Don't think I am buying iPad for some time. I will come back once Apple figures out what they want the device to be (hardware and software).

It will probably have a non-mechanical home button like the iPhone 7 - though I've never broken a mechanical home button, I do prefer the new type.

I don't see them having non-symmetric bezels though, that seems very un-Apple like.

No Home Button and probably no headphone jack, and the already removed the lock/unlock Switch. What will they remove next?

Johny Ive appears on a white background. He squints his eyes and wrinkles his eyebrows as he begins to speak.

"At Apple, we strive to make our devices as simple as possible. We believe that technology should get out of the way of what matters the most.

The New New iPad Air features a removed home button, a removed headphone jack, a removed unlock switch, and now: an all-new removed Retina display. This gorgeous screen features eight million pixels, is 12% brighter with up to 22% better color fidelity. We had to build a whole new factory just to produce this gorgeous display. However, unlike the previous iPad which came with the display, the New New iPad Air comes without it. This allows it to be 7% thinner and 9% lighter, and it increases the battery life by up to 3 hours. This means that although you can't see it, the New New iPad Air can browse the web more efficiently and for longer than ever before."

The iPad is about to get force touch. The thickness is going to to attributed to the added display thickness. So bring it on this will add another dimension of interaction and also bring the device into line with the iPhones. I think they have long wanted to have it on all iOS devices but were stumped as to how to do it with out making them even more thick than what they are going to have to do.

Never understood the hate for the dreaded camera bump. While I agree it is a bit of an eyesore, it was definitely functional in my use.
.
On the iPad it is nice as it brings the camera more flush with a case, and, you are less likely to get edge distortion in photos / videos taken on an iPad when it resides in a thicker protective case. In my use, it is also nicer for wiping the lens off, as it isn't reassessed as far. That was one of the biggest issues I had with the iPhone 5 and 5s when used in Apple's own leather case as the camera area was a dust magnet, and hard to quickly clean before taking a picture.

Unfortunately they didn't mention the screen resolution...

Some people would like 1024 x 768 with slightly bigger pixels. Some people would like 1366 x 1024 with slightly smaller pixels. Some people would like some resolution in between.

You do realize that's less than the thickness of a penny, right? It doesn't take that much imagination to realize that increase is inconsequential.

Having used several iPads for the past 3 years of both thicknesses: 6.1mm and 7.5mm, it's significant. It might just be a penny, but it's a 23% increase.

My money is on 2732x2048 in a 10.5" display. Apple will likely want to avoid introducing a third resolution for developers to have to support, which limits what numbers they can play around with.

If there is no top or bottom non-screen area, where do you hold it? Sometimes I need to grab the phone and hold it without cover things up or touching the screen, from the front. If it's almost all screen, how do you (sometimes) grab it or hold it without pushing buttons or accidentally swiping the screen? I think a bezel of some size at least on top/bottom is necessary for normal use.
I said this about bezel free phones, and it's even more relevant to pads. I have a game I must always hold my pad with 2 hands, and use my thumbs to hold the pad on the top/bottom (held sideways). It will be much harder to hold with no (or even less) non-touch area. Holding a pad up for someone to view even requires some side bezel sometimes. It's a human-machine interaction mistake to try to reduce the bezel area to zero. People interact with things. We need affordances. Apple needs to stop being a slave to absolute minimalism.

My 12.9 inch iPad Pro does not have a Camera Bump o_O
And it looks like it will stay that way with the 0.3mm thickness increase, but this model is set to replace the 9.7" which has a camera bump larger than any iPhone. While it is manageable with a phone, it really isn't suitable for a tablet in my opinion.

Yeah, Steve Jobs knew what he was doing with the iPad 1/2/3/4 designs where the bezel was the same on each side. Holding one of those is actually a lot more comfortable. It doesn't look as cool, but it's more convenient.

Yeah it will likely be 2731x2048 with a ppi of 326. It'll be nice to see a sharper display in the smaller model. I think this will be positioned as the true small Pro along with the 12.9".

WOW, color me surprised. Apple will roll out a thicker product. I'm happy they're going that way, the camera bump is horrible.
Apple Watch Series 2 is also thicker than the first Apple Watch.

To OP: so they will use the new iPads for testing iPhone 8 design.

Apple has a nearly bezel-free 10.9-inch iPad Pro under development without a Home button, according to Japanese website Mac Otakara.

The report said the nearly bezel-free design will allow for the 10.9-inch model to have the same overall footprint as the current 9.7-inch iPad Pro. A top bezel will remain in order to provide space for the front-facing FaceTime camera, but the bottom bezel will be reduced, according to supply chain sources cited.

The much-rumored 10.9-inch model will also be marginally thicker at 7.5mm, the same depth as the original iPad Air. The current 9.7-inch iPad Pro measures 6.1mm thick. The next 12.9-inch model will also be 0.3mm thicker at 7.2mm, while a rumored 7.9-inch iPad Pro will allegedly likely have the same dimensions as the iPad mini 4.

Earlier this month, a group of Barclays analysts said Apple will launch a trio of new iPad Pro models in March, including the aforementioned bezel-free 10.9-inch model and refreshed 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch versions. The note likewise said the 10.9-inch model will have a 9.7-inch footprint without a Home button.

Multiple rumors have pointed towards a new iPad in the 10-inch range, but the exact screen size has varied in each report. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said 10.5 inches, echoed by DigiTimes, while an earlier Mac Otakara report said 10.1 inches. Mac Otakara and Barclays now appear to agree on 10.9 inches.

Mac Otakara previously said the 10.9-inch iPad Pro will feature quad microphones, compared to the dual-microphone setup on existing iPad Pro models, and retain a 3.5mm headphone jack. More "revolutionary" changes, including a switch to OLED displays, are expected in 2018, according to Kuo.

Gross. There's nothing worse when a "bezel free" device still has a large single bezel. They need to stop using that buzzword.
