Now I wish that everyone that posts what you quoted reads this and really let's it sink in so I don't have to read it ever again.

Well, to be fair, people are referring in a merging of Springboard and Finder when they say "iOS" and "OS X". Obviously, that can't work. Finder is very much a keyboard/mouse based UI and Springboard very much a Touch type UI. Everything else is basically common between both OSes.

Honestly I feel Apple should bring back something to replace the Macbook line it killed because the Air is no replacement.

No need. More likely the next update cycle Apple will just drop "Air" off MBA air line up and it will be the Macbooks.

If they just shaved $100 ( or $200 ) off MBP 13" you'd have the 'old' MB's replacement. There really isn't a need for another container for a sub $1100 13" model. They could just swap in less expensive components into the MBP 13" to hit that price point. (e.g., minimal RAM , relatively small HDD, no keyboard backlight, etc.) . They just need an low entry point model.

The major problem that the MB had was that it was between a rock and hard place in pricing. Couldn't go lower than $999 (because can't get into iPad range). Couldn't go higher than $1199 ( because can't get into MBP range). There was no place to even offer multiple configs. Unless Apple uncorks the sub $999 range, there is no good reason to bring it back. Just move the MBP 13" down to cover more of that space is simpler (less designs to work on) and provides the same functionality. ( just can't limbo down to exactly $999 ..... frankly that too can fix if just give retailers some flexibility to regularly push price specials down there. )

At some point Apple is either going to kill off the Mac with > $999 prices or will have to let the Mac and iPad mix it up a bit more. They can probably get away with the current set up for a couple more years but eventually the price difference between WindowsPCs and Mac will get too large.

Isn't that called the Mac Mini? ;)

Not quite right .. Mac Mini is a desktop non portable Macbook Pro :p

Headless iMac should be excellent for me. An upgradeability of a MacPro .. but using consumer class component like in iMac .. and the most important is .. using desktop GPU for extra performance.

I'd sell my iMac for that kind of Mac .. if it's ever to be real though.

Frankly I doubt it .. Apple love to make things smaller and slimmer ... they wouldn't care too much about desktop computer anymore for sure

I'd like to see the MBP line lose the optical drive, but allow for two drives. The most likely way I see Apple doing this is to use the proprietary SSD as in the MBA, and then allow for a additional 2.5" HDD (or SSD) as the second drive option. Doing this, they could probably still manage to make the MBP slightly thinner/lighter or give it a tiny bit more battery.

What would be really sick is if they could give the 17" options for two SSDs + 2.5" drive. Imagine: two 256GB SSDs in RAID 0 configuration + 1TB HDD. Doubt that will happen though.

I can see your dream :p
Personally, I would like to see more battery life than that it will be thinner.
But slightly thinner and more battery would be perfect (a)

And let be honest, who needs an optical drive?

If the mac had iOS on it, will it have bootcamp? NO

First, Macs already have "iOS" just like iPhones already have "OS X". Again : They are basically the same OS already, sharing their kernels, display servers and a lot of frameworks (known as foundation and Core).

Second, why wouldn't they have Bootcamp ? Bootcamp is an application, you could very much still have it. All it does is partition the disk and setup the boot loader to permit multiboot of OSes through a BIOS emulator. iOS still requires a boot loader, same as any other OSes.

Third, Windows supports EFI nowadays, meaning Bootcamp probably won't even be necessary in the future.

With the decline of desktop sales, you guys can forget it. There is no new Mac desktop coming. If anything, the Mac desktops will be going in the next few years.

My guess is a 50" plasma iTV with integrated iOS, webcam, microphone and an entirely new type of a touch screen remote control, able to run special apps from App store .

A iMac with little storage wich can only boot in target disk mode and could also be used as an all-in-one apple tv? So when you come you connect your macbook air with thunderbolt and you could use the big iMac screen and it's processing power.. But you could also run apps on it without a macbook

The G5 Powerbook!

Seriously, though, perhaps it is a more consumer-oriented replacement for the Mac Pro (something in between it and the iMac, or between the iMac and the Mini), or more likely, it could be the '15" Air' that people are talking about. I doubt it would be a touchscreen the way Steve Jobs talked down that idea at the Lion preview last year.

The Atv hardware hasn't seen an update in a year or so (responding to an earlier post), but if we are sticking to macs, a Mac air whose screen swivels and closes to become an arm powered iPad, I know it would cut in sales of some MacBook airs and ipads but it would be useful, hence profitable (earlier such devices flopped, i know) Apple could get into more homes and businesses by offering an Apple or intel processor powered, barebones iMac that would ONLY connect to the icloud, just like the chrome book. Think of all the people that don't care for much other than going in the net or the workers who just deal with stuff on their corporate networks.

Then it wouldn't be a Mac. ;)

MacTV

Just a massive iMac but with literally no hard drive just running ATV and all the rest of you stuff from the cloud.

The remote will be like a touch and you launch programmes straight from that.

I'm salivating just thinking about it. :p

a mac book replacement duh!

My guess: The all new "Rac Pro" or maybe it will be called the Rac Mac or Mac Rac

a rack-mountable Mac Pro with removeable rack-ears which can be re-configured for tower or desktop footprint. I haven't seen a shred of evidence that this is in the works... Its just wishful thinking.

Why not just a 'Mac'?

Budget version of the Mac Pro Desktop, with easily upgradeable internals, to be hooked up to any external screen

Would make a huge difference to market share.

No, it wouldn't. 90%+ of the PC towers out there have never been upgraded. People only buy PC towers because they think that's all there is unless they go portable. The upgradeable PC is a niche task, let alone the upgradeable Mac. And if you are niche, you will pay more, i.e. the Mac Pro.

That said, now we have Thunderbolt, I could see the Mac Pro to be redesigned so it will be smaller as it doesn't need all of the expansion (an even "nichier niche") slots and four drive bays. However, I wouldn't expect it to be that much cheaper. You're not going to see a $1000 Mac mini-tower.

Tv

Well considering that Apple tv has been selling pretty 'well' I think Apple can now see that it has some good potential.

It has to be a TV line. Apple can't just have 3 new touch-screen computers. That will kill off iPad and other Macs. Remember, Apple like things very simple. They don't need anymore computers. This is a great time to step into a new category and leave their Apple tv hobby to make it a real competitive product line. Plus Apple makes much more off Apps, Music, Movies, TV shows in a long run. Apple tv that runs iOS and Apps can push iOS even further.

My experience with touchscreen monitors is that they are a PITA, or as Jobs would say, "a bag of hurt." Unless they can lie flat, like a tablet, it will never happen.

Yep - everyone at a desktop Mac right now, please reach out and pretend you are using a touch screen. Do it for one minute. Awkward isn't it. Tiring too.

Now, we've seen that Mac patent that shows the iMac screen sliding down into a horizontal position. Now answer this question - when would you want it in vertical position? Only when watching a long movie, maybe? That's it. So why bother build a complicated screen lowering system when it will be lowered 99% of the time so you can actually use the thing. What touch-based UI is appropriate where you need more than what an iPad offers? Graphics artists already have tablets, and even ones like the Cintiq with a built-in screen.

I don't think this touch-Mac will ever come to be. There's no reason for it.

apple didn't build this for no reason

my guess...new laptop running ios#,cloud.

Neither of those makes sense. Steve Jobs plainly said Touch screens don't work and the trackpad is where all the gestures in Lion are and the 2nd absolutely makes no economical sense at this point.

I bet it's a laser mouse that attaches to your head or glasses so that everywhere you look, you will be pointing.
