What the hell does this all mean?

We obviously knew there was an iPhone 4S...does this mean there isn't an iPhone 5?

This story again, proves that Apple is releasing two phones....http://www.slashgear.com/iphone-5-specs-leaked-by-cincinnati-bell-01184707/

What else will it take, haha.

Cinncinati bell has no idea how many new iPhone models are coming they are speculating like everyone else.

Interesting conversation I just had with my father, who was asking me about the new iPhone. He's thinking of getting my mom one, since her old Motorola flip on Verizon is dying and she want's a smartphone so she can put her coupons on it. After we stopped laughing about the coupons part, he starts getting excited about the 5 with the bigger screen and redesign. Keep in mind this man still thinks his iPod classic is the bee's knee's and he actually doesn't even have a cell phone. Upon me breaking the news that the recent rumors were saying it would look like the 4 most likely with some upgraded internals and cool new voice assistant features, he promptly said "Oh....Well tell me about those Droid's. The neighbors have one from HTC and Samsung and they looked really nice and they can't stop talking about them."

Despite what a lot of posters on here say, I think it DOES matter to customers if the phone looks different. I'm already seeing a good amount of iPhone 3G and 3GS user's switching and getting the HTC Inspire, Samsung Infuse and LG Thrill at work, mainly because they were either entranced by the screen size or they just got bored with the interface. Price was another factor. And for them it worked, mainly because they never bought the iPhone for the "user experience" or iTunes integration. They bought it cause they're friend had one and at the time, it was the best smartphone out there. Now...It's a lot closer than that, and I think that both platforms are great and have thier own pro's and con's.

The situation on the smartphone market isn't the same as the old 3G-->3GS days. Despite it's detractors here in the forums, it's clear that Android and Google came to play. They're pumping out some competitive phones, which to me has been born out by the amount of people walking into my store asking about the Galaxy S2 with old iPhone 3g's. I just don't believe Apple can get away with not changing the design. If it is true that they are pushing the refresh date to October, that would make it around 28 month's or so that we are looking at the same iPhone 4 design. Add to that, it does seem like we've been stuck with the same iPhone 4 design much longer than normal. Whether that was due to it leaking early or the launch of the Verizon iPhone later, I don't know. While it might be selling extremely well now, how is it going to look next May 2012 or so when it's going up against the Galaxy S3 or any other multitude of Android phones that are LTE capable and possibly Quad core are on the market with bigger HD display's?

If all we are getting is a 4S and not a redesigned 5....Then why not just do the spec update last summer....release iOS 5 (if that was in fact the cause of the delay) as a software update this fall, along with the Sprint iPhone...and milk the anticipation for a new iPhone redesign (with LTE?) in the summer of 2012? That way you wouldn't have had this risk of a let-down and cries of "What were you doing for 16 months?!?!?"

It just doesn't make sense, and as a current Android user who was/is excited at the prospect of jumping over and experimenting with a new platform, it just makes me want to get an Android with LTE and revisit the idea when the 5 comes out. Why switch to a phone that essentially looks the same as it did in June of 2010 and is just now getting some features (Cloud backup, Voice to Text commands, Drop down notifications) that I've been enjoying in some respects since the G1? Yes it might not have been as fluid or handsome as Apple implemented it, but it worked quite well.

Here's hoping Apple surprises on the 4th and I'm still holding out for a surprise iPhone 5 announcement. I'm not predicting doom and gloom for the next iPhone at all, but I definitely think Apple might take some hits for it in the press and in general reviews for the phone. Fingers crossed over here for a redesign.

thing is ... apple will still sell millions of iphone 4 eses.

Wrong! They will sell 10's of millions. :p

Really people? How many "it's coming", nope... "it's not coming" stories have we seen? For goodness sake... it's all rumor until Tuesday afternoon! Relax and lets see.

Holy *****. I wish I had bought AppleCare for my iPhone 4's second year term...
from A4 -> A5 and if the RAM won't get upgraded to 1GB... it's gonna be much less differences than the transition from 3G to 3GS...
A5 processor is 2.5 times faster than A4. Assistant feature(may be exclusive to new iPhone) would need extra RAM so they will bump it to 1 GB.
An 8 MP Camera upgraded from 5 MP.
What in the world do you think this transition is small? Every aspect of iPhone gets bump, well, except the Screen. Other than that it is a reasonable upgrade.

iPhone 4/5

4 on the 4th for those in those time zones, and 5 for those in the early timezones like Australia/Fiji. :) S can morph into a 5 in terms of video graphics.

