To be fair, everyone who already owns a first-gen Apple Pencil should also have the female-female lightning adapter that ships with it, as well as a lightning cable, or can get both from Amazon if necessary. The only drawback is that it requires a charger and power outlet, as opposed to being able to charge directly from the iPad. And those buying a new first-gen Apple Pencil will get the dongle in the box.

We used to get people pulling out the Steve Jobs quote about "if you see a stylus..." every time the Pencil was mentioned, now everyone's up in arms that it needs an adapter.

I guess that's a win for the Pencil.

That adapter is for the USB-C to USB-C cable, but I can't imagine that USB-C to Lighting cable wouldn't work with the existing Pencil 1's adapter.

I love everything apple. I defended the iPhone 4 seams, I defended ping, I still defend the mouse charging, and defended the iPod sock.

This is supply chain constraints so I will still defend apple here.

Found some!
That’s a female USB-C to male lightning adapter, but you need a male USB-C to female lightning adapter.

Doesn’t the Apple Pencil 1st gen still come with an adapter for charging with a lighting cable? I agree this is not elegant situation but I think the internet has overblown this.

Basically Apple doesn't want to cannibalize iPad Air sales by allowing the compatibility with Pencil 2.
I’d maybe agree with that IF Apple hadn’t moved the camera. I think moving the camera messes with the charging (hence why the Pros don’t have landscape camera) and Apple hasn’t figured out how to solve for it yet.

Having said that if Apple couldn’t make this product for $329 then they should have waited to update until they could. Having this at $449 and the Air is confusing.

Don’t you need to plug the Pencil into the iPad to pair it?

I‘d check myself but my Pencil bricked itself because it lacks anything (like an off switch) to prevent the battery from totally discharging and destroying itself.

If you have an existing gen 1 Apple Pencil the only way to pair it to the new device is via the USB-C port so if you don’t have an adapter you can’t pair it. I assume though Amazon is full of adapters.

Me too. If you have a USB-C to Lighting cable you shouldn't need the new adapter to charge it from your USB-C iPad.
Yes, that was exactly my point. Except that I missed that you don’t need a charger if your lightning cable happens to be USB-C, you’re right in that.

But I thought everyone said charging directly from the iPad was dumb and bad design. I remember all the memes making fun of it.
It was... peculiar, but it worked by itself, as it handled charging and pairing.

Now you need a cable and an adapter for charging and pairing.

Yeah. If you own an iPhone that came with a USB-C/Lightning cable, you can charge your old Pencil 1 on the new iPad 10.

The way Apple implemented it was bad, with the Pencil sticking out at a fixed position, making it unwieldy and fragile, easy to break the male lightning connector on the Pencil. With a short cable in between it’s not a problem.

Good point, yes. But as someone pointed out, you can probably use a regular USB-C to (male) lightning adapter and can use your existing female-female adapter with that.

This is just a gigantic own goal on Apple's part.
This is the entry level iPad and we're talking about what is basically legacy support for the original pencil that never had a great charging experience in the first place.

This iPad is a very inexpensive device and you should expect some compromises. You can literally spend a few dollars more on the Air or the mini and have Pencil 2 support.

The new 10th-generation iPad features a USB-C port instead of Lightning, but the device remains compatible with the first-generation Apple Pencil only, meaning that an adapter is now required to pair and charge the Apple Pencil with the iPad.

The adapter is included in the box with the first-generation Apple Pencil, but for customers who already own an Apple Pencil, they must purchase the adapter separately for $9. While the new iPad is set to launch October 26, the adapter is already facing a 3-4 week shipping delay on Apple's online store in the U.S. for orders placed today.

The Apple Pencil plugs into one end of the adapter and a USB-C charging cable plugs into the other end of the adapter and the iPad. This setup looks quite humorous and led to the adapter becoming a meme on social media after the new iPad was announced.

Despite being redesigned with flat edges like other iPad models, the 10th-generation iPad is not compatible with the second-generation Apple Pencil, likely due to the device having a new landscape FaceTime camera occupying the area where the magnetic connector would normally be for charging the second-generation Apple Pencil.

So moronic if true. They obviously could have made room for the magnetic charger if that’s all that keeps it from being second gen pencil compatible. I suspect there may be more to it than that though.
