For what it's worth I'll add my best guess.

I think/hope there'll be an iPhone 5 version as well as an 8GB iPhone 4 and 4S models.

Currently the 3GS has 2 memory size options. So Apple is taking away effectively on the low end and will likely (I hope ;) ) add at the high end.

This will give buyers more price brackets to pick from, which is surely exactly what Apple wants.

It may also potentialy open the door to Apple having a smaller iPhone and a larger one, and in time simply dropping the iPodTouch from the lineup.

I love how, even after Apple has confirmed the next iPhone will just be an iPhone 4S (plus the abundance of evidence for the iPhone 4S up until now), there are still people trying to rationalize that Apple will release a re-designed iPhone 5. I actually feel bad for these people, pinning all their hope on a cellphone.

I see a few people backing up a 4S release, based on Apple did this with the 3G to 3GS. That was very different.
1/ That was 2008 2009
2/ Most importantly when the 3GS came out they were still on IOS3. IOS4 came out with or around the iPhone 4, so it certainly does seem a good rooting point that iPhone 5 will come out with IOS5, yeah?

This is a rumor site.

I'll be happy either way, anyway. My iPhone 4, despite it's reception issue sometimes, is still more than enough to keep me going at least another year.

And the Apple logo makes a great mirror...I'd miss not having that.

I was watching wwdc 2009 when they released iphone 3gs to see how they exactly sold it to the people ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTU_RFBaCEg

so basically mr cook is going to say .. this is the most powerful fastest iphone yet .. dual core bladibla ....

it has the same revolutionary design we had with the iphone 4 just last summer but inside its totally new ....

and just like that .. millions of iphone4S will be sold ... dissapointed i am.

Ca Ching... spot on my friend.

This was sent from my iPhone 4s :D

lol if Apple waits this long only to unveil a slightly better iPhone 4.

I can't see too many people upgrading their 4's to a 4S. There's no doubt by now a 4S is official but we need a 5 to go along with iOS5.

Tim Cook's legacy is already on the line with this one.

I don't see how the situation is different much less "very" different.

As for the year I assume you are referring to Android/Win Phone 7 competition. But Apple has always behaved as if it exists in a vacuum when it comes to competition's feature set. They don't upgrade or add features just because a competitor has those features. Apple's M.O. is to mock competitor features until they appear on Apple h/w or s/w and then pronounce they waited to "do them right."

And for your iOS version# theory, it's not all that smooth since the iPhone 3G shipped with iOS 2. So there is history with the iPhone model# not matching the iOS version number.

I think it's highly likely that the 4S is the only new phone we'll see this year and that Apple is postponing an "all new" iPhone 5 until it's ready to sell an LTE phone next year.

You do realize that whatever phone is announced on Tues it will have been under the direction of Jobs not Cook. It takes more than a few months to plan a new or even tweaked phone release. This will have zero to do w/ Cook's legacy. Those products are barely in the idea pipeline right now.

Tim cook is the reason why there should be a big surprise on Tuesday. If his first iPhone intro is a dud, he will fail the company and investors' confidence. If he comes out with a iP5 with a big surprise to the public (by being able to keep iP5 under wraps), he'll score big and investors' and consumers will have more faith in him. Right now, people don't have a baseline of what to think of him as a CEO, a leader of the biggest tech firm in the world.

Latest CPU: A5
Latest IOS Version: IOS 5

Why do some people think that the new iphone will be called 4S? It is obvious that the new iPhone will be the iPhone 5! ;)

I admit I have not read this whole thread as, for some unfathomable reason, I missed logging in yesterday. That being said, one rumour mentioned a couple of months ago was that there were, to paraphrase, "design and manufacturing" delays with the iphone 5.

So, if I were to guess, they will announce both phones on Tuesday with the 4S being available in a couple of weeks and the iPhone 5 to be available Q1 2012.

That scenario is far from ideal for Apple or us but if the rumors of the above-mentioned problems were indeed correct they may be unwilling to make the phone available in a few weeks.

They would announce both as it would cause a firestorm with new purchasers of the 4S if suddenly the 5 became available without being announced at the same time as the 4S.

@Chupa: While that may be true, you have to take what e90 said into consideration. People all over the world are going to see Tim up there introducing the new phone, with all the hype and glory and if it gets a lukewarm reaction....It won't bode well for him and you know as well as I do how quickly people can turn their backs on someone.

I would already say there's people who don't know what to think of Tim right now so he needs to hit this one out of the park...even if it's not "his baby".

No, investors know Cook just came on as CEO and all the products in Apple's near term pipeline are not "his." His mark on Apple's products is a couple years away. His job right now is to market the current products with the same aplomb as Jobs did and convince the masses they need what Apple is selling. That is the only thing investors are looking for via earnings.

Sure but now your are talking personality and the power to sway. He could have the best phone in the world up there but if he is dry and boring it will be a dud. Plenty of great products failed because of poor marketing or spokespeople representing them.

Meanwhile you could have a product like the shuffle that isn't much technologically and someone like Steve Jobs could sell them by the truck load. But that has nothing to do with the product, but the person selling it. So iPhone 4S or iPhone5, it won't matter. Cook has to persuade people to buy either one. Products do not sell themselves, especially ones with thousand dollar contacts attached to them.

