well I just been on with Natwest and anyone with a blue card CANNOT use apple pay because it requires contactless cards. after a 11 min call I was told I'm eligible and new cards are in the post and once they arrive I will then be able to use apple pay :D

That's great but does anyone have any rough idea of how long the pre-authorisation stays valid on the phone. Are we talking 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds? I can't imagine ever needing more than 20 seconds but a 5 second limit might be a bit frantic on some occasions.

The Touch ID authorisation stays valid for 60 seconds, or until you quit the Passbook app or tap on a different card.

And the misinformation by UK media begins.

Knowing your purchase history allows companies like Apple to build up a profile of your habits. Not only can they use that data to target their own products at you, they can sell it to others to help them target you too (it’d be fascinating to know exactly what deal Apple has cut with Visa and Mastercard, and how much information the credit card companies are going to share with the tech giant).

Thanks for that, I have a One Account too and I'm waiting for RBS to call back with an update. Tried to register this morning and was told there were waiting for a conference call. To be honest I was pleasantly surprised to see One Account supported at all since they haven't updated the web site for years.

Yep - I'm really surprised as well :) Have you noticed that the website when you logon says the staff have been in training for years now :)

I'm really thinking of leaving the One Account as you can't even export your transactions etc. But I really like the fact my current account is my mortgage account.. So not sure who to move to..

With a 4" iPhone 5S, you can use ApplePay, if you have an Apple Watch.

I have no interest in that boondoogle, I'm afraid.

A question for current Apple Pay users: I see that transactions are listed under settings. Can one email or export a copy of this as a pdf? That would be very handy.

My thoughts on Apple Pay: it's fine. I'm not sure that it's worthwhile for Apple, as I don't see them making money off it. I haven't used it in a shop, and probably won't for years, but I probably will use it on an iPad.

Well first impressions are good.

I was certainly surprised that MBNA credit cards (both Amex and Visa) were registered on launch day as MBNA was not a launch partner, but shortly after I registered I got an email from them saying their support. Big thumbs up!

I use HSBC but as all my purchases go through Credit Cards I didn't care all that much.

So far I used it at:

Have used it at Pret (where it failed on first try)
Tfl (both buses and tube) - everything worked smoothly
And used it at a non Apple pay location with just a contactless machine. Worked flawlessly there too. The reaction I got from the lady at the cashier was priceless.

Haven't had the need to take out my wallet as of yet. I think UK is in a far better position to use Apple pay than the US as all infrastructure is there even with the limit most everyday purchases don't need to take out your wallet.

Even without a limit, there is still plenty of time until contactless is everywhere so a normal wallet will still be needed regardless.

Shocking performance from such a major bank. I'm hoping its just tech / server issues. What a disappointment, HSBC I'm going to switch banks today just to spite you for ruining Apple Pay launch day! :(:(:(:(:(:(
I don't think it's worth the hassle of switching banks. It's annoying and I'd rather they just said it was due to technical issues or something. Keeping customers in the dark is one sure fire way to erode loyalty!

I was tempted to use this to pay for my coffee and cake in M&S Cafe but there was a huge queue and I could imagine something going wrong. I did use my contactless card, which drew some looks from the older people in the queue.

I taped out with my phone, just to test that, and then my phone would not work in Birleys, so I am not sure whether I made a mistake. Time will tell.

I needed to open the app on my phone and also on my watch but doing so on the watch is easy as it is a double click on the contacts button and your default card opens and is ready to be tapped. If you are not carrying anything it's the easiest thing in the world. If you are carrying something it's a bit tricky and taking a credit card out of your top pocket might actually be easier as you can do with one hand. If it goes wrong on the underground and its rush hour you are also going to look a right idiot.

Yep.

The Apple Watch is worse for Apple Pay as you need two hands. Such a pointless device.

TfL uses the account number that it sees, to match touch-ins and touch-outs.

... Apple only allows users to see the last four digits of the token account number. AFAIK, there's no easy way to know and register the entire number, unless you get hold of an NFC reader or have a merchant friend who can look up a purchase record.

It turns out TfL do, apparently, have the ability to match DANs back to your PAN. If your PAN card is already registered in Oyster online then Apple Pay devices should automatically appear as different 'card records' in your Oyster account.

See: https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-paymen...of-contactless-payment/apple-pay?cid=applepay

They won't be combining journeys & touches made with different devices, however, as that would open up opportunities for fare evasion.

Not sure really. If it's just to get Apple pay a few weeks ahead of your own bank and you are otherwise happy with your bank then it's not worth it. If however your bank is a while away from getting it or aren't getting it then why not? Switching banks is a lot easier these days, it has to be complete within 5 days now and most banks offer to swap everything over for you as it is with your current bank.
Banking is all about access and protection of your money and finances, if the convience of Apple pay and/or the security of it is important to you then I don't see why it shouldn't be used as a reason to switch banks. Banks are there to work for us.

Tried using it at Boots today with my Santander card, came up transaction failed.

I got the same message in Boots, tried it it on my Apple Watch with both my Santander and Nationwide credit cards. Used it successfully in M&S, McDonalds and Costa though.

Ok, this might be interesting info. I live in Gibraltar and have managed to add my Gibraltar and UK cards and successfully used apple pay today at a contactless terminal using my apple watch which was awesome. I did have a fail at the local morrisons ( yes we have morrisons here) after attempting to use my watch and getting the tick and sound alert on my watch it didn't seem to go through and the cashier didn't get an approval so she ended up canceling. We tried twice and I ended up paying contactless with the card instead.

Switching banks is very easy now and nothing like it used to be. You just sign up to a new bank, select transfer account and in seven days they will transfer all SO's, DDs balance etc and then proxy all payments to/from the old account for a further 3 years.

I switched from HSBC this morning (after being with them over 25 years) in about 10 minutes and will be up and running on the new account well before HSBC pull their thumbs out of their asses and support Apple Pay.

I'm so sold on the concept of an offset mortgage that I don't think I'll change. I'm taking the fact that hardly any banks offer offset mortgages as evidence that they are great for customers, not so good for banks ;) I guess the reason for the 3 years of staff training is down to the same issue.

Going to call back to see if I can get an update on activation.

When using your iPhone do you have to place your thumb over the Touch ID on the TFL NFC reader? I get off a very busy train in the morning for work and having to place your thumb on the fingerprint sensor will really make or break it as oyster cards are extremely quick (less than a second) which is essential as there are hundreds of people all trying to get through the gate.

Indeed.

An Oyster card will always be quicker and easier than Apple Pay.

Quicker than easier than Apple Pay on an iPhone, yes.

But with the Apple Watch you get to skip the cumbersome "dig around in pockets/purse/wallet to find card" routine. There's something to be said for the convenience of having your payment method strapped to your wrist at all times.
