Why is this Pencil Pro working on the M2 Air and is not working on the M2 Pro? Its absurd.

Having 4 different Pencil models is also a convolluted mess.
Stop gap due to different charging methods (that came about due to the landscape camera). Once the base iPad and iPad Mini are updated (later this year?) the 1st and 2nd gen Apple Pencils will be quietly discontinued...

Does it have an "off" switch so that it doesn't drain the battery to zero and brick itself if you don't use it for a few months (which is what happened to my original Apple Pencil)?

The Pencil Pro looks good. In the presentation it was all about drawing and editing. They should've at least mentioned writing and inputing using Pencil Pro.

The new pencil is only going to work on the latest iPad Pro? :( That's too bad. I was hoping to get the upgraded pencil for a better writing experience....

“If we move the camera to landscape, we can advertise it more as a laptop and also make all existing users buy another pencil because the magnets are rearranged.” -some MBA apple exec in 2024
Or, alternatively, "If we put the magnet for the Pencil right in the middle, that will interfere with the eventual moving of the camera/Face ID to landscape, but that's actually a good thing because then we can then have a plausible excuse to make everyone buy another Apple Pencil when we have to adjust the magnet position." – some Apple exec back when the Apple Pencil 2 and associated iPad Pro were being designed.

You are probably right, it's still a really stupid and rude choice on their part. Did we really need the camera swapped that badly to force everyone who wants the new pencil to have to spend $1k+ to get it? No, but the shareholders certainly foamed at the mouth over that idea.
People on this site have been clamoring for a landscape camera for many years. Apple really can’t win.

Another question is: Does all Apple Pencil Pro features also work on iPad Air or not? Cannot find info. Like for example Apple Pencil 2nd Generation only hover works on Pro but not on Air.
Hover requires at least M2 (it can work on M1 but not well), so it now works on the M2 iPad Air. They didn’t mention any Pencil Pro features being exclusive to iPad Pro, nor does it say so in the Pencil feature list on the website, so it’s reasonable to assume all features are available on both the Pro and Air.

They still sell 4 different pencils? Can't they just have 2 and make the cheap one compatible with all ipads and the pro compatible with the last few versions?

Was about to buy one for my ipad mini but then saw that it only works with the new ipads announced today

Scam. It’s the same connector and interface lol but of course they software lock it so you buy the new ipad. shareholders suck, apple should be private

Honestly Apple can go screw themselves over locking out the new pencil to the new iPads. Such a gross way to try and force more sales of the new iPads.

The answer that everyone is looking for: no, Apple will not take your money today because Pencil Pro doesn’t work with your iPad. You’ll need to buy an all new iPad for that.

not on m2 ipad pro, but it is on ipad air m2, come on apple.

now there are 4 Apple Pencils in the Lineup now...

So the Pencil Pro isn’t compatible with previous iPads so now they’re selling 4 different Pencil models. Ridiculous.

Having 4 different Pencil models is also a convolluted mess.

So my M2 iPad Pro can’t use the new pencil but the M2 iPad Air can…..because magnets. Screw off!

The Pencil Pro not being compatible with older iPads has nothing to do with the chip, nor is it a scam. The video clearly shows Apple had to redesign the charging mechanism around the new landscape camera (something many many people have been asking for for a long long time). Considering these changes, it’s a rather big and unreasonable assumption to say that Apple could have found some way to make the Pencil Pro compatible with older iPads.

And Apple continues to sell older Pencils for now because many people still have older iPads and some need to replace their Pencils. It would be a major disservice to those customers for Apple to stop selling the only accessories compatible with their devices so soon.

Apple today introduced the Apple Pencil Pro with a new squeeze gesture, gyroscope, haptic feedback, Find My support, and more.

A new sensor in the Apple Pencil Pro allows users to squeeze the accessory to bring up a tool palette to quickly switch tools, line weights, and colors. In addition, a new gyroscope allows users to rotate the Apple Pencil Pro for precise control of shaped pen and brush tools.

Equipped with a new haptic engine, the Apple Pencil Pro provides a light tap when users squeeze, use double-tap, or snap to a Smart Shape.

Apple Pencil Pro is the first Apple Pencil with support for the Find My app, which helps users find the accessory if it is misplaced.

Apple Pencil Pro pairs, charges, and is stored on the side of the newly-announced iPad Pro and iPad Air models, which feature a new magnetic interface. It is not compatible with any other iPad models.

In the U.S., the Apple Pencil Pro is priced at $129. It is available to order starting today, and launches Wednesday, May 15.

I mean, I can't argue that all of these changes are improvements. But it all feels so incremental and pre-planned.

For example, how many of us already had the thought LONG ago that "Hey, this Apple pencil really should have been designed to magnetically stick to the back or side of my iPad somehow!" ?? To me, it's common sense from the very first days of using PDAs like the PalmPilot or a stylus on any older smartphone that the device includes some kind of storage slot or other means of keeping the two items together. Microsoft's Surface Pro stylus magnetically attaches to the side of it.

Bragging that Apple Pencil Pro now features this just feels almost ridiculous.

I sold off my iPad Pro and associated keyboard cover and pencil long ago (I owned Apple's very first version of it), and never bought an iPad again. I owned a few iPads before that too. But with the combo of my needs changing a bit and Apple raising prices on all things iPad, it stopped making any sense for me.

I'm starting to get into doing a little bit of work designing things for 3D printing and hear good things about Shapr3D on the iPad. So that rekindles my interest in getting one to some extent. But I look at all this "innovation" and kind of shake my head... Seriously, Apple? You think the pencil accessory needs to be locked down only to "Pro" vs standard iPads?

Has any hands-on tested how slippery the Pencil Pro is on the nano «texture» glass? Would be nice to finally use the iPad without PenTips and get closer to the writing flair of Remarkable2.

Does it have an "off" switch so that it doesn't drain the battery to zero and brick itself if you don't use it for a few months (which is what happened to my original Apple Pencil)?
And it's not like Apple couldn't do what everyone in the consumer electronics industry already does with things like my $30 electric shaver and put a set of 4 or so battery status LEDs on the Pencil, so if you hold something down on it, it displays the level of battery charge. Maybe we'll get that in Apple Pencil Pro Plus 5 for $200? Geez....

Not a big fan of locking customers out of the new item unless they purchase it with the new iPad. Great job, Tim Cook! Keep up that great work! Apple can't get rid of Tim soon enough.
