Lol absolutely laughable they’re splitting the pencil product line. No end to their idiocy and greed.

Pencil Pro 😂 what the hell.

Then artificially lock it to use on the new iPads only. On top of the not reducing the price of the 2nd gen pencil. Poor business ethics.
I think it makes sense. I have a Pencil for my iPad strictly for when I want precision, and for taking notes and signing documents. I'm not an artist.

My daughter, on the other hand, is a graphic artist.

I appreciate Apple not making me pay for features I don't need, while offering more.

One ring need NOT rule them all.

So the Pencil Pro isn’t compatible with previous iPads so now they’re selling 4 different Pencil models. Ridiculous.

Another way of looking at it is that this illustrates how iPads are long-term AND standalone devices.

I like having support for the device I own, and having options is always good.

Apple has split the iPad into three tiers, while still keeping the legacy, entry-level iPad around.

Why leave money on the table for a device that is still useful and you already did the R&D for, to the point of manufacture and shipping?

As I mentioned in a different thread, Apple has set it up for some of the newer generations to not touch a Mac at all.

Whelp, it'll be 4 of 5 years until I update my M2 iPad Pro. by then i'm sure theres gonna be a pencil pro ultra... this whole lineup is getting messier and messier.

I thought Apple was trying to be a 'green company'? why no backwards compatibility - i have to buy a new iPad (wasting more materials) to use a new pencil.
We're talking HARDWARE changes here, and not minor ones. The new iPad hardware is VERY different from the previous.

From car parts to video game hardware, there is so much you can do regarding backwards compatibility.

Be reasonable folks.

If they only produced one Apple Pencil you would be getting the Pro Pencil and all its features at a cheaper price than £129.

The new iPad has an OLED display and a new CPU. Hardly groundbreaking features that would warrant its price jump.

Apple simply has no vision of any product now. After the Apple Watch, Tim and the executive seems to have run out of ideas. I’m the biggest Apple fan among my friends, and now I couldn’t care less about Apple products except occasional iPhone upgrades.

I have to say, for people that already use an Apple Pencil the haptic feedback with gestures and squeezes are likely going to be a “retina” moment for them…

They forgot to mention the new iSqueeze feature in their presentation, where Apple magically squeezes your wallet by making sure that you also upgrade all your other devices if you want to use some of these new features.

Does it have an "off" switch so that it doesn't drain the battery to zero and brick itself if you don't use it for a few months (which is what happened to my original Apple Pencil)?
What I have to do with my 2nd gen Pencil is take the pencil off the iPad, and then toggle the Bluetooth off, and then back on to force the pencil to disconnect from the iPad. It won’t reconnect until it’s reattached, and it will hold a full charge for… ages. Hooked up after a month and it was still almost 100% charged, but not doing that and it would be dead in a few days.

Annoying yes but it is a workaround if you need it in the future.

Because a tiny toggle switch on the pencil would utterly and completely destroy the aesthetic of the pencil…

Blame Tim Cook. He started paying dividends after Steve Job’s died. Steve’s Jobs didn’t pay a penny to shareholders. Zero.
Yeah I tend to agree and was thinking that at the end of this event. Tim was a Compaq exec and made so much of Apple into what I hated about PC companies. I had the product line fragmentation it’s mostly just greedy and stupid not making the Pencils work across more devices. I would love to get the new Pencil but I’m not ready to part with my M1 iPad Pro yet.

On hearing the recent rumors about the Pencil Pro, many people were quick to comment that the Pro moniker will only serve to sell the Pencil for more money. But now that we know the Pro is going for the same price as the gen 2, there is no acknowledgement from them—except to condemn Apple for not reducing the price of the gen 2.
People never cease to amaze.

Is the double tap still there or does the squeeze merely replace it?

Also, Wacom has two simple function buttons and can be turned around to use as an eraser for years. Less high tech but in fact more efficient

The thing that makes it really annoying — the pencil of the Pro looks like the Pencil2. When my current iPP pencil gets switched up with the pencil of my mini, I just connect it and they work seamlessly with the other iPad. Not anymore. This might get sucky fast.

This demo is real impressive man, but Procreate is the next app to get Sherlocked I think.
Looking at what Apple has come out with in the last few years (Journal app, System Settings on macOS etc.) I'm not sure if they would still have the necessary software engineers to actually pull this off.

I find it hard to believe Apple couldn't have figured out a way to PUT the magnets in the same place.
The camera module prevents this. It was quite obvious that they needed a new magnet configuration to get around this when placing the camera on the horizontal plane. There's no way around this if they wanted to retain the same charging position.
