Not going to happen since a 15” product would be at least 3.5 lbs. in other words, it wouldn’t be an Air.
A 15.2" MBA with minimal bezels like the Pros would have almost exactly the same footprint as the 2017 MacBook Air, I fail to see why it would have to weigh more than the 3lbs that weighed?

People keep mentioning 11 and 12in. MacBooks. Won’t happen. Not with ever thinner bezels to allow for larger displays within a modest sized chassis.

They had a 12in. and killed it off because hardly anyone wanted it anymore. It’s not cost effective.

The 12-inch was killed off in part because Intel Core M was a failure (mostly because they couldn't get their 10nm process going quickly enough). That said, it never made sense to have both the 12-inch and the Air, so we're more likely to see it replaced by a new Air that's slimmer, and thus effectively closer in size to the 12-inch.

I'm thinking (and hoping) they'll release a 15"-16" MBA or entry-level MBP. I want a large screen for work, media, etc. but don't need all the extra power of the M1 Pro/Max or want to pay that high cost. I feel there must be many people in this same camp, right? I'd imagine that an EL MBP with a large screen but less power would be how they differentiate it from other models - in a sense it would be a hybrid.

I really hope Apple will release a new display, especially to be added to a macbook pro setup.
The XDR is just too expensive....
I'd love to see a smaller (27") Mini-Led for about 2K.
Right now the only viable mini-LED solutions are the Pro Display XDR and the still extremely expensive 32" Asus Proart.

  • A high-end iMac with Apple silicon to sit above the 24-inch iMac in the lineup
  • A significant MacBook Air revamp featuring the "M2" chip and a new design
  • An updated Mac mini
  • A new version of the entry-level MacBook Pro
  • A new Mac Pro with Apple silicon
  • and a revolutionary internet communications device

Hm well he could be right but that seems really strange to me. I can’t see the 13” MacBook Pro making much sense even now let alone after a fancy new MacBook Air is released.

I agree. Having a smaller MacBook Pro with a lower price makes sense, but only 1” difference in screen size and a big drop in CPU grunt makes it seem like less of a Pro device.

I really think they're missing an 11" MacBook Air.

My ex loved hers.

Because it would fit in various handbags. The 13" machines won't.

The M1 processor will certainly fit in that enclosure.
The problem with an 11-inch MacBook Air is that the screen size would be too small to accommodate the keyboard. Plus, the previous 11-inch MacBook Air had a 16:9 screen and large bezels, which is no longer the case.

Makes sense. However, it seems likely that the new “MacBook” or “MacBook Air” will have an equal or better display than the current 13” MBP (rumored to be miniLED). If that ends up happening, then Apple keeping the 13” MBP around would be really weird, especially considering that its M2 chip could very well sustain higher maximum performance than M1 even without a fan. We’ll just have to wait and see I guess.

I think it’s safe to assume the MBP 13 will get a mini LED display equal to or better than MBA.

The 2021 iPad Pro is 0.1 lbs heavier than the 2020 model due to battery and mini LED. I’d expect the same increases for the MBA. That assumes Apple is willing to use the same thin bezels for MBA as the MBP, which I don’t believe is likely.

The 2017 MBA has a non-retina TN display which uses the least power among current LCD technologies. I think the 2022 MBA will carry a much larger battery than before.

This makes me think Apple is planning a bi-yearly refresh for Apple silicon macs. Wonder if should go for the M1 Max now or wait til 2023?
It’s hard to say. The pandemic, chip shortages, and supply constraints have caused major issues everywhere. This may just be a short term plan for now.

"A new version of the entry-level MacBook Pro" shouldn't that just be the new Apple MacBook?
The Pros look good as they are at 14 & 16 inches. Perhaps a 12 & 14 inch regular MacBook with more student/home friendly spec would be a winner. The Air could be the "coupe" version with a similar spec as the 12/14 but thinner sleeker profile and more design orientated!
Just an idea Apple.

There’s probably still a market niche for a machine that slots in between the air and the 14” MBP.

that rumored cheap MBP could be the dream machine. Just imagine, M2, three ports like the rumored airs (MagSafe, and a USB C on either side, plus headphone jack) no SD card slot, no HDMI. 14 inch screen, mini led, but none faster refresh rate. The battery life would be better than the current 14, but it kind of gives everyone that larger air that some of us have always wanted. start it at $1500. I'd hope for at least 32 gigs of ram, but I'm guessing 16 could be the max. I'd still probably get one with a 16 gig/2TB if it had the larger screen. I care more about battery life than I do about the extra ports.

Make it a 15" or 16" screen then deal.

All I want is an updated Mac mini with a 2.1 HDMI port. Is that really too much to ask for? I don’t even mind if it’s expensive. Please Apple, just get it done. (That and more than 2TB storage…)

he's picked what hasn't been updated yet and ran that through his prognostication-engine ( a Tomigatchi) and this is Gurman's prediction.

Entry level MBP currently uses just M1 and slightly higher cpu speeds/cycles so it's needing an upgrade.
MBA & MacMini first two machines having Apple Silicon so of course they'll be updated in 2022.
iMac Pro - could flop or not happen. If it debuts before MBA/MacMini with M2 makes sense. After and just 6mths or less before Mac Pro Apple Silicon based mega computer - doesn't make sense. so we'll see.

now ... the REAL questions are:
Entry level MBP will it stay 13" or get full 14" redesign like it's bigger brother?
Entry level MBP will it get 3 direct TB4 controllers or will it be sharing? Will the MBA M2 have individual TB4 Controllers?

Hmmm.

The entry level MBP is the most redundant of Apple's offerings
Well, if they made a MBP with an M1, but with higher end audio, screen, and ports than the MBA, and also made it in multiple sizes so there is one with at least 15", then I would definitely buy one. However, if they simply made a 15/16" MBA, then I'd get one too. I want a 16", but definitely don't need the power of the M1 Pro, and the price tag is eyewatering when you don't need all that power. Some of us just want bigger screens without all the enforced expensive power upgrades that come with.

They had a plenty usable keyboard on the 11” machine before.
Partially because of that wide and vertically challenged 16:9 aspect ratio. It made the case wide enough for the keyboard but any web page or document work was frustrating because the screen was so short. (I had one and used it for several years though usually with an external monitor when I could)

There's no reason they can't do that again.

No, it isn't for me either, but for those who want an ultra-portable - the 13" machines will not suffice.

It's a niche for sure, but currently Apple do not have anything in that niche since it was discontinued.
