Baloney. It'll never happen. Too many people hate trackpads/balls.

I'm sure Apple's ultimate goal is no-hands mental manipulation of everything. But we're humans and use our hands. Phooey.

Jobs is loosing the plot!!!!!

Apples recent decisions (such as the removal of the drive from the Mac Mini) are really starting to grate on me now ... The day they get rid of the mouse to force me into using this pile of **** (great with COD4!!!!) is the day I go back to a PC. I switched to a mac many years ago for ease of use; but I'm more than happy to switch back once I feel I'm not getting the experience I WANT ... not what *********g Steve Jobs wants!

Hope Apple employees are reading this!!!!

I might seriously lose all faith in Apple if they do this. What on earth is wrong with the mouse as an input? I'm pretty sure this won't happen, but in the highly unlikely event that it does, I'll stay an uncool old-timer.

Until they make it so I can draw directly on the screen with my finger and a stylus (for pressure sensitivity and precision in graphic design), as a pro, I'm going to need to use a mouse (well, a mouse and tablet). Have you ever tried to use Photoshop with a trackpad? It's not very easy, especially for making precise selections.

I think this rumor is likely bunk. I love my Magic Mouse. I love the new gestures in Lion. I love using MagicPrefs to extend the functionality. It just seems odd that Apple would develop something so radical and useful and then kill it off. It's the best mouse they've ever made. It's the only one that I've ever liked! If it does get killed off, I'm seriously going to consider buying a couple spares from Amazon.

I hope they are just coming out with an updated version. Maybe they will unveil it at the same time as the new iPhone and iPods?

I still need Mice. Trackpad can't play games, amongst other things :p

I can't believe anyone would want to play games with the Magic Mouse. It is horrible because you can't use Mouse1 and Mouse2 at the same time, plus there is no other buttons.

Apple had not been that happy with mouses unfortunately.

The Mighty Mouse was awful. The cord version was light and easy to use, while the wireless version was too heavy and clumsy due to the batteries. The trackball was the WORST thing on earth. With so many people complaining about it and the problem is that, its mechanics inside just get dirty if you sweat in your fingers and then it stops working. I had to open the damn thing to clean it once every two weeks or less.

Along came the Magic Mouse. Up to Snow Leopard, it suffers from the same sluggish pointer movement, being fixed in Lion. However, as it still uses two AA batteries, it is way too heavy and clumsy, I still vote that they do need to make these with AAA batteries. Who cares if you need to change it more often? At least you can use the thing everyday without feeling you're dragging a stone around.

Then there is the multi-touch gestures on Magic Mouse. Although nice, there is a good learning curve from Snow Leopard to Lion. Before, double fingers to go back, now it just changes the desktops, bla bla bla. Further more you find that some options are not available for it. If we have two fingers left / right / click why can't we have two fingers up / down for LaunchPad and Desktop?

Finally, with the trackpad all those issues go away, you have full multi-touch options, rotate, zoom, all the fun stuff, without the clumsy mouse.

Granted, if Magic Mouse was lighter I think I would still keep it, but being so heavy with the batteries it kind of misses the point to me. My next iMac is definitely going to be with a trackpad.

yeah, but...

...if Apple were trying to encourage user migration to the Magic Trackpad, wouldn't the trackpads already be default equipment in the iMac and Mac Pro packages, rather than Magic Mice?

Seconded. That mouse was going strong for 8 years attached to my PowerMac 6100/60.

Though I must confess, the Mighty Mouse was damn comfortable.

I'll take an Apple Pro Mouse over the Mighty Mouse because at least the Pro Mouse doesn't taunt me with a non-functional scroll nipple.

I'd like to think they wouldn't do this, but some of the Lion features do seem to favor those who have multi-touch trackpads.

Mission control works fairly well with a trackpad, but sucks when you don't have one IMHO.

Right now I have a logitech trackball and a shuttle express for my input needs. I've been debating adding a trackpad to the collection (and have them placed in some kind of arc that I can swing my arm between.

I really don't like using trackpads for all my input needs (they are good when using a laptop on the road, but not my style for daily use).

My dream device would be a trackball with a thumb operated ball, a scroll ball like apple's wired mouse, and lots of extra buttons (maybe a scroll ring as well), and a touch surface for gestures. :)

But that's probably not likely to happen. :)

You can get the Magic Trackpad instead of the Magic Mouse for no extra charge (or both for extra).

And as far as games, both are pretty bad for games (as said above, you can't press both mouse buttons at the same time).

I find the gestures on the magic mouse very difficult to use efficiently. With that said, some users "need" or "want" to continue using a regular mouse... for example gamers.

Since I play games on my Mac, I have a need for a regular mouse... but the Magic Mouse isn't the answer. I have my Razer DeathAdder gaming mouse for games, and my the Trackpad on my MacBook Pro for regular use.

It's going to be a long time before Gamers can give me mouses completely, because Trackpads simply don't offer a viable solution yet.

I wish Apple would actually come out with a mouse that is ergonomic. I'm sorry but Apple has never come out with one good mouse in my book.

Now thats just not true ;)

I couldn't care less to be honest. I've always used Logitech mice and I probably always will.

So glad I moved back to PC, can use anything I want without weird tracking issues.

Really surprised at all the magic mouse lovers here... that product is/was a transitional one at best.

And for anyone with anything larger than midget hands the MM is just painful to use for any length of time; there are WAY better non-apple alternatives out there for mouse fiends.

In fact, Apple has never made a good mouse, the sooner they quit trying the better!

Magic Mouse = Carpal tunnel symptoms

As a designer I use 90% my wacom pen anyway. Magic Mouse is the sure way of getting carpal tunnel symptoms.

I can see including the trackpad as a default with the computers but most desktop apps are designed to use a mouse.

That said, I really enjoy the added control from gestures. I find myself using the launchpad quite a bit. If my hands are already on the keyboard I use Alfred but if I am using the trackpad I use Launchpad.
