15" MBA is very likely. We had a rumour about this a couple of weeks ago. I am hoping for iPancakes though.

question is, will it be a 15" Air, or will it be renamed?

'cause IwantIT, a new 17" Mac before the 2nd week of september

why would it "have" to be one of those things? awfully short sighted.

why couldn't it be a television with an integrated AppleTV running some form of iOS that would allow app downloads straight to the TV, or.....anything else, for that matter?

Entirely new Mac product?

Well, it'll either have to be a laptop, desktop or tablet, or a combination of either: most likely laptop and tablet.

So when Steve said, what would happen if a Mac and an iPad hooked up, he was referring to the "mistake child"..

Simplify. None of this "between this and that" stuff. MacBooks: 11", 15", "17". All in a thin Air form without optical drive. Touch screens (they can lean back) iMacs will just be Macs. Completely new form factor that has the screen more like a drafting table. Touchable. Mac Mini remains the same with minor spec bump. Mac Pro is a rack mount server. Next Mac OS will run iOS apps as widgets. This is why Dashboard was promoted in Lion's Mission Control.

Follow the money trail. Apple invested billions in sharp and toshiba LCD manufacturing, who coincidentally are competitors of samsung, currently one of the giants in the LCD tv market. The smart tv market is growing here and in Asia, everyone wants to stream Netflix, but no one wants to buy a separate box to watch it... Or go on the Internet (google tv was too expensive).... It fits into apple's ecosystem of products and services... Stream iTunes movies on my tv using my iPad as the remote... We want something that just works.... When was the last time apple tv was updated?

Wasn't the ATV just updated a few weeks ago with some minor stuff like Vimeo?

Then it wouldn't be a Mac. ;)

I think they should get rid of the 13inch Pro. Just have 15 and 17 models, with the MacBook Air design. You'd then have the lighter 11 and 13 Air models, with the heavier 15 and 17 models. I think a 13inch Air and Pro may confuse the new/basic consumer.

I need a portable, lightweight computer with pro features, hardware upgradeability and a wide array of I/O, and as of right now, the only notebook in Apple's lineup that fits this description is the 13" MacBook Pro (since the 15" version is too large for my backpack and not nearly as portable)... sure, the 13" Air is slightly lighter and has a higher screen resolution than the 13" MBP, but those pros aside, even the latest MBA revision is simply too underpowered and locked down for my needs.

Maybe it's finally a real iPad that's a tablet that runs OSX and has a usb port.

Either a touchscreen mac to utilize all the gestures Apple's forced into Lion or a desktop between the mini and macpro, which will then see the macpro discontinued.

That is what I am waiting for years now. A small Mac Pro with only 2 bays for harddrives and only one slot for a graphics card, but with the same power than a Mac Pro.

Remember the Quadra 700?

I agree. As a graphic design pro, I really don't need a tower (and I suspect with inclusion of Thunderbolt, the days of multiple internal drives are soon ending) but something that can kick-ass as far as power but doesn't have a glossy-only display attached would be great. But of course, we are seeing Apple keep the pro market hanging by a thinner and thinner thread year-after-year. :(

Neither of those makes sense. Steve Jobs plainly said Touch screens don't work and the trackpad is where all the gestures in Lion are and the 2nd absolutely makes no economical sense at this point.

They should keep the currents designs (except the mac pro) and just don't smash OSX and iOS together. That's what microsoft is doing. They are taking thier "windows mobile 7" and putting it on windows 8. That means the desktop is gone for windows and a 70% consumer decrease in windows :D.

I am not sure why people think a touch-based Mac is a good idea. Have you seen what your tablet looks like after a couple of days? I am very particular about smudges on my screen and I would hate to have to clean my iTouch_my_mac every day. Surely Apple realises this too and hence why we have the trackpad instead for touchy-feely stuff?

just don't smash OSX and iOS together.

Too late for that. The very first iPhone shipped with a version of iOS and OS X smashed together. Both OSes have always had common roots and always will. It makes no sense to split the development of many of the common parts (like the kernel and many user level sub-systems like the display server and foundation frameworks).

What about an OS X powered tablet that detaches from a main docking station?

Think of a larger iPad (maybe 15”) plugged into a docking station that houses a large hard drive, RAM, discrete graphics chip, and has a wireless keyboard and track pad.

When docked, you can edit HD video, play games, etc on a powerful system with all your files stored there.

When you need some portability, you just pluck the table / monitor off the stand and off you go. It has limited storage which is synced with the larger HDD. It shifts into an iOS like mode when out and about, but when you plug it back in, you have a full featured Mac.

I know I’m going out on a limb with this one and it’s not likely to happen, but this is all about speculation, right?

Anyway, Apple would never copy HP :

Why would Apple copy Motorola ?

Now I wish that everyone that posts what you quoted reads this and really let's it sink in so I don't have to read it ever again.

I'd like to see the MBP line lose the optical drive, but allow for two drives. The most likely way I see Apple doing this is to use the proprietary SSD as in the MBA, and then allow for a additional 2.5" HDD (or SSD) as the second drive option. Doing this, they could probably still manage to make the MBP slightly thinner/lighter or give it a tiny bit more battery.

What would be really sick is if they could give the 17" options for two SSDs + 2.5" drive. Imagine: two 256GB SSDs in RAID 0 configuration + 1TB HDD. Doubt that will happen though.
