I think those who are technically inclined (read: most people who browse/post in these forums) can argue who had what feature first, what carrier is best and which phone is on the leading edge of specifications, but Apple has always been about creating an amazing user experience. What good is a 4G phone when most of the nation has little to no access to 4G? What good is multi-tasking when it chews up battery life? Apple is about refining an experience until it just works and the experience is seamless and with minimal frustration.

Apple has made an amazing brand by making the user experience the focus, not by having the fastest/most storage/-feature rich device out there. Sure if you jailbreak/tweek hack you may get more functionality out of any piece of technology... and if that's your thing? Great. Apple's target is NOT that group. Their target is not always those technically inclined. Their target is represented by the people in this ad, and it will sell a million iPhone 4 handsets.

No it isn't, "ACE". Jailbreak your phone and you can video chat over ATT. Not a carrier issue at all. It's an Apple issue. And is it a carrier issue that limits this stupid thing to iPhone to iPhone only? Take off the fanboy hat.

It's still an ATT issue because ATT never supported tethering until now (coming), but you could do that with a jailbroken phone - Apple had it in the OS but never activated it because of ATT

From the point of view of someone living outside the US, marketing "this changes everything" to sell mobile video calling feature seems pathetic.

I think you are missing the point of the quote. The point is not that this is new technology, it's that it's video chat done right, and video chat that will soon be in the hands of tens of millions of people.

Part of the reason video chat never worked before was because usually both sides didn't have a device to allow the call. But now, with the iPhone being in so many people's hands (and millions and millions in the coming years), this literally will change everything about calling.

Soon enough in 2011 carriers will be ready for this on 3G, because of the massive amount of data it uses, and developers like Skype will have access to the API. Although the EVO has this already, there is NO WAY they will sell as many phones as the iPhone.

Take your head out of the technology cloud and think logistically. For the first time ever this will be in the hands of millions.

Maybe you missed the part where they said they are gonna work on having this standardized?

I wish the whiners at least bothered to read up on the thing they were gonna whining about.

They're going to make it "standardized"? Oh well that changes everything! I'm sure it'll be a rip roaring success!

Shame it's been so lame in the parts of the world that have had video calling for years. Maybe the iFans will make it their own. The rest of the world will just titter.

Looks like the whole "iChat" thing all over again. Shame that 95% of the Internet population that you may want to call don't have iChat or an iPhone 4. If Apple really are into open standards then they need to try a bit harder.

They only say they are when it comes time to defend their idiotic stance on Flash. In practice they're all about locking down their stuff so that only they can use it. Hypocrites.

@ medicvz - Perfectly stated.

My .02

They even targeted a social group, specifically by acknowledging the high rate of intermarriage between Asian women and Caucasian men in the "Face Time" video. That may seem insignificant to some, but it's wise marketing. I noticed.

Great phone, in my opinion. Some really nice features.

Technical question, though. What's the significance of naming '5.8Mbps HSUPA' as the upload speed whereas the 3GS has no specs related to this (besides the 7.2)? Any thoughts whether the a4 or and bumps in processing will boost the 3g past 3gs benchmark times? Or is the 4 basically going to be a fast on 3g as the 3gs? Thoughts? Thanks

Emotional

Am I the only one who cried just a little with that touching music and heart-felt emotion....(sniff, sniff) :D

I wasn't jumping out of my seat when they first announced the new iphone, but the more and more I read about it and see the pictures, the more and more excited I'm getting about it!!! It's so thin and the glass on the front and back is going to be sexy. I'm thinking that I just might rock her naked!!

I'm not sure what some people were expecting, but I think they did a pretty good job. I think it'll be much more impressive in person. I'll be pre-ordering mine on the 15th.

Sorry, not a hater of Apple as I'm a fan, but video calling 'done right' is a little silly imo. It's just two screens and a decent enough refresh rate over the network. And this year at least it won't be done right; you can only video call other iOS4 users with FaceTime (as I understand) and only over wifi. That's just insane. As I stated earlier, here in the uk we've been able to video-call cross network (forget wifi!) for years now and with decent camera quality, i dont see how FaceTime changes everything as it's still just video calling.

US network problems really irritate non-US apple fans as it has nothing to do with us and we'd prefer all network talk to be limited to a small section of the forum.