It will be a beautiful Wednesday the 5th for all on this side of the world.

I imagine a new touch wheel on screen to go retro iPod instead of pecking at names...the iPhone Classic with LARGER fonts to actually read, with swipe instead of pecking.

An iPod Touch 3G would be the killer device for the masses to bring iMessage and iCloud to all.

Would the Classic iPhone be called the 4C and have 64GB, and the IT3G with 128GB?

Tim is going intimate on campus, not wide, allowing the Verizon segment to savour their CDMA edition for at least 6 months, and tweaking the device increment to possibly 6 months.

Arn - iCloud on the 4th-10th, iOS5/iTunes 10.5 on the 10th/11th, 10.7.2/10.6.9 thereabouts, and new toys on the 14th/15th.

Check your bandwidth caps!

See you Til' Tuesday/Wednesday after a Manic Monday.

Except that 95% of phone owners don't know/care what processor and operating system there phones are running.

What would Apple gain from calling it the 4S instead of 5?

If they call it the 4S they not only lose the fluid generational naming scheme and the iOS 5 > A5 > iOS 5 thing they also tell people its a minor upgrade.

Any smart business will want to tell people its the biggest upgrade possible to drive sales.

They gain NOTHING from calling it the 4S and in fact could lose sales by giving the impression of a minor upgrade.

Calling it, whatever it may be even if it looks EXACTLY like the iPhone 4, an iPhone 5 HELPS them in that it at least gives the impression of a major upgrade... Not to mention the other benefits I mentioned in the second line.

The iPhone has never had a fluid generational naming scheme. That is what seems to be eluding some of you. You want apple to protect a naming scheme that never existed

Who cares? You ignore the most important thing. WHY? Why would Apple want to name it in a way to imply a small upgrade? It makes NO SENSE.

what's amazing is the pundits that say the (s) naming scheme sounds like the cheaper phone when most of them are the ones that upgraded from the 3G to the cheaper 3Gs iphone.

1. If the iphone 4s is comes out, wouldn't it be the 5th gen iphone? Why no go all like some say. Heck, name it the iPhone 5G!! Some have said that Apple from a marketing stand point should name it something big to capitalize on it.

2. If it is the iphone 4s with larger screen, A5 chip and voice assistant will you not get it because of the 4s moniker? Really, would you be so iritated and wait until there is an actual iphone 5 to buy? I'll wager some would... will.

3. If it's named iPhone 5 but carry the same design... wholly gracious, what next... "All these great features and OS in a repackaged form" was heard from the rafters.

Bottom line... On Tuesday most of us will have hand on the iPhone we have and the other holding our CC ready to buy the thing we don't want or got what we expected.

Again...If 3Gs from 3G didn't make it a cheaper iPhone then how in the hell does 4s from 4 makes it so? A cool commercial... and the words "the New Apple iPhone..." SOLD.

Doesn't Apple always release their new phones without any official advanced notice? I'm pretty sure it happens every year...

lol yeah are you serious? Apple wouldn't event announce the announcement if they could get everyone there within a couple hours. What a laughable comment. I guess Apple's way of putting out products is chaotic and unprofessional.

You do know they are releasing 2 versions.

The iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

The 4S is a lower model that most likely will be $99.

The 5 will be a higher model.

Here is a link that show a leak of both.

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/10/01/iphone-5-appears-temporarily-on-cincinnati-bell-website/

You do know apple has not provided Cincinnati bell any info like that and it is simply placeholder information placed there by an employee who knows as much as the average person in this thread.

Providers, retailers and everyone else will find out on Tuesday.

2 Phones quite possibly, but launching them this way with no real advanced notice would be super chaotic, and unprofessional. This will never happen

Unprofessional and chaotic, Apple? Did you follow the FCPX release by any chance? ;-)

If this is the truth, there is no way that apple is gonna roll out an all-new design. What's the point?

Al Gore never said that.