Look people, there will be 2 phones. 4s and 5. 4s is the cheap world phone apple can sell to china and india using prepaid plans and such. The 5 is highly gaurded and apple has gone through very thorough security measures in house and with foxconn to not have any leaks. In fact i beleive if there were any leaks of the 5 thru foxconn that apple told them they would move their manufacturing buisness elsehwhere and foxxcon took that seriously as apple is a extremely impotant client to them financiallly. So YES there will be a 5 with a5, ios 5 and larger screen. Apple wants to make a splash after what happened with the last iphone being unveiled by gizmodo! They want to do the unveiling!!

Alls I'm saying is Cook needs to keep the momentum and the ball rolling, and this conference coming up will go a long way towards that. If everything is good after the show, it'll make the Jobs-to-Cook transition seem like there's no fallout at all, and that's what you want, make it as seamless as possible.

you're wrong. it'll be associated with him. as for the delivery surprise, it'll be associated to him as well. it's all part of marketing.

I think it would make perfect business sense for Apple to release a 4S and a higher spec'd model too (iPhone 5). This would have the potential to take some business away from the cheaper end of the Android market (with the 4S) and also the iPhone 5 would then be able to compete with the high end Android handsets. Apple is really good with marketing, and this surely would be the best decision for them.

If Apple do just release the iPhone 4S, then I think this will be a BIG mistake, and I can see them losing a fair amount of customers, its going to piss off a lot of people (me included) if its just a 4S that gets released. My contract is up next month, and I do not fancy parting with some cash to get what is basically the same phone has I have now (iPhone 4) albeit with a higher MP camera and a bit more speed. I never thought I would say it, but I would seriously consider moving to a high end Android handset if its a 4S.

I think if Apple comes up with after 16 months a phone that is nearly the same has the iPhone 4, apart from a higher megapixel camera and a faster processor then this is one lazy upgrade. And too be honest I think Apple have a lot more sense than to just give a slight spec upgrade to the current iPhone 4.

There has been a lot of high spec'd Android phones that have come out since the iPhone 4, Galaxy S2 been one example. Surely Apple will have looked at the specs of their competitors before putting a new model into production.

I hope I'm proved correct, but Apple are not that stupid to just give a SLIGHT spec upgrade after 16 months.

2007 - #1 - iPhone
2008 - #2 - iPhone 3G
2009 - #3 - iPhone 3GS
2010 - #4 - iPhone 4
2011 - #5 - iPhone 4S
...
2012 - #6 - iPhone 6?

#6 will be the iPhone 4R - because it will have 4G... 4 Real this time.

Hmm... I think Apple "leaked" this on purpose. Shoot down expectations of a new phone, then come out of nowhere at the keynote with a radical new iPhone 5.

And the 4s is the cheap iPhone.

I'm sooo believing you.
And only 2 days left to see you was probably right.

If antennagate hadn’t happened and Apple hadn’t released a CDMA iPhone 4, next week Apple would announce the successor to the iPhone 4, the iPhone 5, and the iPhone 3GS would be discontinued and replace by the iPhone 4.

However, because antennagate did happen and Apple did release a CDMA iPhone 4, next week Apple will announce the successor to the iPhone 4, the iPhone 5, and the discontinuation of the iPhone 3GS, replaced by a revised iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 5 will be the next iPhone and the iPhone 4S will be a unified GSM and CDMA iPhone with an improved antenna design, possibly more.

I agree. Expectations are to high and chaotic, people don’t know what to expect, so Apple has leaked this to give people some idea of what to expect, only to blow them away.

I 100% agree.

There is a lot ridding on Tim Cook with this. If there is no iphone 5 the first thing investors and analyst will ask is "why was the release delayed if it's only a spec pump." Then the "Apple is not the same without Steve Jobs" will come out and the stock tanks.

Investors are already on edge due to Amazon's $200 tablet. A less then superior iphone will put Apple at risk of loosing more market share to competitors.

Unfortunately it never happens like that. Last minute rumors are usually accurate. Apple rarely blows away those who monitor the rumors closely. In fact they usually disappoint. :(

Why would Apple have a delay of several months just to introduce a phone with only slight revisions? To see how far they can push things with their customers?

My friend you said a mouthful and I agree with every single word. I sit in on a lot of meetings at my work and it used to be when I pulled out my iPhone, everyone went "oooooooo, iPhone eh?". Now, everyone else in the room has an Android HTC or Samsung 4-4.3" screen super phone and pulling out the iPhone is gotten a bit embarrassing. Everyone here may think the iPhone still drops golden nuggets in it's stool, but let me tell you the rest of the populous thinks differently. AND keeping the same design with the same small screen for what will amount to 28 months is either the height of stupidity or arrogance on Apple's part.

I passed on the 4 because it was behind the times 14 months ago. A new chip and camera is not gonna do it for a lot of people.

Now, honestly, a fella came into my office Friday with his new iPhone 4 and we both compared the screen to my old 3gs. Loaded a few websites to get a look at the 'retina' effect on small text. We could hardly tell the difference. Believe me, it ain't the selling point you folks think it is.

This guy has always been a die-hard Apple supporter and Jobs was always god to him, but he's not too happy with the iPhone 4 compared to what's on the marked these days. The screen's too small and he doesn't like the square shape. Even he's looking at Android now.

Apple is going to look damn pathetic if they try to shlep the same phone on the public again after 15 months. It ain't 2007 any more.

Both of you guys +100. I could not agree with you more. For all the reasons you guys mention, nothing other than a new redesigned phone makes sense. I don't think Apple is that arrogant. To allow Android to grab a larger market share? I don't think so. Without a new iPhone it will be said that Apple is in decline.
