I'm still thinking (or more like hoping) the refresh MBA is actually going to just be called the MacBook and possibly come in both 13" and 15" sizes. The 13" MBA will remain at the entry level and maybe even get a price cut. The 13" MBP will be discontinued.

So the lineup will something like:

13" MBA - $999 8/256 M1 (Possibly lower)
13" MacBook - $1299 8/256 M2
15" MacBook - $1599 8/256 M2
14" MBP - $1999 16/512 M1 Pro
16" MBP - $2199 16/512 M1 Pro
I would think that at some point you'd start seeing 16GB as a standard, especially on the 15" $1600 model. For the middle though.... I'd hope that Apple does some comparison pricing to similar laptops in that price range. You can get a 13" XPS with 16/512 for $1130. The XPS 15" is around $1500 for the same config.
That, or they really need to stop with the rip-off pricing of the upgrades. $100 for 8>16, $100 for 256>512 and $200 for 256>1TB.

im thinking about getting a m1 macbook air - should i wait?
I mean the prices over the last couple of weeks won't be touched by a new Air. I'd expect a refresh to be at least $1000-1200. The performance increase won't be worth the additional 25-30% more for the average user, however I'm sure the new design will look more modern.

Personally, I picked up a M1 MBP 13 off Facebook with 16/1TB for a fraction of new. The current M1 is so ridiculously fast in comparison to anything on the x86 side, especially within the ultrabook size.

ya thats true im getting a deal on a m1 macbook air for around $400 off and the dude still has apple care for 3 more years.

Frankly, I think the only Macs that will be introduced or updated in 2022 are a larger iMac and a new Mac Pro. These should use an updated core so I guess they could use what will be called the M2.

We may have to wait until the 3nm process shrink to get a significantly improved MacBook Air and that isn't supposed to happen until early 2023.

I don't see how Apple could possibly update the Apple silicon for every Mac in their product line in a single year, meaning that something will have to give. Right now I'm sure their only focus is the iMac and Mac Pro.

That said, I guess they might add the M1 Max or M1 Pro to the Mac mini and the larger iMac. But, it would seem to make more sense for both the MacBook Air and Mac mini to wait for the 3nm chips.

And they will all look like computers in the black mirror’ social credit episode, cheers.

Some places had the base 8/256 MBA for $799 - not sure if they still do. That is an absolute steal if it fits your needs. I think any MBA refresh (or rename) is going to come in at a higher price than what the regular MBA base prices are now.

My wife is in the same boat. She is using two devices now, MBP 15 2015 and iPad Air 3, but both devices are full of compromises, and we are thinking of getting rid of both and replacing them with a base MBA M1. Costco has MBA M1 8GB/256GB for $799. I believe this is a hard price to beat; even refurbs sell for me. We can sell both of her older systems and get ahead. I already have MBA M1 as a work machine, and that system is a beast. I know she won't be using half of the performance, so whatever the new MBA M2 offers, it will not be utilized by her anyway, so I am pretty confident to get her heavily discounted MBA M1.

An entry level M2 Pro has to have something significant the M2 won’t have, besides a different colour scheme, to warrant its existence.
Screen size most likely.

The entry level MBP will likely be the current 14”MBP with an M2 chip rather than an M1Pro chip. If we are lucky they might release M2 14” and 16” entry level MBPs but it’s apple so probably not.

So yeah, they won’t be lollipop colours. But won’t be as expensive as the M1Pros.

Entry level MBP doesn't make sense. a 13" MBA, then the two MBP models makes sense.
Agreed.

There is no reason for Apple to release both a MacBook Air and an entry-level MacBook Pro, unless it plans to really differentiate them.

As of now, they are basically the same product. The Air is slightly lighter, and the Pro has some higher-end features. But they are pretty much the same.

A larger MacBook Air would make sense instead. The M1 16-inch MacBook Pro is too heavy at 2.1kg and much less suitable for regular users than the previous 15/16-inch models.

Cool. I have an Intel MacBook Air that is feeling slow despite it only being three years old… will probably jump in on the 2022 models.

After the October event, during which I think a lot of us expected new iMacs, I'm really hoping the rumor mill is correct in its statements about the new 27" iMac arriving in Q1 2022. I'm very interested to see what Apple is going to do with the M1 Max and Pro chips, especially with much fewer thermal/power constraints.

Some people keep saying this, but the reality is, many organizations and commercial users buy entry level M1 MBP. The better display and longer battery life are noticeable.
Makes sense. However, it seems likely that the new “MacBook” or “MacBook Air” will have an equal or better display than the current 13” MBP (rumored to be miniLED). If that ends up happening, then Apple keeping the 13” MBP around would be really weird, especially considering that its M2 chip could very well sustain higher maximum performance than M1 even without a fan. We’ll just have to wait and see I guess.

Hm well he could be right but that seems really strange to me. I can’t see the 13” MacBook Pro making much sense even now let alone after a fancy new MacBook Air is released.

MacBook Air. Cheap M1 model and an M2 model. Both passively cooled.
MacBook 12" and 14" with M2. <- replaces 13" MacBook Pro
MacBook Pro M1 Pro, Max

People keep mentioning 11 and 12in. MacBooks. Won’t happen. Not with ever thinner bezels to allow for larger displays within a modest sized chassis.

They had a 12in. and killed it off because hardly anyone wanted it anymore. It’s not cost effective.

I have this feeling that the Mac mini will be the first to get a "refresh," one that only needs a press release and introductory video. Think of it as the MacBook Pro in a desktop computer format. The 24" iMac will likely get an internal hardware refresh, one that supports the M2 SoC on the lower end and the M1 Pro SoC on the higher end.
