trying to push Netburst to 3.4 GHz.

What about the CEO of China's major carrier referring to the next iPhone specifically as the iPhone 5?

1). 3G to 3Gs
2). Iphone 4 to Iphone 4s...

...simple...

What major upgrade happened to the 3g to 3gs? Answer...

Same upgrade that will happened to the iPhone 4s. :apple:

Agreed.

October 5 = iPhone 5

October 4 = iPhone 4

I'm sure many folks have already mentioned this. But dates are important to Apple which is why there will only be a new 4 (I think).

Its just a distraction from the real iphone. Apple would just "accidentally" place this beta up for the world to see.

Why the fuss?
They will supersede the 3GS with 4S and also offer a new 5.

There is no way they'll keep the clunky 3GS going.

If they just release the 4S then apple have snatched defeat from the jaws of Victory but come on people we are talking about apple here so don't fret!!
