And yet they cannot make a 17" rMBP.

The iPad pro is a fine concept, that is severely overpriced for what it is.....an iPad Air 3

we need at least 6 sizes...... and more variations of gold...

The 17" macbooks were beasts back in the day. However, they only catered to the minority, which in Apple's world isn't profitable unfortunately.

Almost as stupid as having 4 or more car types, or differing sizes/configurations of anything. Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave. Idiots at Apple don't know anything. /s

Why would Steve Jobs be rolling in his grave? Doubtful. Their are Multiple variations in the iPad line up, iPhone line up, Apple Watch, ect.

If this rumor pans out and Apple won't make a special arrangement with Microsoft (I don't see that coming), there's one thing consumers stand to lose and that is free Microsoft Office.

Why would Apple make their new iPad despite that (core editing is free for consumers on devices with screen sizes smaller than 10.1)? Or, perhaps they are going to make it because of that (more AppStore money on the back of MS Office sales)?!

Make the bezel footprint of the 9,7" smaller, ditching the home button, and include a bigger display while keeping the same device dimensions. I would buy this iPad in a heartbeat – don't want a too big 12,9", but the 9,7" display is just a tiny bit too small for comfortably reading a full DIN-A4 page of sheet music. (Althought it works for me.) And a bigger display can never hurt when watching movies etc.

I think the "cheap" 9.7" iPad and the 10.5" iPad Pro will probably be the same form factor, with the 10.5" using an OLED screen and having smaller bezels.

Also, I'd expect the iPhone 8 to grow in screen size over the 5.5 WITHOUT growing the size of the device. If you have a 6" iPhone, I don't know why you would want an iPad Mini.

Lastly, I think there is more to consider (or imagine) with regard to the "new form factor" he talks about. I've been wondering for some time when we are going to start seeing devices with folding screens. How about a 12.9" iPad Pro that folds in half like a laptop when I want to transport it, but when I fold it open, it becomes one big 12.9" screen. I've got to guess that is coming sometime in the next few years...

Why I see Apple is entering a path which those android tablet manufacturers go ages ago? Apple is fragementing their own product line? Where is "less fragmentation" of Apple ecosystem?
And given Apple has little to no experience balancing all of those configurations I am afraid things would only go from bad to worse.

Its a crazy idea though. The iPad Mini is still a popular iPad. Perhaps if it was frequently updated and was priced better it would sell better.

Kuo makes no reference to it perhaps because it won't get an update for a while.

It almost seems like Apple has so many products crowding its spectrum that it is afraid to update (m)any of them lest they cannibalize some other part of their product lineup. In effect everything ends up gimped to a certain amount to save some breathing room for another product right next to it.

And that takes 2 years? Why are they so behind the ball on technology? It goes to show what a bubble they are in... sad

Margins, and price point. It wouldn't surprise me if this is mid-development cycle. Plans will be finalized next year, with suppliers given 6-12 months to get infrastructure in place, for a late 2017 or mid 2018 release. Assuming suppliers can met Apple.

Basically, Apple is going to its suppliers with an offer of "Produce flexible OLED on a cheap, mass production scale, and we'll buy from you" but who right now is mass producing any of these components in the quantities Apple would buy?
