After tapping in with my watch and tapping out with my Phone (for the hell of it) I read on TFL that they advise you to use the same device for all transactions to avoid penalties and to ensure you get daily and weekly capping.

What does your journey history show?

Just bought lunch in my local shop with Apple Pay. This is will be my primary paying method. Me and my wife share only one card.

— Do you accept contactless?
— Yes (smiling, reaching for my card)
— I have this new thing... Apple Watch (I am double clicking and showing my little card)
— I never done this before (smile is gone)
Awkward pause ...
— Will I get receipt?
— Yes! Don't worry it's like a card, same technology
Entering numbers and giving me the terminal (finally!). I touched terminal with my Apple Watch, it worked instantly. Than we nervously wait for it to process (same wait time as we the card).
— It worked! (what a relief).

Specs: Santander personal account, iPhone 5, Apple Watch, US region App Store, Visa, iOS 8.4
What's your local shop?

Just a little thought for using Apple Pay on the tube with an Apple Watch...

The ticket barriers have the card reader on the right-hand side. More natural for the majority of the population, and not too awkward for the lefties among us. (Left-handed that is, not Guardian readers).

However, the vast majority of people wear a watch on the left wrist. Many lefties wear watches on the left wrist too.

So, imagine double-pressing the button on the watch to initiate Apple Pay. You've then got to reach over to the right-hand side with your left wrist whilst moving forward through the barrier.

The more bendy amongst us might attempt some kind of pirouette :)

Could be that a phone is actually more handy getting through station barriers...

(Not that I'd be able to test this theory... I'm waiting for Barclays to sort their lives out).

It all sounds good, regardless of issue or 2, but what about Australia...?
I know we might be insignificant in the "greater" world, but why does it take so long for Apple to implement Apple Pay globally...?

Tried to use it in Morrisons just now but both my cards within the Wallet app had switched to awaiting updates and wouldn't let me authenticate with touch id. So had to pay with normal card in the end. Needed to reboot my phone to get Apple Pay to work again, I'm on iOS 9 so may just be a bug.

The 'blue' ones are online only cards; so hopefully NatWest upgrade you to the purple 'offline' card!
That's odd. I use my blue one in shops all the time. But yeah, shouldn't be a problem. My wife had hers renewed recently and they sent her a purple one (that has contactless capabilities no less) so I'll pop into the bank later on and get them to upgrade me as well.

I just tried my Watch in Subway, didn't work.
Did you activate your card properly with text message on your iPhone? Was it error message or what? You need to double click on the favourites button on your Apple Watch and bring Watch screen to the scanner screen. Scanner needs to be prepared (there's should be contactless logo on the terminal screen).

As I understand it (Not being a tfl user and from reading other posts) your 'in" and 'out' swipes are paired up using the DAN, which is a code specific to each device. Using different devices for each action means they can't register you in and out, so you get charged the full fee. So basically, use either your phone or your watch, don't mix and match.

Apple has to negotiate with different banks in different countries as well as card providers in each region. Countries that have already have NFC will be less likely to need to implement Apple pay. In the UK are banks have been going through years of bad publicity, bringing out Apple pay makes banking easier and is a little bit of good news headlines which may help their reputation. This may have helped persuade the banks here to implement it.
Canada and Australia haven't had as hard of a time with their banks so there is not that much benefit of good publicity for them to gain. It will come to pretty much every developed country, but it will take time as negotiations will be tough.
They key in was country will be taking down either the biggest or one of the biggest banks, once Apple do that then the rest will fall in line.

Yeah Morrisons - Have also used in my local Co-op too
I think a lot of people are missing the bit on the Apple Pay page which says "Use Apple Pay in these locations and everywhere else contactless is accepted."

I think that it should be accepted anywhere where you would use a contactless card with the same restrictions. For those touting that they accept apple pay then they're likely to be the ones lifting the limits because they recognise Apple Pay as a separate payment method.

When using your iPhone do you have to place your thumb over the Touch ID on the TFL NFC reader? I get off a very busy train in the morning for work and having to place your thumb on the fingerprint sensor will really make or break it as oyster cards are extremely quick (less than a second) which is essential as there are hundreds of people all trying to get through the gate.
No, I think you can activate Touch ID while standing in the line and then just touch the terminal with your phone.

We've got a whole country using contactless debit cards and who already know there is a £20 limit, I imagine they will treat Apple Pay the same way.
Also these terminals are pretty ubiquitous now so I think Apple Pay usage (per head) in the U.K. will overtake the US pretty quick

Not really hard since very few stores here accept it yet. Still waiting for Trader Joes, Home Depot and Target to come online. The two biggest grocery chains here - Albertsons and Kroger are no where on the radar. And CVS is obviously still in their snit fit mode after their own system seems to have gone down in flames before it even launched.

So my One Account card with RBS still isn't working correctly as it just says to phone RBS to become activated.

I've just phoned them and apparently they are having technical issues with the One Account cards but they expect for it to be resolved by tomorrow PM.

FYI...

I warned about this situation weeks ago.

Each Apple device gets its own token account number in place of your real account number.

TfL uses the account number that it sees, to match touch-ins and touch-outs.

So using different Apple devices is like using different contactless cards, and you'll get charged the max for both, most likely. You'll need online to go apply for a refund.

Even that will probably be difficult, though, since Apple only allows users to see the last four digits of the token account number. AFAIK, there's no easy way to know and register the entire number, unless you get hold of an NFC reader or have a merchant friend who can look up a purchase record.

Thanks for that, I have a One Account too and I'm waiting for RBS to call back with an update. Tried to register this morning and was told they were waiting for a conference call. To be honest I was pleasantly surprised to see One Account supported at all since they haven't updated the web site for years.

when it finally becomes available, I just wonder how it will be received by merchants. Will they turn off their NFC readers like they do in the US or will the merchants embrace this? I still cant use my apple pay in enough places in the US, even though all my cards are enabled. Places with the readers that recognize Apple Pay and they say that they do not accept the payment. Very FRUSTRATING and totally shifting where I buy. Hopefully UK is smarter and better than the US when it comes to embracing this change.

In the UK contact-less is everywhere. We will have no problem with places to use it.