They said 3 years ago they were going to "work on" figuring out why the carrier they chose was dropping all the calls. How'd that work out for us. Take off the fanboy hat. If its not delivered day 1, dont hold your breath waiting for it.

Because Apple likes to make products that actually work. Everyone would get pissed if the video chat was enabled but most carriers couldn't handle the traffic, and this would result in less sales of the iPhone because of bad user experience and word of mouth, even though the REAL blame would be on the carriers. Now why would a company who is trying to make money do this to themselves?

Use logic instead of relying on fanboy instincts and emotions to run your arguments.

Wow, someone's been drinking the Kool Aid.

95 percent of people i know don't have an iphone? Most people i know use an iphone.

They make it sound like video calling were a revolutionary idea they came up with, when in reality they are about 5 years behind and you cant even call people who don't have an iphone, never mind the fact that i need to be on connected to wifi...

Yeah, yeah, yeah and it doesn't have an local gravity cancellation unit installed so it floats to the ground if you drop it too.

However, it is hot. Looks cool and gets you phone numbers at bars. The drunk calling on this is going to be awesome! Imagine a video version of Texts from Last Night?

Surely this means that iOS 4 is resolution independent?

Will be interesting to see what this opens up for developers.

It can’t be an Apple issue if no other carrier or cellphone maker has done it in a widespread adoption method. It’s people like you, who jailbreak their iPhones, that cause AT&T some concern over letting this feature run wild on their networks. Right now it’s only a handful that do jailbreak, so it’s not an issue, but that’s not to say that Apple hasn’t tried to get you off the network in order to increase stability of the network (or as AT&T would have it anyway). You can bet every Tom, Dick, and Harry will be scrambling to use FaceTime as soon as all of their friends get an iPhone 4. In other words, Apple isn’t reinventing iChat. Apple is reinventing how we use the feature...on our phones.

Take off your dunce cap.

Catering to apologist fanboys like yourself is why the iPhone is so limited. And no, I don't jailbreak. I dont think I should have to jailbreak or root a phone to get what I need out of it. That's why I'm now with Android. I dont need to root it to make it an awesome product. With the iPhone, if you dont jailbreak it, you're stuck with a very average "dumb" phone that cant maintain phone calls.

how bout you spew your vomit in a more constructive way. such as in yer lap after ur done reading up on existing facts. mmm k?

The only thing non constructive about my post was that I objectified Apple.....

You're the only one spewing vomit here.

Do any of these characters ever change their clothes? Forstall is always in some spacey-looking black thing, then there's the bald guy in the grey t-shirt... And of course there's the black turtleneck with jeans...

Is this planned? Are these guys told to get out their outfits every time a new product video is made? Ha ha. It's pretty funny...

You have a point. I thinks most senior exec's public persona is staged.

I can't believe the public Steve Ballmer is the real one. I think they have a monkey suit ready for him when he walks out the door.

Understandable.

But in the USA, which Apple targets as its prime market and makes the most money, video chat really hasn't been much of a real thing for anyone before. ESPECIALLY for people who have no technical knowledge of phones, etc.

I do agree that maybe they should have at least let international people have it with 3G and WiFi. At least then Apple would put the blame here on AT&T again. But people here are starting to blame Apple as well because they haven't moved to Verizon yet even though they know that AT&T hold them back. VERY frustrating for US customers.

Anyone who wants is free to adopt the face time open standard.

Yeah they have, when 3G exploded in the UK most people had a video chat phone. They just didn't bother to use it.

This is Kool Aid max strength right here.

You're not thinking logically - you've just taken Jobs' quote and repeated it.

If 10's millions of people have a video chat phone, it doesn't change your life. Those 10's millions on people aren't going to randomly call you with FaceTime.

You and your small circle of mates will have video chat and that's the end of it. Same as it was in the UK, only we weren't restricted to wifi like how this will be on release. But people still didn't use it.

Sorry to burst your bubble but video calling isn't that popular. There's been news stories etc regarding it over here when it first 'came out', its because it's not as impersonal as a voice call, there's a privacy issue regarding letting people know your immediate location and also people (esp women) aren't always dressed/looking good enough to be on camera.

Video calling WON'T be a phenomenon. It's a bit of a novelty that's rarely used when you're out and about.

And as NOBODY looks good doing video calls, you won't be 'pulling' girls with it.
