Where the hell is the video of the keynote from today?

They're still editing out the "technical issues" Steve had onstage today. Either that, or they decided to scrap putting it online altogether because of that... :p

Edit: Whoops, looks like the keynote is now online...

You'll be able to chat... anywhere there's "WiFi"...

Blame AT&T ?

Well blame on both A's
I'm sure ATT did not know about this feature until very recently. Aside from the leaks and rumors nothing official until today. So Apple has to wait on ATT to decide how they are going to charge for this and fully test it on their overloaded network.
So we'll probably get that next June/July for iOS 5, seeing as tethering has taken its sweet time.

It did put me off. I'm going to get a nexus one. This video is painful. I've been using video calling for at least 4 years already. iPhone4 changes nothing.

lol, get your outdated nexus 1.

People, it isn't until iPhone 4 that you will see mainstream users use video calling features. Sure you may have that 160x120 video calling back 4 years ago - and who were you calling?

Let's be realistic. Apple makes it happen for everyone. I'm more curious to hear about the teenage video sexting that will happen. iPhone 4 really does change everything.

The build quality alone of the iPhone 4 is already a bullet point for me to buy it.

The 3GS I have is fantastic. The iPad I have is awesome. The iPhone has a better resolution screen and also the iPad's A4 processor, it's a win-win for everyone.

Show me a device that even compares to the iPhone 4's build quality? THERE IS NOTHING ON THE MARKET THAT has the same build quality like the iPhone 4. Front and rear glass that is so durable and virtually scratchproof.

I was so tempted to jump to Sprint after AT&T announced their June 7 raping plans. But I held off to see the new confirmed iPhone 4 because seriously, if the EVO 4G was so good, I'd be over on Sprint right now. I have seen the EVO 4G at the sprint store, played with it for about 5 minutes - and I can confirm without a doubt, I would not even give up my 3GS for that phone.

Sure the screen is gigantic - but too large - because it's just bulky and really not that great. It's plastic fantastic and I don't care about the specs because my 3GS "feels" so much more fluid and that EVO 4G has too many strange options that just feels like it's trying too hard to show off what it can do - and clearly, it doesn't do anything great; the iPhone really does everything great.

I don't think I can hang with android - it's seriously not that great and with the new iPhone 4, I will stick with AT&T but at least I will enjoy my expensive _ass phone.

Credit to apple on the upgrade, a very good upgrade. But the marketing spin they put to it is embarassing

The way they were bangin on about the Video chat feature was embarassing. Jetsons? Makes you wonder if they lived under a rock all these years when even the mid end phones have been carrying this feature (that too on 3G let alone wifi)!

To be fair I will get the nexus one (not really out-dated yet is it?) or probably the HTC desire for the same reason I got my early 2010 mbp without worrying about the next 'magical' upgrade. It's a tool and I will get the tool that suits me best when I need it. Android is a better offer for my needs in my eyes. I have no intention of joining the unwinnable technology rat race.

I have no doubt the iphone4 is a decent phone and it looks fairly solid. I don't really care about the extra res screen or 720p video because if I want to watch movies I'll watch on projector with 5.1 and if I want to record video I'll use a prosumer video camera or rent a red one. The only other time I would want to record video where these aren't an option is on my bike where I can use my 1080p helmet cam.

I don't particularly like using video chat and can't see that changing. Need it for work sometimes but rarely. 4 years ago I could call most of my friends with video calls... you remember that wonderful and magical device called the Nokia N95??!? lol

I'm with you on the sexting tho ;)

Its not new - but never seen anyone making videophones work on a phone platform with Apple's marketshare.

Apple didn't invent MP3 either - but they did make a player that was so simple that grandparents could use it.

There is a difference between things that are possible and things that are accessible.

Simple question - how many video calls were made by video-phone last month?
Is it easy to do?
Is it popular?

How many do we think will be made the month after the new phone comes out?

I'm just worried that they were blown away when the made the video call
Next they will be claiming they were blown away when they transfered a file over bluetooth! You might have a video where they will be going "You know I had my phone, Phil had his and we just clicked a button and boom.. my file was on his phone. No wires. It was like magic!" Seriously these videos are embarassing!

I am by no means a fanboy. the only apple product I have ever owned in my life is an iphone 3g. My wife has an original iphone still.

i am pretty sure we will both upgrade to Iphone 4's. Being able to video chat when i am away on business and see my 17 month old is pretty priceless.

The camera seems way better than what either of us have. I don't even have a digital camera so what i get on my phone is what i have.

Also, both our batteries are hurting. They don't hold charges nearly long enough at this point so it is pretty much time for an upgrade.

my biggest concern is the glass. Just how strong and scratch resistant is it?

using buttons to take picture/video

sorry if this has been covered, but does the new iphone allow you to use one of the volume buttons to take a picture. It seemed like a no-brainer but I didn't see anything on this. The on-screen button has always been tricky to keep the phone still - more so if you give it to someone who has never handled an iphone before.

Please iFanboys

The EVO looks like a cheap toy next to the new iPhone.

I suppose the unibody aluminium HTC legend looks cheap next to iphone 4 as well? HTC cant innovate. I suppose they were copying Apple 7 design specs

And that's actually out on the market right now.

Also what people are not getting is its the overtop believing their own hype "it's not just another product.... i cant believe this is happening... changing things.. again bla bla" that makes people so sick.

Have got the cash ready to buy one outright soon as it drops, but right now they are about 5% ahead in terms of tech on the competition in some areas e.g. screen, and still lagging others.

Froyo is technologically advanced and HTC will have multiple phones that blitz the iphone before next June.. you can be sure of that. Dual core snapdragons, with the new Dalvik JIT and V8--powered browser??? Yes please.

