Was at HD over the weekend .Pay doesn't work at regular checkout. Asked cashier she said people have been trying all day with no success. go figure

Hitting cancel on pin would run it as credit.

Sweet. I have to try this. I'm not too familiar with how debit transactions work as my wife got me to ditch credit cards for debit a few years ago. What's the difference on the banks end if I run a debit card as credit ?

I'll chime in with others that I used Apple Pay twice at Home Depot (both with a Citi Visa and an Amex) in Indianapolis over the last week. It seems that they're not "officially" supporting it because not all stores have compatible readers. It also seems that Home Depot is not part of MCX, so I don't see why they'd be doing an about-face on that.

Went to Home Depot today and attempted to use Apple Pay at the Self Checkout. The phone dectected it and as soon as I gave my fingerprint it declined the card.

I had just used Apple Pay at the Apple Store an hour earlier so not an issue on my end...

I guess YMMV for Home Depot.

I tried to use Apple Pay at the Howard Lane store in Austin, TX today. It declined my transaction twice, I had to swipe my credit card. I used the same card with Apple Pay at Panera Bread yesterday, it worked flawlessly.

Just used it at a HD that has brand new terminals with chip and pin support and no mention of NFC or the logo anyware on the screen or terminal. Just for kicks, I put my phone up to the screen and I saw the 4 green lights at the top of the terminal go across, and my phone said "done". These are brand new terminals that look to be in perfect condition, yet no mention of NFC anywhere on them or the screen, yet it worked. This was at the self checkout using Apple pay with a Bank of America debit card. I recommend you try it as it worked perfectly.

I went to Home Depot tonight to check this out at my location, and didn't see any NFC logos on the terminals so I assumed they didn't have it. Now I wonder after reading about these hidden NFC terminals. I know my Home Depot recently got new credit card readers, so I'd be willing to bet they can do it. But they had no logos or writing indicating it.

Same as mine, was it this terminal? http://www.ingenico.com/en/products/payment-terminals/signature-capture/isc-touch-250/

The difference is that when you run it as a credit card, the store pays the transaction fee. When you run it as debit, you usually end up paying the fee. Usually something like .50 per transaction. Either way, it should come out of your account like a debit.

In other words, always run it as a credit card when you can!

HD. not accepting ApplePay!! Fact.
Was there over the weekend was there there today was told HD is not accepting it. Remember why should HD accept a secure form of payment after they were hacked. That would be too smart

Really ? Weird cuz I never see the transaction fee

My guess is that Home Depot is supporting NFC, just hasn't rolled it out/enabled it everywhere yet. The terminals that people have reported and that I have seen have EMV slots, so they may be doing a slow, phased rollout to support EMV, but happened to include NFC as well -- just as it has been predicted that retailers would be doing.

This was probably why Apple Pay was introduced now - to take advantage of terminal refresh cycles to convince retailers to add NFC on at the same time.

We have to keep in mind that Apple Pay has only been know about publicly for a little over a month.. Even for Apple's "partners" such as Panera, work remains to be done, and they knew about it before it was announced. Retailers that had no idea about it (presumably Home Depot is included here) might have NFC as a coincidence. Presumably they are congratulating themselves on their good fortune.

It will take some time for retailers to decide that they want to adopt NFC and test, select, order, receive, and install the terminals. That's why I am not concerned when Apple Pay is knocked for "only" supporting "x" number of retailers/retail locations. That number will likely change dramatically (for the better) over the next 12 months as people refresh their terminal hardware, especially as the CVS backlash gets more and more mainstream press exposure. No one -- NO ONE -- wants to be in CVS' position today; especially someone recently stung by a major breach. I'd have to think that Home Depot is the happiest retailer in the world that Apple Pay exists AND that they aren't part of MCX.

Depending on which state you live in, merchants can pass the fee on to the consumer. Seems to me that most companies just pay the fee whether it is debit or credit. (I also have never noticed being charged any additional fee for using debit).

just payed with my phone yesterday at home Depot as long as they have an NFC enabled reader just try it out and it should work. does not have to be Apple pay.. ..and yes u have to select credit then go through the motion..

Here's an even better FACT. Home Depot has thousands of stores, so it is entirely possible that some stores do things differently than other stores. Rollouts of new equipment takes time. I know all the stores in my area started getting new terminals a few months ago.

If a store has a payment terminal that has NFC, unless they actively turn it off like the CurrentC retailers did, Apple Pay or Google Wallet should work just fine.

It's possible some banks are covering the fees, but also check the statement thoroughly to make sure they don't hide the fees in a separate area. You won't ever see it on a receipt. It happens in your bank statement.
