Well, I guess some people on this board still feel they have something other to contribute than wild speculations

I just think some people are delusional sometimes. I'm not trying to be insulting or anything, as I'm sure the folks who deeply believe there will be an iPhone 5 (despite all credible evidence mounting against it) are very smart people. But when it comes to their hopes for Apple to do the "right thing" (that is, the thing they believe is right for Apple), they can't seem to grasp that sometimes things are exactly as they appear to be.

For those saying there's just no way Apple would release a 4S after this long delay since the 4 came out, remember that there was a long period of time between the release of the AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4. This extra wait makes it so that Verizon customers can't really feel cheated if they took the plunge and bought an iPhone 4. To release the 4S in June/July would have angered a lot of Verizon iPhone fans. That's the true reason for the delay, not some redesigned iPhone model.

I'm calling my shot:

iPhone 3GS = $199 PrePaid

iPhone 4S = 8GB, A4, 5MP camera, HSPA+ 4G/CDMA 3G World Phone (the S stands for HSPA+ speed), same design as iPhone 4 because it is an iPhone 4 but it's a universal iPhone 4 for both networks and tweaked internals for cost reduction purposes (think PS3 to PS3 Slim). $49 with new 2 year contract.

iPhone 5 = 16 or 32 GB, A5, 8MP camera, HSPA+ 4G/CDMA 3G World Phone, 4" screen, thinner, looks like the mockups. $199 for 16 GB or $299 for 32 GB with new 2 year contract.

Have you committed your life for Macrumors? You know, this is just a Smartphone getting release in 2 days. Why so serious? Just enjoy the rumors. See what others have to say. Reply and that's it. No betting, mate.

Well, I figured all the people who said they were "positive" or "100% sure" would back that up with something.

Even if they don't want to bet their profile til the end of time, maybe a two week leave would be enough?

Is there any way to find out how the 3GS did in sales compared to the other phones? If it did significantly lower than the iPhone 1, 3G, and 4 then I doubt they would use 'S' again in their names unless they have an iPhone 5 ready to be announced as well.

It would be nice to see the stock for Apple tomorrow. I'd like to see the reaction from this slip up.

Sales figures dont matter for this discussion.

All that matters is the answer to THIS question:

WHY WOULD APPLE CALL IT THE IPHONE 4S WHEN THEY CAN CALL IT THE IPHONE 5?

As businessmen why would they call it the "iPhone minor upgrade" when they don't have to?

Because it is not a redesign but an upgrade to an existing design.

this is my take on this whole iPhone 4s/5 matter
Apple may release the iPhone 4S as an entry level device that unifies the GSM and CDMA version (one device, dual mode, allowing both AT&T and Verizon to sell that device and reducing the confusion of having two different models, while at the same time, introduce an iPhone 5 as their new flagship model.
Okay lets run out the 'Speculated specs' for both Phones, shall we:
iPhone 4S
A5 Dual-Core Processor
1GB RAM
Assistant-feature
8MP Camera
3.5" IPS Retina display with 960*640 Resolution
iPhone 5
A5 Dual-Core Processor
1GB RAM
Assistant-feature
8MP Camera
4.0" IPS Retina display?? with 960*640 Resolution??
Now, the only difference I can tell is the 'Speculated Screen size' of these two phones. Will Apple be ready for fragmentation because of just 0.5" screen difference. How would it go on in the market? Does this sound Apple to you or to anyone? Not to me.

the 4" resolution will probably be the same as the iphone 4. unless someone made a 4" screen with ipad resolution

Because it is not a redesign but an upgrade to an existing design.

It's still the 5th generation. A business wants to make their new product as appealing as possible and marketing it as a small upgrade when they can just as easily market it as a big upgrade makes zero sense.

the 3GS had a warranted speed increase to upgrade, most didn't though because it didn't make sense considering their contract commitments..

but the iPhone 4 is already fast enough for 95% of the market, it's only held back by 3G, otherwise, really how much more powerful or faster does the phone need to be for the majority of consumers today? the bottleneck right now is wireless data speed.. the iPhone 4 is already capable of providing crystal clear video conferencing with its hardware and optics, its only our internet speeds holding it back.

I completely agree if Apple announce a 4S this Tuesday, it will be anti-climactic.. my contract is finishing soon, and i've actually appreciated the delay, as i've been on a 18 month contract, so it won't be a big deal buying off the rest of mine, or getting a new one etc.. but a speed bump and better camera seriously isn't a huge incentive.

I think the iPhone 4 design is amazing, but it can be improved, everything can be improved, except possibly most mammal egg... but the fact is, Apple will have a drop in share value if they don't announce a new design.. everyone's expecting one, even my parents, it's become part of the lexicon of modern life.. new year, new iphone.. but it's certainly not going to harm Apple in the long run.

