I doubt you could do an ENTIRELY different Mac lineup. Maybe updated MacBook Pros without optical drives, a redesigned Mac Pro and a thinner iMac without the bottom grey part, just a screen. Maybe new names, but I doubt anything "radically new" would appear in the concept of computing.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8L1)

My friend that used to work at Apple R&D said they were looking at something in between an iPad and MacBook.

This was over a year and a half ago though, so I kind of forgot about it and figured they dropped it.

Wouldn't that be the 11" Air?

I definitely see a touchscreen iMac-like computer in the near future. I always wondered why Apple implemented something like Launchpad into OSX Lion and (IMO) this has to be the reason. I haven't heard anyone using it for normal computer use when the OSX Dock does the same thing but much cleaner.

However, Launchpad is made for touch input. I could see an Launchpad-like overlay that would also run iOS touch apps ontop of a OSX background. Sort of like how Dashboard used to be implemented. Then, with one click of a mouse or flick of a finger the user can go back to mouse/keyboard input mode in a normal Lion environment. The integration of full-screen apps is also a huge plus for a touch screen environment.

maybe they will finally drop the "i" business. Am i the only one who thinks its becoming outdated?
It's "interim". That never gets old . . . .

There was a mouse alternative from IBM which was a little joystick in the middle of the keyboard. That had mouse functionality, was suited to all finger sizes, and fit on the smallest of devices.

If everything going forward will have Thunderbolt, from the mini to the pad to the pro, we're gonna need an external box to hold all the stuff it and wifi talks to.

Rocketman

To some of the comments on here, the story is about a BRAND NEW product line, not an upgrade to an existing line so it is not talking about the Mac Pro or MacBook Pro refresh as they are still going to be a laptop and a powerful desktop.

TV? I guess that's a good call but IMO it will fail if they do that as with Apple's pricing they won't be able to compete in the market. They would have to let the heavy discounts be made by the stores and etailers for it to sell. IMO.

Then again this can totally be a bogus rumour?

Would be nice if they could improve the auto spell check in the new Safari

iMac iPad combo

Could it be something like this?

iPod: iPod Touch re-named with the fancy colors of the iPod Nano. All other iPods are discontinued.
iAir: Basically a double-screened iPad, like the NintendoDS, but bigger. Bottom screen can change to a keyboard if needed, otherwise other information can be shown.
iPro: A laptop with a secret charging technology. While on battery power or charging, it's as powerful as a Macbook Pro, while when fully charged, it's as powerful as a Mac Pro.
iServer: A huge system that's incredibly powerful and highly customizable. An iServer can drive up to 10 iAir or iPro screens so those machines shouldn't be processing anything really, other than keeping the computer on. All this with advanced second-generation Thunderbolt technology.

Just a thought...

I'll buy it if both screens can change to 2 different keyboards at the same time. That would completely eliminate procrastination in the work force and, by my rough calculations, improve productivity by a factor of 2.0f

lost in translation

since no Japanese user commented in this thread, I just want to point out that the translation mentioned in the article is slightly misleading.

it's not that there will be a new complete lineup. what they said in the Japanese article in nutshell is that according to an Asian supplier, Apple is planning on releasing a totally new Mac product, not present in current lineup.

so it's not a completely new lineup of all the Mac products.

The new iThink. Mind - computer interface. Faster than Thunderbolt. Accessories coming in 2015.

So I was thinking of buying a Mac Mini this week....should I wait?

If a new line of Macs come out and I want one, will Apple upgrade me for free?

It's not fair.

;)

We pretty much know that there will be a Mac Pro in the fourth quarter so surely this Japanese site is reporting that and hyping it up because the case will look slightly different and may include more pro-sumer friendly pricing at the bottom range?

You should wait until 2014 for the new Arm Pro - Mac Pro with 64 ARM A6 processors.

Corporations use Linux. Small companies use Windows and Mac. Maybe after a few years, most small companies will use Mac as Mac OS gains popularity.

Most small companies using Windows have never really used Mac before, so they don't know enough about it to make a switch confidently.

Depends on the small company. I work at a small software company and we use Linux, Windows and Macs. Developers get to choose which of the three they want to use. We have servers running Linux and Windows, but no OS X servers. If you don't run Windows, you have to run a Windows VM since some of our legacy products are Windows-only.

Of course this is a software company and it's a different profile than most other small companies.

Honestly I feel Apple should bring back something to replace the Macbook line it killed because the Air is no replacement.

My guess is that Apple is redesigning the form of the Mac Pro and it is very different from the current so someone is assuming it is a new product when in fact it isn't

Actually, it would make sense to drop "Pro" from the Workstation product. It appears that the "Pro" label seems to draw more posturing and extremely dubious inferences than positive viewpoints.

The Workstation tower does need a redesign. Not because it is "old" but because it doesn't fit the usage profiles anymore now that being rackmounted has been merged into its duties. The handles just gratuitously make it a misfit. Deeper (maybe wider) and shorter would work better in covering the expanded dual roles. That could open window for a name change.

I suppose they might get into trademark problems with "Mac Truck" as a label. :) But that's what it is moving toward (multi-use lightweight truck to get commercial jobs done. ).
