Sounds like a confusing product lineup Lol. All these different sized screens and variations of the same type of product.

I can’t wait for the event though.
"Confusing" as in product differences that would take a few minutes to figure out and offer consumers more choice? This forum really can't be satisfied.

When Apple were in trouble, one of the main factors was the huge range of products. They spread themselves too thinly. As you pointed out, Jobs came back reduced the number of products and focused on making each one awesome. I like Tim Cook but we don’t need so many different variations of the same product.
And we need the products to get awesome again. The new iPad maybe awesome but what’s the benefit of using the iPad pros at nearly MacBook Pro prices when they all use a phone iOS with very limited capabilities?

The current lineup isn't confusing at all.
  • 9.7-inch iPad: starts at $329 with 32GB, A10, Lightning, 1st generation Apple Pencil, Touch ID
  • 7.9-inch iPad mini 4: starts at $399 with 128GB, A8, Lightning, does not support Apple Pencil, Touch ID
  • 10.5-inch iPad Pro: starts at $649 with 64GB, A10X, Lightning, 1st generation Apple Pencil, Touch ID
  • 11-inch iPad Pro: starts at $799 with 64GB, A12X, USB-C, 2nd generation Apple Pencil, Face ID
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro: starts at $999 with 64GB, A12X USB-C, 2nd generation Apple Pencil, Face ID
How I would personally consolidate:
  • 7.9-inch iPad mini: starts at $329 with 64GB, A10X, Lighting, 2nd generation Apple Pencil, Touch ID
  • 10.5-inch iPad: starts at $399 with 64GB, A10X, Lightning, 2nd generation Apple Pencil, Touch ID
  • 11-inch iPad Pro: $100 price cut to $699 with 64GB
  • 12-9-inch iPad Pro: $100 price cut to $899 with 64GB

Adding even more confusement to the already confusing lineup

Focus Timmy, focus!

There are 2 regular iPad, mini and regular, 1 pro with Touch ID, and 2 Pro with Face ID, mini and regular. How is that complicated? 90% of users probably know if they want regular or pro by budget alone, so you really only need to pick one of two screen sizes, period.

I had to read your comment twice to understand :D

Wut.

Diluting the lineup even further?

I think it's unfair to say Tim Cook needs to run the company like Steve, but I think there is something to be said about what Steve did with the lineup when he came back:

Those are just four brands. There were always multiple models within each of the brands. I don't see the problem with offering multiple-size iPads under the iPad brand. Especially if size is the main differentiator. Confusion doesn't happen when you have progressive feature set graduations, like good/better/best or small/medium large.

I guess choice is a good thing but this is getting ridiculous. As many many have pointed out, this lineup needs to be pared down. I miss the days when it was just......iPad. Just one.

Are you confused? You, personally?

You’re saying there are more gaps to fill?

I said this exact same thing a week ago on another thread and got laughed out of the forum. Its such a simple concept I have no idea why they haven’t done this yet. Three different sized iPads each with a consumer and pro variant should easily achieve what they are trying to accomplish. There is really only three questions to answer when trying to decide what iPad to buy at that point.

Do I want regular or pro specs?
What size of screen do I want?
How much storage do I need?

It wouldn’t hurt for branding simplicity for them to drop the screen sizes from product name too.
Regular specs:
$329 9.7” (rumored to become 10.2”)
$399 7.9” mini

Pro specs:
$649 10.5 (rumored to become semi-pro)
$799 11
$999 12.9

Size: see above

I can see some room between $329 (maybe dropping to $299) and $799 for an “iPad Plus”. Maybe $499 and it loses some of the Pro features—don’t ask me which ones. But no rounded screen or FaceID. That’s the 11” Pro.

But why would Apple make six models with an OCD-based forced rigidity to the feature set, regardless of what the demand would be for each? That doesn’t accomplish what Apple wants; that accomplishes what you want.

It reminds me of people who want four or six iPhone models and think it would “simplify” the lineup... regular/Pro of two or three different sizes. No, having six different phones isn’t simpler than three. $749 LCD, $999 OLED, $1,099 OLED is not really that hard to figure out.

Wait, an ipad 7 (10.2) and an ipad10.5 ,non pro? Am I reading this
correctly?

I'd like to note that the likeliest differentiator between a 10.2" and 10.5" iPad would be whether the display is laminated to the digitizer. Otherwise consolidating on a common chassis would make sense. It would also maybe allow for the 10.5" laminated display to be a BTO upgrade; or an option only available on higher storage tiers.

“Throwing a wrench into rumors, the previously accurate Twitter account CoinX today claimed that Apple plans to release not only a 10.2-inch seventh-generation iPad, but also an entirely new 10.5-inch iPad without Pro branding. The tablets will not be released simultaneously, according to the tweet.”

Anyone else read that as without Pro bending?

Reminds me of the old days when there were so many Mac models that consumers couldn't tell the differences.
I remember those days, there were dozens of models, many with the same features but with different names. Even Apple couldn’t keep them straight.

Is it really that complicated?

Regular:
7.9” iPad mini
9.7” iPad (rumored to be updating to 10.2”)

Pro:
10.5 (rumored to become “semi-pro”)
11
12.9

They are probably going to replace the 10.5 Pro with a 10.5 regular, that has less powerful components but maintains the industrial design (smaller bezels, screen lamination maybe a bit thinner/lighter than the 9.7 regular). This way they can drop $100-$150 from the price of the current 10.5 Pro and reposition it. The Pro will stay as Face ID only, with the bezels-less design and Liquid LCD. Now that the Pro has a newer industrial design it makes sense than the previous pro design trickles down to the iPad regular.

This is all getting bit silly - I guess they could just price by length - say, $400 for the first 8 inches then $75 for each additional half inch... Any size you like!
