Maybe not just yet...

damn a 7th beta...I'm so ready for the GM build and then release

Could just be unlucky old me but my device was wiped after doing an OtA update. At least it seems that way. It's telling me I have to connect via iTunes and the last time I had to do that was with the beta4 update.

There's no merging going on. iCloud is a separate service - you migrate accounts there. It seems the MobileMe migration is a different mechanic to the Apple ID migration. When you migrate MobileMe, you first migrate the Apple ID to iCloud then move the MobileMe account to that iCloud account, but apparently you can move it to the iCloud account of your choosing: including the iCloud account created when you migrated the original Apple ID.

It's not merging. For certain use cases, it's effectively merging accounts, but not technically. And there's lots of other use cases where people are still stuck with two (or more) accounts, but at least this covers one of the primary ones resulting from the misleading information when signing up for MobileMe.

i know iCloud is a seperate service, but what you originally said (if i understood it right, it's 1.30am here and i'm tired), was if you have an Apple ID with purchases on and you have a seperate mobileme account, you can combine them into 1 iCloud account, but that's explicitly stated in Apple's iCloud notes as not being possible.

your post i just quoted seems to just confuse matters....

i updated just fine on my iPhone 4.....however my friend's 3gs is completely shot now. He updated OTA and now his phone is stuck in a constant cycle of Apple logo, restart, Apple logo, restart. It won't even recognize the phone in iTunes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First post, long time lurker. I am having the exact same issue. I am a registered developer. I did the OTA update, my 3GS restarted, and now it is stuck in a cycle of apple logo, white screen, restart. I cannot connect it to iTunes, Xcode, TinyUmbrella, etc.

Looks like this is exactly the same behaviour I'm getting. FFS!

I had the same thing happen (3GS too, so maybe it has something to do with that). To fix it you will need to restore your device, so download the full ipa from the developer site. Then put your iPhone into DFU mode. If I remember correctly (Check the release notes if the following doesn't work) you need to press the home + power button together. The phone will turn off, but you need to continue holding the buttons for a few seconds longer. Just before the Apple logo appears, release the power button (Continue pressing home). If the Apple logo appears before you release the power button, restart the process. Continue holding home till the phone is recognized by iTunes.

Then you can restore as usual from iTunes.

Just tried OTA on my 3GS, the System Preferences app crashed after the download halted for a while at the "preparing for update" stage.

Update: then it rebooted and I got the same constant reboot problem as in posts above, rats.

I have tried putting it in DFU mode, but after going through the motions, it continues to go to the apple logo, white screen (barely make out the connect to iTunes icon), restart.

I will continue to mess with it.

Just try again. It took me a few tries before I got the timing right as well, but don't worry; it's definitely the exact problem I had, with the white screen and the Apple logo. Remember that you need to release the power button before the Apple logo appears.

Good luck ;)

Yep, I got it. Took a few tries. Thanks

Wow thats a lot of betas.... One would think we are really close to Apple releasing this thing. But would they really release it without the iPhone 5 announcement? That wouldn't seem to make sense.

I bet they don't drop the gold master until the iPhone 5 announcement, and save inclusion of the dictation function for that version.

There is a lot of stuff going on in iOS 5 and I am sure it will require a longer testing period. They have to make sure iCloud works perfectly as well as the iTunes syncing. And don't forget the OTA process. Some people's devices are still being bricked. These kind of things need to be fixed before it is released. I still expect one or two more betas before the GM.

Sure they would, the did with iOS 4. But they may choose to wait for the iPhone 5. Or do it as a 2 day thing. I guess we will find out.

Boot Loop

I had the same problem on my 3GS. It would show the Apple logo, then the screen would flash bright white, then the logo again. I had to manually put it into DFU mode by holding home + power for 10 seconds, then let go of power and keep holding home for another 10 seconds. Then itunes recognized it in DFU mode and I had to restore it. Hope this helps.

can'r believe i'm about to say this but...

i think iOS 5 for me is quite complete. very smooth, very fast. OTA update worked wonderfully and photo restore problem is no longer apparent. i really can not see many more if anymore betas being released before the GM.

edit: i can't spell can't

OTA upgrade is trashing the devices

So far the OTA is killing iPhone 3GS, 4 and iPad 2.... with a blinking black and white screens. Full update seems ok but it is coming down slowly. Hold off if you can kids.

I have had issues with pictures downloading from the last 2 beta on my iPad and iPhone. I tune just keep telling me that it is preparing to download(step 5 of 6) and it sticks there. New iTunes and new iOS

and my battery on my iPhone dies in 2 hours with no use!

Snappy...

Yup, I said it. Beta 7 seems a whole hell of a lot snappier. I was getting SERIOUS lag on earlier betas, but this seems to bring everything up to speed. Now, why the hell can't I get my Match to work in iTunes. I'm all developered out. What's the story?

OTA went smoothly, but all my synched photo albums are gone and media is listed but won't play. Guess I need to resync....

I had this too so I tried to go backwards to 4.3.5.
It looked like it was working but it would go all the way through and then give an error. Tried multiple times in DFU and regular restore mode.
The ONLY thing that finally worked was installing the iTunes beta 7 and then installing the full iOS5 beta 7.
