Samsung makes Apples A9 chips. But Samsung doesn't make any Samsung phones using the A9 chip. Apple has some OLED patents, and if Samsung makes displays for Apple that fall under those patents, they won't be able to make the identical displays for their own phones. Similar, perhaps (using slightly different technology), but not identical.

Do they not use "off-the-shelf" displays, or are they custom with tech unique to Apple?

I feel like that's somewhat different than Samsung manufacturing the already-designed-entirely-custom Apple chip designs.

Certainly plenty of good things about going OLED. Also plenty of bad. Image burn in is a problem. It's also very sensitive to water and ruined easily by it. We'll see how Apple overcomes many of the issues it brings.

I'm already laughing at the multiple 100+ page threads whining about burn-in that will be here a few months after OLED iPhone hits the street.

Just get the Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge now, why wait?

I would get it in a heartbeat if it was powered by iOS. I use facetime and iMessage to much to give it up. Plus, I like iOS more in general. But if Apple is going to be lazy and only do some tiny cosmetic changes on it's fully redesign circle, I can see myself jumping temporarily on Android.

I have never had a problem with the iPhone display. The display isn't a factor for me to purchase a phone. The OS is and iOS is superior to android.

Have you used an apple watch? It has an OLED display and the black levels and contrast blow the iPhone/iPad screens out of the water. Not to mention daylight readability. It really is the future of screens.

Yeah, but Samsung is known to hold their best, highest quality panels for themselves (See Note 4 vs Nexus 6). The Note 4's display blew away the Nexus 6 even when everyone thought it wouldn't. It's because Samsung held their best quality panels for themselves and gave Motorola/Google the lower quality panels to use in their phones. It makes business sense though, because you wouldn't want to give your best panels to your competitors.

I really don't think Apple is the type of company that would settle for a crap. Would be either the best or nothing.

2017 would be an s upgrade cycle. I can't decide if gettin an oled screen would be too big for an s cycle or exactly right

apple will not release such a big change with an S model, so still 2018

4S added Siri, decently major upgrade over the 4
5S added Touch ID, decently major upgrade over the 5
6S added 3D Touch, pretty major upgrade over the 6

I don't see why the 7S couldn't have OLED as the major upgrade, it's not THAT major.

I actually debated keeping my 6+ another year, because it is still a great phone, but OLED could change that decision for me.

OLED/mLED would definitely be a great reason to wait until next year to upgrade your 6+. Imagine a 7s+ with OLED, real wireless charging and dual-lens camera. :)

All I keep hearing in rumors is reasons to keep my 6s plus for two years, unprecedented for me (would have held out on a 5 if my mother didn't want a 4s so I ended up giving mine to her half way into the 5's lifecycle).

Not a complaint. I'm happier with my phone than I've ever been and not giving me a reason to spend money is appreciated. That said, it's still early. We will have to see.

Just a thought, what if instead of OLED Apple went micoLED. Apple acquired a company called LuxVue a while ago, that was working on microLED displays.

Yeah, that was discussed here a while back. It looks like Apple will be ready next year.

In my opinion an OLED screen is a much bigger update than any of those . Apart from touchid, many users don't actually care about Siri or 3D Touch .

It's something that could be an S update, but I would assume markerting would want it to push a new model.

My friend just got a OLED 4K tv, it's a major upgrade over led :)

Apple is and will definitely the biggest competitor of Samsung....why do you expect any different from Samsung?

I've never wanted to go swimming with or take a shower with my phone. I always think it's weird when Android people tout that. I have a co-worker who has bragged about it before. It's just weird.
It's merely a way to avoid accidental damage. IMO it's not much different than wanting a phone with a front panel more resistant to shatter. I don't have any desire to drop my phone from standard usage height (maybe 5-6 feet) but that also doesn't mean I'm against the idea of a screen technology that reduces the risk of damage, should that happen.

So, what if Apple comes with a dpi increase with the iPhone 7 with lcd and in 7s they use the same res, but with oled?

Though it is possible, they have never changed the display with S versions.

Everybody who claims to require 100% color accuracy on their 4-5 inch phone screen is an idiot, sorry!

Needs versus wants I guess. My mom uses nothing but aniphone for all of her communication at this point. She no longer had a personal computer. She takes and views all of her pictures on her iPhone. Color accuracy is important to her.

Again, this is a need versus want scenario. She's able to charge at nearly any given time of day, so battery isn't a necessity for her. It's important to realize what one person seems absolutely necessary might be a complete luxury feature to someone else.

I don't think my mom is an idiot. I don't think you are an idiot. You two just have different needs and wants. Nothing wrong with that.

As a whole id say consumers can probably benefit less from color accuracy than they could from battery life and longevity, but I don't think we should trivialize these things. This hardware certainly isn't cheap to most people and we all have the right to decide what features matter most to us.