We don't know, based on the context of what he said whether or not he said "iPhones coming out this year" or "iPhone's coming out this year" As in "The iPhone is coming out this year"

If I say "My brother's coming over" i don't mean my two or more brothers I mean "My brother is"

It is far from proof.

Though I still think there are two models being released. I doubted it until I read this article but I would never believe Apple would alienate customers by calling this the 4S... They will only release a 4S if there is also a 5 coming out... If there is only one phone, even if it looks like the iPhone 4 it will be called the 5... So I think there are two models based on this article.

Again, this is why I give up. And I guess none of the other examples I gave prove anything either. I can't wait until Tuesday. And actuallyl Al Gore said exactly that, "new iphones in October".

----------

That isn't proof...

We don't know if that company actually HAS any info... We don't know if they are speculating or not... We don't know.

Without a valid source we don't have a leak.

Um, all of that data actually confirms what the Apple engineer told the New York Times, but I guess that doesn't matter. It could be conincidence, but probably not. You guys would make poor investigators, haha.

It didn't cross your mind the guy at cbell used the nyt info for his placeholder. Who is the bad investigator now scooby doo?

Here's an idea

Let's make things interesting. People on each side of this debate say they are absolutely sure they are right. So why not put a little weight behind your words? How? Bet your profile on it.

No matter which side you take, put your MacRumors profile on the line. Change your signature to reflect your feelings, and pledge to suspend your posting for a two week period if you are wrong, just like I did. Because I'm absolutely positive Apple will not be releasing an iPhone 5. All evidence points against it, and anyone saying otherwise is just engaging in wishful thinking.

So c'mon, do you have the courage of your convictions to put some weight behind your words? Or are you just spewing hot air?

What's the difference between the rumored 4s and 5? Just screen size, form factor.

Screen size - iPhone 4 is already the perfect size. I don't want to carry around an iPad in my pocket. 3.5 is the perfect size.

Form factor - iPhone 4 was years ahead of its time and is nearly perfect. The 5 mockups look sloppy. You don't trade in a smoking hot 10 girlfriend who is super cool just because you've been dating for 16 months and you want to try out some newer but uglier girls. Apple should stick with the 4 form factor.

Bottom line, rumored 4s is BETTER than rumored 5.

So you're saying reading these threads is a waste of time? LOL:D

I'm glad to see that someone understands. :D Why let them play you like a yo yo? The phone will be what it will be. If there are only minor changes it will still be the best selling phone in history. Apple knows their customers well.

I think many of the pundits are wrong.

The 4S takes the place of the iPhone 4 with dual-mode radio and faster processor (the S is for speed, right?). The iPhone4 becomes the cheap iPhone everyone is expecting. And yes, there will still be an iPhone 5 with the better camera, more memory, and maybe other hardware features that will top the iPhone 4S.

The problem is they can just make the iPhone 4 that cheap model like they did with the 3GS. It does not track that they would create a new phone to fill that gap when the current strategy has worked so well.

I think your logic is flawed by way of the 3GS. Apple could have called that model the iPhone 4 but saved that moniker for its successor. It's quite possible and logical that Apple would name the one and only next iPhone the 4S. Just like with the 3GS the "S" is for speed as the 4S will be capable of HSPA+ on GSM networks where the 4 is not. Perhaps it will have some tweaked speed advantage on the CDMA networks too.

Will there be an iPhone 5? Probably. But I'd hedge my bet it comes out in 2011.

Is there any way to find out how the 3GS did in sales compared to the other phones? If it did significantly lower than the iPhone 1, 3G, and 4 then I doubt they would use 'S' again in their names unless they have an iPhone 5 ready to be announced as well.

It would be nice to see the stock for Apple tomorrow. I'd like to see the reaction from this slip up.

The 3GS is the #2 selling smart phone in 2011. It has outsold the 3 and original by a lot at this point.

Have you committed your life for Macrumors? You know, this is just a Smartphone getting release in 2 days. Why so serious? Just enjoy the rumors. See what others have to say. Reply and that's it. No betting, mate.

this is my take on this whole iPhone 4s/5 matter
Apple may release the iPhone 4S as an entry level device that unifies the GSM and CDMA version (one device, dual mode, allowing both AT&T and Verizon to sell that device and reducing the confusion of having two different models, while at the same time, introduce an iPhone 5 as their new flagship model.
