I think this is likely for two reasons: the first is that with the 6s, Apple showed for the first time in any "S" model that they are willing to differentiate the displays in the "S" model and its "regular" counterpart (the 6s has a stronger glass, which technically isn't the display, but it's something).

The second reason is that when Apple increases resolutions to 1080p and whatever higher number for the 7 Plus variant, they probably wouldn't go higher than that for the iPhone 8, so they might as well speed-up the OLED process one year and give it to the 7s so they can at least have an interesting and useful feature to talk about.

Certainly plenty of good things about going OLED. Also plenty of bad. Image burn in is a problem. It's also very sensitive to water and ruined easily by it. We'll see how Apple overcomes many of the issues it brings.
I've used my S5 in the pool on multiple occasions. Image burn in on display phones running 24/7. I could be wrong but it seems as if you're quoting OLED info from years ago. Never heard the water issue before. This may assuage.

iPhone wasn't the first smartphone.
iPod wasn't the first MP3 player.
iPad wasn't the first tablet.
Google wasn't the first search engine.
Facebook wasn't the first social network.
Ford wasn't the first automobile.

It's not about being first. It's about doing it in a better way than the others.

Ya but this is just a single component? How is apple going to make the display better than Samsung, when it's MADE by Samsung?

Huh? The Galaxy S7 is IP68 water resistant. You can put it in a tub of water for 20 minutes. It's OLED..

I've never wanted to go swimming with or take a shower with my phone. I always think it's weird when Android people tout that. I have a co-worker who has bragged about it before. It's just weird.

Samsung makes Apples A9 chips. But Samsung doesn't make any Samsung phones using the A9 chip. Apple has some OLED patents, and if Samsung makes displays for Apple that fall under those patents, they won't be able to make the identical displays for their own phones. Similar, perhaps (using slightly different technology), but not identical.

Maybe you want to go for water ride...and get splashed...it wouldn't be bad. What if it was raining? Sure...water resistance is great.

Hahaha wonder what certain members on this site who hate on Samsung OLED gonna say niw
It's going to be silent...(cricket...cricket)

Apple, who is reportedly close to a deal with Samsung for flexible OLEDs, has been interested in using curved OLED displays in future iPhones,
So what is it now? Curved displays or flexible displays?

I can't be the only one who gets annoyed when a blogger once again mixes up these terms as if they were interchangeable, when in fact they do describe two completely different things.

I've had many cell phones and have never gone out of my way to avoid a rain shower. Never once had a cell phone damaged by water. If Apple advertised that I could rinse my phone off in a sink under running water (like some android phone commercial did once) I would have the same thought, "Who does that?"

Certainly. That's why I recently got a LifeProof case. Aside for "just in case" protection, it's nice to occassionally take some awesome slo-mos underwater or taking my 6s to the beach with confidence it won't get wrecked by sand or water.

I always wanted to use my phone in the pool. :D

What do you think why so many people buy waterproof cases for their iPhones?

I own a waterproof case for my iPhone, because during my vacation, I most definitely wasn't going to leave it on the beach while I went swimming. And I also wanted to take pictures of my family while in the water. I also do like to use my phone while taking a bath without having to worry that it will drop in the water.

Don't forget the tried and true "I dropped it in the toilet". It's always amazing how short sighted people can be. Let's ditch this feature because I don't swim with my phone.

It would be nice if iphone has it...but...i'm sure there are other phones that already does that...without a case. :)

may I add...raining day calls.

OLED on devices like Samsung is nice and all but accommodating it with Apple's humble battery is going to be a challenge.

http://www.displaymate.com/Galaxy_S7_ShootOut_1.htm

I'm glad Apple is going OLED. S7 was voted the best display for mobile phones by Displaymate. Hopefully, the next iPhone with OLED display takes that spot. :) But as of now, I believe the iPhone has the best LCD display. From what I've read anyway.

iPhone 6 and newer use a nice Japan Display Inc (JDI) LCD display which is the same display in my $45 Moto G 2013.

2017 is too long of a wait for SAMOLED on iPhone. It needs to be on the iPhone 7.

Oh yeah. The difference between OLED and LED is massive, especially in contrasts. They are pretty much superior to LCDs in every way. Efficiency, colors, contrast, you name it.

It's a brilliant display technology that Apple should've implemented since the iPhone 6.

They need the technology to age enough for it to minimally affect profit margins. OLED displays are significantly more expensive than LCDs.

There may not have been enough of them to meet an iPhone production run. OLED Displays are on a tiny fraction of the Android phones sold still today. Sure they are on the ones you hear about the most, but they are not on the ones people actually buy. Just as an example, Samsung's average selling price (ASP) is in the low $200s, but the S7 is priced over $700. The overwhelming majority of their 80 million dollar phones have to be very low cost to drag the ASP down that far and none of those low cost phones have an OLED display. Samsung may sell a few more phones overall than Apple, but S7 sales are certainly considerably less than iPhone 6S/6S+. Samsung has to be able to have enough production to sell their phones and Apple's phones.