Though I agree for moms and pops and grandma all that power would be overkill. Though people will um for joy when they do arrive on IPhone in 2012.

But for example....LED is just the bare minimum to maximise thier profit. Its is not high tech there have been Xenon flsh on SE since 2005-- on the k800i's, that took Great pics that everyone praised. (There were no UI complaints)

They will drop Xenon flash in iphone 5, call it "flsh done right... I can properly take picture in the dark.... its like im special ops" and fanboys will cream over it. It used to be exaggeration but apple really are full of it.

AND THE BIGGEST JOKE: Video chat "done right"?? Iphone 4 to Iphone 4... WIFI ONLY??? Event if every iphone 4 user used it, whats that.... max 50% of their worldwide 15% phone market share??

Wow, way to take a comparison between the EVO and the iPhone and create a strawman argument out of it.

People are complaining that they've had video calling on their old Nokia phones for years. But tell me something, how many of you have been making video calls for years on your old Nokias? Apple might not be the first at implementing certain tech but they tend to do it better than everyone else. Watch the use of video calls skyrocket now.

Can this new phone now perform a basic function as deleting an individual call without having to delete the whole freakin list? Otherwise the phone looks great.

wow

Ok, Apple have a midas touch with such things and I'm sure FaceTime is a beautiful piece of software.

But how about my thought that people don't actually like to make video calls due to privacy - not wanting people to know/see your immediate surroundings (can you imagine your other half demanding to see where you are for example) and also not being comfortable having to appear on camera at any given time (after a long day at work or when you're in your joggers and baggy top). Sure there are times you'll want to use it, but it's not going to change the way you use a phone in the way it's being promoted.

I vividly remember a bbc news story where they surveyed people in London regarding this, and not many people thought it was something they'd use often, if at all. It's all about being seen, sort of an anti-cctv stance on things.
Can you imagine getting a video-call from the police/bank, demanding to see you for identification purposes. Bloody annoying!

If every new development is hailed as being ground breaking, I think Apple will lose credibility. I'd hate to see that happen but as we can see from the trollers and Android supporters, it's started.

Are you happily/seriously married or are you married at all? What's wrong with the other half wanting to see where you are unless you were not righteous or want to hide things from your soulmate who will be with you for the rest of your life?

I'm pretty sure it is 30% stronger than the current iPhone, at least that's what they put in the spec.

I agree with you that being able to video chat with your love ones while you're away is priceless. This is why the iphone 4 will make many family happy. I just wish that military personels can use this feature while they're fighting for our freedom. This will be the best.

The difference between Apple and every other developer is that they live and more importantly make their own reality. They always do what they've done best, ignorant at times, yes, but all the same they do what they do.

Are video phone calls on the mobile a widely established feature? Yes.
Are they widely used? No.

I can think of some reasons including my own personal experiences:
1) way too expensive, bad carrier integration
2) ****** quality
3) too damn laggy on a 3g network compared to wifi (i dunno im in Aus we might be behind)

Iphone 4 will revolutionise the stale market, because people will buy the iphone 4, people can video phone call for free and in great picture quality. Carriers will eventually develop better plans for video conferencing on all phones because they see the market possibility, because Apple shows the world that its a lucrative and viable option. And i think that's why it was important that (at least at the beginning) Apple had this exclusive dealing with AT&T because a good phone is not just about WHAT it can do, it's all about it being viable, easy to attain and cheap for the consumer.

Apple lives in it own reality. If Apple succeeds (as they have been doing in the last few years) people will follow Apple. That is all.

I agree iPhone 4 will make video calling popular but I just disagree with the way that they are making it sound like it has never been done before.

Yes back in early 2004 video calling was expensive (50p) per minute. But call quality was quite good, obviously not compared to todays cameras, but at the time it was using the best cameras available.

As for video calling over 3G I didnt experience very much lag. I remember a friend calling me up when he was at a motor show and I did a video call for around 30 mins and it ran fine over 3G. In terms of 3G networks the UK was one of the first countries to get the technology. Just a shame we're lagging behind in terms of developing 4G lol.

Wow, way to take a comparison between the EVO and the iPhone and create a strawman argument out of it.

Yes I agree i wasnt really directed at you...just similar comments about HTC being poor at design which is just BS. though not sure that the iphone looks all that more expensive.

And it is still put to shame by the legend which didnt have the 5 minute video of guys evangelising like its the second coming of JC "Ïts..it's...so...so.. not another product" give me a break.

Anyways without the competition from HTC Apple would never have put out the retina displays etc., not for another 2 years:)

He's got a valid point, but the bigger reason is why would you need to see the other person if they are in the supermarket, in the bus or at home just doing nothing interesting. Make no mistake for the purpose displayed in the promo video, facetime is awesome. I know from experience using webcams in Skype.

The other inconvenience of video calls is ambient noise. You really can't use this tech in any slightly loud place or it will be painful as the other person can hear everything that goes in the bar, restaurant, public transport, vehicle noise, baby crying or whatever much louder than in a normal call.

Still, I'm happy that Apple gives the consumer the opportunity. Shame about not following standards so you only have the capability to do this iphone<->iphone.

The First Song

Does anyone know the song that is used in the very beginning and the very end of the video?

And it is still put to shame by the legend which didnt have the 5 minute video of guys evangelising like its the second coming of JC "Ïts..it's...so...so.. not another product" give me a break.

Yes, HTC just calls the Legend "fine art in pocket-sized dimensions. This sculpted alloy beauty is both a visual inspiration and a potent conduit to your social life...blah, blah, blah."

It's called advertising. Everybody does it.

And how is the iPhone 4 "put to shame" by the Legend, exactly?
