They won't be the same iPad though. You'll have the insanely affordable iPad as it exists today, and an iPad semi-pro with better display, better specs, etc. but without some of the high-end features and advanced technologies in the actual pro models. It makes sense to make more of the advanced Pro features available to those willing to pay a bit more for a better version of the cheapest iPad, but not willing to spend the full amount for the best-in-class iPad Pro.
That's how I'm thinking about it. Something akin to an "iPad R", that sits between the iPad 10.2" and iPad Pro 11", kind of like how the iPhone XR sits between the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone XS series.

it all went downhill when the 2nd iphone had "3" in its name.
Yeh, that's when much of the confusion started.
2nd gen iPhone being called iPhone 3G ..... most people thought 3G meant 3rd generation as opposed to 3G Network.
And here we are years later and Apple are still creating confusion.

I wonder if Apple will call their first 5G phone "iPhone 5G". Now that would really confuse some people. Heh hehh. :p

RE: "If accurate, Apple could perhaps be planning to release a slightly scaled back version of the existing 10.5-inch iPad Pro, which could allow it to fill a price point between the $329 lower-end iPad and the $799 and up 2018 iPad Pro models."

It's ALL-about generating as much Incremental Revenue as Possible now !

Next Up, a scaled-back version of the XS, to fill the void between nothing & the existing XS !

So is the 10.5 is going to be the iPad Pro Mini, iPad Special Edition or iPad Semi-Pro?

what exact model is this? there are so many ipad models out today that no common consumer has any idea of what is what and the minute differences. it's bad enough that retailers themselves had to name these units "generations" rather apple naming them ipad 1, ipad 2 and so on. and iphone 8 jumped to iphone x (10). where is 9?
Common consumers go to the Apple store and say I want an iPad and an Apple rep asks what they need it for and then explains the models. I don't know why people in this sub think names, generations, whatever need to matter to the general public. It only really matters to us enthusiasts.

They have to replace the 10.5 Pro with something else or you will get the situation where the 2019 non-pro iPad (and quite possibly the new Mini5) which cost <$350 will have A11 processors which smoke the A10X processor in the $650 10.5 Pro. The choice would be more powerful/supported for longer/smaller/cheaper vs larger/better screen/better speakers/2x price. If that doesn't consumers I don't know what would.

But they all have one thing in common: they won’t come cheap

I disagree there. The 9.7” iPad is the best current deal sold by Apple in recent memory, hands down. $329 is cheap, affordable, and that price tag is a winner.

The Naming Should be as follows, IMHO:

All new for 2019 -
• iPad Mini
• iPad
• iPad Pro
• iPad Pro +

Just like cars, you don't need a new name every freakin' year! Come on!

The size and price should be as others have said in this thread:

8" (Mini) starting @ $299
10.5" (iPad) starting @ $599
11" (iPad Pro) starting at $799
13" (iPad Pro+) starting @ $999

The 9.7" educational model should be made available through schools ONLY and purchased in bulk by the schools who require them for their curriculum @ $329 (plus the Apple Pencil).

Differences
Non-Pro have lower end hardware! Face ID should be standard on ALL devices (just use the older version of faceID for the lower line to reduce costs). ALL should have Apple Pencil support. AND, they should have a slot for the pencil to be housed inside the iPad to help people NOT lose the damn thing, along with Magic Mouse support!

"Confusing" as in product differences that would take a few minutes to figure out and offer consumers more choice? This forum really can't be satisfied.

I am satisfied. I’m not in the market for an iPad. I have the 2018 12.9”.

And yes consumers do get confused when there are a lot of options. Are options a bad thing? No.

Sounds like a confusing product lineup Lol. All these different sized screens and variations of the same type of product.

I can’t wait for the event though.

I think it makes perfect sense. Add some more space for the Mini by increasing the size of the baseline, then provide a lower end pro tablet as well

Wut.

Diluting the lineup even further?

I think it's unfair to say Tim Cook needs to run the company like Steve, but I think there is something to be said about what Steve did with the lineup when he came back:

this-is-the-super-simple-chart-steve-jobs-made-to-save-apple-from-extinction.jpg

I think about this all the time. Steve's product grid came along not long after the prior leadership had a large and confusing product lineup not all that different fro what we have now. What was great about Steve's approach was not only the clarity of thought, but the fact that this freed up Apple's design team to make each product exactly what that segment needed. An iMac/iBook wasn't inferior to the pro options; they were great in their own right but highly consumer-friendly.

Apple obviously is a bigger company now, and more models within any product segment might make sense. But each needs clarity of purpose and each needs to be the best product it can be.

Do people still buy iPads? They're so overpriced for all the imposed limitations with lack of mouse support, true background multitasking, Kodi, emulation, VP9 codec for YouTube, file manager, torrent clients, etc. And, engineered for obsolescence so Safari browser stops working on modern sites after iOS updates stop while gimping 3rd party browsers like Firefox and Chrome.

I think probably the majority of consumers don't pay much attention to the specs exc, they just think 'oh this is good for this price' or 'I don't want to spend that much...oh this one is less'.

For me personally I love the pro 11....but don't want to spend that much for what I am using it for. I I was holding off to see what the next regular ipads had going on but $329 for the current 128GB (has been on sale for 3 weeks now) is a really great price.....this new rumor has me even more 'what do I want to do???' but anyway time will tell.