I know for the majority of non-iphone owners, the main issue is price.. the iPhone 4S can come out and be a cheaper alternative to attract these Android guys.. but to completely drop down the price line of the iPhone makes no sense considering the demand and desirability they have in the marketplace, they will simply HAVE to announce something new and keep it at a fairly premium price point.

1) iPhone 4S is announced, and nothing else.. it will tarnish Apple for the short term.. but the phone will be current to most of its competitors, in that it offers 4G, better camera, and iPad 2 performance. Apple Fanboys (including myself) will be peeved.

2) they announce a 4S, that is a good $100-200 cheaper than the 5 they also announce.. Apple will completely own the smartphone market.. end of story...

Apple wins either way.. that's the sad part of it.. the competition sucks so much, that Apple doesn't need to really bother anymore. (as ironic a statement as any fanboy can make)

Stop the nonsense. Just answer the question. If given the chance why would Apple name the phone "iPhone minor upgrade" if they don't have to, what would they gain? Why would they want to give the impression of a minor upgrade if they didn't have to?

Forget every single other argument for one second and answer that.

They gain NOTHING calling it the 4S if they CAN call it the iPhone 5.

Your a business man and you can name ot ANYTHING. Why wouldn't you want to give the impression of a bigger upgrade?

Because it is using the iPhone 4 form factor/case. Would be silly to call it an iPhone 5 when it is a souled up iPhone 4.

Aw c'mon, live a little! It just adds some flavor to a boring back and forth discussion where everyone spends their time wishing for what this thing will look like when none of us really knows for sure.

It's fun!

Your right lol maybe I'm a downer on this iPhone news. I really want a redesign, but am buying whatever comes out either way.

WTF!!! As a android user I was really hoping for a larger screen; that's all I really want from Apple. Even if it's dual core I just don't see many apps taking advantage in the next few months because there's so many single core users out there the developers will have no reason to switch up (unless your heavy into games). All I hear is how fast iphone 4 is already your not really going to see a difference unless programs are rewritten. And that speech recognition is just crap. I'm surrounded by people everyday and I would look stupid taking into the phone like a walkie talkie.

Apple waited this long to release a 4S version that will go for another year with no redesign? You better prove me wrong Apple or I will sue you for the vacation day I'm taking next Tuesday.

All right guys this is the news that ends speculation about iPhone 5
Gizmodo have released pictures of leaked iPhone 4 codenamed N90A, the cheaper iPhone 4. This news ends all the speculation about 5 being another as this will make 3 iPhones which is not happening. Bad news but still news.:(

This.

Why in the blue hell would Apple name it 4S when 5 sounds like a much bigger upgrade.

At minimum, 4S might be the internal name for it, but there's no way Apple would market it under anything other than iPhone 5.

If you're a consumer who wants the latest and greatest, would you rather buy something named "iPhone 5" or "iPhone 4S?"

It's a no-brainer.

4S has to be the name of the less expensive iPhone 4, designed with a World Mode chip in mind for economies of scale purposes (makes more sense to sell one world iPhone 4 instead of separate CDMA and GSM iPhone 4's). It just has to.

This is just a theory, but it could be called 4S because the 4S has an HSPA+ chip in it for 4G (keep in mind: even the $29.99 Impulse 4G phone has 4G...and the Sony Xperia PLAY 4G has a 1GHz processor at $49.99), while iPhone 5 has not only HSPA+ but also the A5 and a new design.

Hell...an 8GB HSPA+ iPhone 4S (with everything else internally the same) for $49 could dominate the mid-level smartphone market even more than the iPhone 3GS currently does because of being 4G (at least for AT&T...and it still opens up domination in the mid-level smartphone market for Verizon and Sprint, even without being 4G capable).

Why not name it the iPhone 9000 then? That sounds amazing.

A huge company isn't going to tell the world that this is a minor upgrade iPhone 4.5 because it has the same external features as the iPhone 4.

They have NOTHING to gain in doing so but they do have something to lose in people not sa thing to upgrade to a tiny upgrade. They aren't going to apply negative connotations to the name if they don't have to.

Is there any sort of general consensus on the reputability of news stories from The Loop and AllThingsD in terms of Apple rumors? I remember reading a few places online that they were pretty reliable in terms of the Apple related rumors they leak, and after a quick check recently, I realized that neither of the sites and run with any of this 4S rumors. Which just strikes me as odd, since every other mobile blog is pretty much throwing up and iPhone 4 picture and saying "no redesign!"

Or maybe I'm just clinging to whatever feeble hope that Apple wow's me on Tuesday.

/face palm

Why would they intentionally tell the world "THIS IS A MIMOR UPGRADE" when they can just as easily tell everyone through the name alone that it is a big upgrade worthy of the iPhone 5 name.

If they tell people it isn't worthy of the iPhone 5 name they're telling them it isn't worth the upgrade.
