I’m so curious what the long term plan is for their movie / tv streaming.

Jobs plan was to hook people into the ecosystem so they would never leave as it’s too convenient or too much has been invested.
A streaming service you can take it or leave it. It’s definitely not a revenue generator - although I know services is their objective.

All of this content is same as what would be on any of the million other Tv channels already in existence.

There is nothing Apple-specific about this TV channel that would add any value. There is no security or safety value they can add.

So no shock that they cannot even give it away for free let alone to pay.

There is no “ecosystem” value for any consumer here. That’s the core problem.

They are wasting money. Nobody needs a TV channel baked into a phone - or even into a TV set top box. That’s why they are still handing it out for free. Nobody needs it and nobody wants it.

Tough luck if the ugly facts are uncomfortable to read.
In the early days of Netflix, they used streaming as a free service if you had the dvd subscription. They sank a lot of money into it. It took several years for them to make a single penny. Apple is in that state right now. They need years of spending billions. Then they will make money.

WASTE of money.
Just like APPLE buying BEATS Headphones.
now they are building their own. Shows that buying BEATS headphones was a Huge Waste of money
DR DRE got rich. thats all that counts.
The Apple Music service is basically what Beats streaming used to be. That is what Apple paid the money for. Not head phones.

Apple TV still has absolutely nothing I need. They extended my free promotion another 6 months and still have not streamed a single movie or show. More content, Tim.
I got an iPhone in November and still haven’t activated my trial because there’s nothing I want to watch.

I guess my definition of a "pitched battle" differs significantly from that of others !

$25M USD is a Drop in the Bucket to both AAPL & AMZN !

Now, if one were to say the winner bought the streaming rights to new Bond film for, say $500M USD, then I'd say, "now we're talking something significant."

Netfix entered the market to do a “Tesla” on DVD rentals. A transformation offrom renting discs to streaming.

That transformation is pretty done, a lot of content priofucrrs have their own streaming services, and COVID-19 stuck a fork in the movie theatre market.

Apple was too slow and the transformation is done. No new value to add. And certainly not at the higher prices they tack on to everything. Currently they can’t even get people to use it for free.

Nor does the hardware add anything.

Apple need to pack this in and go home

Higher prices? Apole TV+ is much cheaper than netflix.

And there is room in the market for more than one streaming service. Even back in the day when we got our streaming over rabbit ears we had multiple choices.

Apple’s value-added here is high content quality, easy integration with apple products (support for all hardware features, etc), and privacy (apple doesn’t care what you’re watching).

So they've taken the plot of a short film from a group of British writers and just swapped it from a deaf child and hearing famimly to hearing child and deaf family.

Wow, i'd have written that for a mere $24m

It’s funny because even the trades today are like “Apple paid HOW MUCH?”
Someone over on Variety went so far as to say “this will do to indie films what Bella Thorne did to OF.”

Apple bought beats for apple music, not for the headphones. And they’ve made their money back on the beats acquisition many times over.
Yes, but did Apple need to buy Beats to make that money? Apple couldn’t make its own music subsription service internally? Apple couldn’t build its own headphones?
it isn’t as though the music rights survived the change of ownership. They were spending $3b for coolness.

Season 1 of See isn't bad; the last Episode of it is still probably the single best thing on AppleTV+ so far !
See was laughably bad, both in concept and execution. The best thing to come out of ATV+ is For All Mankind (which actually got a second season, something See didn’t) and Ted Lasso.

Id rather see Apple use their resources to fix ****** bluetooth, monitor issues, and all the other bugs that have been left unfixed for far too long, than invest in movies/tv/etc. Yes, I'm aware that bluetooth may finally be fixed with 11.2 RC3 but there are other bugs (in many products) that should be fixed.

Apparently Apple could NOT make its own music subscription service internally, because they didn’t. Most likely, the issue was that Apple needed Beats’ relationships with the music publishers, because the music publishers were not willing to go along with Apple’s subscription plans before they purchased Beats.

You can speculate all you want, but your speculation cannot trump the undisputable fact that Apple Music is a rebranding of beats’ music service, and that Apple has profited exceptionally from that purchase.

Curious what you DO want to watch then instead?
Most quality oriented viewers would appreciate Defending Jacob, Ted Lasso, Mythic Quest and Tehran, to name but a few good titles.

Two other pieces of relevant news:
- Apple profits and bonuses are at all time high levels
-the majority of “Apple TV+ “ so-called “subscribers” are on “free trial subscriptions”, many of those extended after they declined to pay

In other words you and me and others who buy Apple devices are underwriting this gigantic throwing away of money on a triviality.

Sadly such plain speaking is glaringly absent from what purports to be a publication dedicated to enlightening the buyers of Apple’s products..,
What's your point? This is all common knowledge but the real question is why do you care what Apple does with their money? Even their shareholders are happy so I fail to see why anyone cares so much about the richest company in world spending money on content to support their hardware?

I really like this new service from Apple where they pay for movies and give them free for me and ad-less 🤣🤣🤣

The writing was on the wall, what does a computer company doing producing films and tv shows? They don't even want to license other's media. No one in their right mind will subscribe to this over HBO, Disney, Hulu,...(put name of decades old production company here).

This is a good step in the right direction. Apple TV+ is amazing. But the library is weak. Apple TV+ should release 24 NEW shows per year. Apple TV+ should release 24 movies per year with 10 being big box office films. Apple should continue to snag up these cheaper and indie movies to help build its library. If this can happen they'll eventually gain interest.

Are you nuts? Not even Disney releases 2 movies a month. 24 shows per year? Thats bigger than HBO library (exaggeration). I may missed it, but I think you are being sarcastic.

I'm sure someone has crunched the numbers, but I'm not convinced their curating is on the money, a lot of shows all appealing to the same narrow audience.

maybe its not about the money...maybe its about "brainwashing" the society with specific set of ideologies...eh? conspiracy time!

Personally I would like to see Apple pick up some good Anime and good K-dramas studios. Currently, Netflix or Viki are my go to for K-drama and Crunchyroll is my go to for Anime. Netflix is limited but with some decent shows. Amazon is just a nightmare to find anime that I like.

I have never found a single thing to watch on Apple TV. I have had my free subscription for 11 months. I have more than enough programming on Netflix. Despite delivery benefits I don't bother with Amazon Prime either. For me there is a room for a single TV subscription service.

Of course this varies from person to person, but I watched about 60-70% of AppleTV+ stuff so far and loved most of it. I recently killed my Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+ and YouTube Premium subscriptions and planning to just stick to AppleTV+ and Plex. I bet I can save a sizeable chunk of money over the course of 2021!
