Ah. Hmm. Really struggling between black and red XR. Gotta go black but an Apple clear case with red phone would be hot, no? Can I even say that, I'm 36. I don't know what word to use haha.

There is a bigger "tell" here. A clear case serves no purpose beyond being "a case". It doesn't offer any particular inherent personalization. But what it DOES say is that Apple has finally decided to forgo their nonsensical "holdout" from their position that a case isn't necessary. Every survey shows that the gross majority of users put cases on their iPhones. And the drop tests prove that the iPhone isn't especially hardened by design (especially when compared to the competition). So a case IS NECESSARY. And THAT is why we got the camera "bulge". Apple has remained completely tight lipped in the face of a lot of criticism about the bulge, with a few exceptions trying to paint it as some "inspired" design idea. But that's obviously bull. The "bulge" exists only to push the lens out past the edge of the case that caused interference with the sensor's angle of vision (which first started to be an issue with cases on the iPhone 4, into the 5 design). Basically, Apple engineered the iPhone 6 (and later models) with a bulging lens protuberance because they KNEW users were going to put the device in a case; it had nothing to do with available depth in the shell for lens/sensor thickness.

(And they obviously "know" this because they know the iPhone design just can't be engineered to overcome its inherent fragility due to the materials demanded by the Design team. Glass, aluminum, and stainless steel are simply not shock *absorbing* materials, certainly not like TPU polymer. In short, Apple is selling a fragile phone using a PR message of "beauty" while obviously cognizant that the beauty needs to be covered to be long-term usable. IMHO, true design and engineering "beauty" is when the beauty is kept intact AFTER the fragility problem is mitigated. Could anyone imagine the laughter at Samsonite for selling "beautiful" luggage that required being placed in a Pelican case to be put on a plane?)

There is no "tell."

Apple has been selling cases for roughly 5 years, so it's strange you just now noticed.

In this case (see what I did there?) the case is clear because of the personalization offered by the color choices of the phone: white, black, coral, red, yellow, and blue.

On the iPhone 5c, which shared many of the color options of the Xr, Apple made an opaque case in a variety of colors with polkadot cutouts to show the color of the phone beneath.

It was largely mocked.

That's why they went clear

The ones that are $3-5 are just trash usually. They break or the finish wears off. The decent 3rd party ones are at least $15. The Apple one I got was $30.

Not true. I bet the good quality 3rd party covers are made in the same factories that make the Apple ones. I stated previously in this thread that i only had one apple cover. It came free with my first ipad mini. All the rest of my covers for my iphones & ipads have been 3rd party ones for $10 or less. Guess what? The ONLY cover that hasn’t survived is my ipad mini cover from Apple. The fabric has torn and peeled off on the corners. Just saying. Hey, I love Apple. And i gladly pay a premiuim for their electronics. But i do draw the line at covers & cases. It’s not about the money as much as its about the principle. Again, i am the biggest Apple fanboy there is, but come on...their cases aren’t leagues better than 3rd party cases like their devices & software are from the competition. They just aren’t.

Something along those lines, yes. Luckily there are many options out there and you don't have to spend the money on this if you don't want to.
And many other forums out there if you're tired of reading opinions contrary to your own on this one. Odd how some people attempt to shut down discussion...on a discussion forum.

BUT.......is rubberized, bumpered, or have anything at all to protect from a fall????? I'll wait for Tech 21 to do it's thing!

This is hilarious, but not as hilarious as the people who justify that cost when there's cases of similar or better quality at Amazon for 10 bucks.

Got a tralucent case for under $5 with complete protection at the bottom (no problems with swipe gestures), micro bubbles on the case so there are no humidity spots, has not yellowed for over a year in use and has a lightening port protector. The case fits like a glove and does the same if not more protection compared to this case for a fraction of the cost.

Talk about overcharging it’s customers. I am awaiting the iPhone socks to be released for those cold climate users.

The case I have has a good grip feel to it, never feels unbalanced in the hand when using it.

How much does it cost to make a video game? 30, maybe 40 cents? Why do they cost $60?

Parts are not what makes up the cost of everything.

I'll plant a tree, cut it down 20 years later for the wood and make a table. Because I got the tree for free, I should charge for the table according to my costs and sell it for like $1? Or should I price it according to what people would pay for a premium hand-made table, like $2000?

This comment wins the internet.

Seemed like he wasn't aware there are other options out there, just thought I would let him know.

This isn't really a discussion though.. This is people posting the same thing over and over to rag on Apple for the price of a product they have no intention of buying. A price that they have been charging for years...

There was that one guy who thought Apple producing a case for the first time this year was a significant admission on the part of Apple.

Apple quality isn't always superior. Their leather band is absolute crap. Started peeling from the end that goes into the watch after a year. Would rather buy an "inferior" band from Amazon for $20 every year. Same for the cases. Guess what, for the money difference, I can buy a new one every year and STILL save money!

I save more than you because I don't buy a case, so I win.

Nah just stipulating Apples absurd pricing on its accessories that is a blatant ripoff compared to reality. Just reassured many that Apple customers have too much money or are not wise with their money to overspend and convince themselves it’s a quality product, made of the same if not similar materials in the same/similar offshore factories.

This item probably cost ~$1 to manufacturer, not a lot of labour due to automation and no complexity maybe a QC individual on the line. Either those few factory workers are getting a hefty wage (excellent) or Apple has lost touch with reality (plausible been this way for a while, however getting worse).

If the glass is much more improved then why sell a case, this reminds me of the 6S battery case fiasco. Best battery life, however here is a battery case just to get you through the work day.

It will turn yellow just like every other clear case does. So if that bothers you, just buy the yellow phone. Problem solved.:p

I have a translucent 3rd party case for over a year, it has anti-yellowing properties (oleophobic).

Did you take it back to them? To me, that’s the difference with buying Apple. They will stand buy their products and I expect more for the price.

That said, finding something cheaper is also a value without the headache of return if it wears.

We have choices. And competition is always good for us all.
