This is gonna be perfect for school, No more carrying around an entire notebook to take a page worth of notes and reading my e-books (i bought all e-book versions). This is what i have been waiting for.. thank god i didnt buy a joojoo....

I enjoy waiting for the fanboy lingo to sprout up in posts. So all other products that don't have an Apple on them are "Clunky" huh?? I bet you think they're "Crappy" too, don't you??? Hahahahahaha I bet you think the iPad is "elegant" and "delicious" too???

I love my iPhone and my Macs, but this thing won't do 1% of what my cheap HP netbook will do. Thanks to people like you (who would buy a left nostril inhaler for $500 if Apple produced it), Apple will sell some, but it's not for me (and judging from the reviews in the real world, not too many others are impressed)..

It's not a "game changer" or a "revolutionary device", it's just a blown up iPod touch that runs a bunch of little "applets" and browses the web.

I'll be on a jobsite with my "cheap and Clunky" HP Mini, running Primavera Project Planner, printing engineering drawings out of AutoCad, doing a video conference with Skype, and typing reports in Microsoft office.

Have a nice time sitting at home enjoying your iPad running "Ifart"...

Game changer..

Sensitive much? You need a chill pill. I never even mentioned a Netbook, but apparently without me even mentioning it you became defensive and started attacking me with snide remarks.. Enjoy your uber low powered HP snotbook. :D

PROS:

IPS screen (nice)
$500 isnt too bad of a price
Nice battery (10 hours)

First, that screen is garbage. Colour reproduction may be awesome for graphic designer but thats useless as the specs on the iPad are crap which means it will NEVER run anything remotely close to something like Photoshop for a professional to even consider.

Second, the screen resolution is also crap. I've seen smaller screen geting higher resolution.

Third, the fact that its not e-ink means your eyes are gonna hurt after a few hours of use, assuming it even lasts that long, and we all know apple's history with portable devices and battery life; pathetic.

Fourth, Amazon's Kindle battery lasts for 7 DAYS. The iPad gets a measly 10 hours.

Fifth, Amazon's Kindle costs half the price.

Now, I know comparing it to a kindle is ridiculous but thats basically the main thing people will do with these devices; reading. Surfing web, checking maps, etc. can all be done with your phone nowadays, if you even dare to think of getting the iPad, its not at all a far cry to assume you got an iPhone (for some reason, i think its crap).

Steve Jobs initially compared the iPad to a netbook and said theyre not good at anything. Well, lemme tell you something kids, the iPads price starts at 500 bucks. A netbook with better specs, large storage space, a real tactile keyboard, expansion connections galore and above all else, the choice (something apple isnt comfortable with; choice) to install any operating system and software I want, is a way better and practical deal. I wouldnt have an issue spending 300 dollars on a basic netbook, but for nearly double you get an iPad that in reality doesnt do anything, NOT EVEN FLASH! Especially considering when steve 'big brother' jobs said it was an extraordinary web surfing experience on it, LOL.

This Presentation is Fantastic!!

Steve shows a website with flash failing, then they go on to show a great presentation of iWork to make presentations on a device that you cant hook up to anything to present them to.. yet, im sure there will "be an accessory for that"

This is really a nice device, however it is the original ipod touch version with no camera, the ipadS will be great, prob have dual cameras, and prob a usb port for people with extra usb drives, and maybe an hdmi out someday?

So it is real nice but could be alot better, I wanted the iphone cause it was everything i used in my pocket, this isnt something I desire as much but it has a great future.

The way I look at it, a 64GB SSD version with the 3 iwork programs, the case and keyboard dock are gonna run you over a 1k.

so its like a macbook air, with a touch interface and no keyboard, and without a full mac OS, or a 10" ipod touch.

I wont make the same mistake with the ipad i did with the iphone 2g, ill wait 6 month when they release the ipadS.

I think a purchase of the HP MINI 311 is better, U can dualboot windows 7 and run OSX, it has an hd screen at 720p, a full keyboard, it is 11.6 in and weighs 3 lbs, plus it has the most amazing graphics card with the nvidia ion in a netbook, plus it has full 1080p hdmi out.. no touch though..

1) IPS display is one of the best display technologies you can get for text clarity which is one of the most common functions you'll be using on iPad. It's also the best for viewing angles, which is something you want when it's a device that you'll be holding most of the time. You don't want to be constantly holding the thing at a certain angle, that's stupid. Color reproduction isn't just for photographic work but for watching movies and so on. No netbook on the market has an IPS display because it's the most expensive screen you can buy (among E-IPS/H-IPS).

2) While the resolution isn't a wide-screen one, most people are going to be fine with that resolution, remember it's a mass market device for all type of people including elderly. Most of those people that I know don't like working with high resolutions at all. They prefer bigger and clear text than high DPI, they can't read without straining with high resolutions. Which is once again, one of the primary function of this device, for reading also.

3) LCD isn't going to hurt unless you're in a dark room. People read on LCD all day long and doesn't bitch about that part because they are usually in a good lighting environment. Adjust the lighting to match the brightness on the display, it'll be fine. People read books all the time on iPhone/iPod touches as well, ebook readers app are one of the high usage apps on those devices.

4) That has to do with the screen, and it last for more than 7 days, it can last a month of usage. People are not going to care, trust me, they are used to charging their devices daily now with their cell phones, laptops and so on. People are not going to be reading stuff on iPad for more than 10 hours in a day, it's an acceptable compromise for high quality color LCD.

5) Amazon's Kindle DX cost 489$ which is almost the same price. Can't really compare 6" screen device that only does one single function to a 10" device that can do multiple things and say it cost half. Not really a fair comparsion.

Jobs is talking about doing certain tasks much better than laptops and netbooks, he was wrong on trying to say it does better than laptops/netbooks/iphone in general but he was right that it does things better than them at certain tasks.

Web browsing is usually a better experience with multi-touch, many people would like to zoom into certain parts of a site to read, something that multi-touch does better than laptop or netbook. Ebooks, not comfortable to read on a laptop or netbook that has keyboard in the way and not to mention heavier as well as heat issues.

But that's beside the point, if you need the ability to install any OS and software you want with real keyboard, large storage and better spaces; nobody is holding a gun to your head to force you to buy an iPad. Netbooks will be around for a long time.

Majority of people don't care about OS installation, will get their software from the App store, storage probably won't matter to them as majority of people are starting to move toward cloud services, and majority of them probably don't care about expansion connections. We're talking about general people who doesn't do much and just wants a simple device with a nice screen that does multi-touch and works right out of the box.....in this case... iPad is just perfect for them.

If he's got a netbook pumping out AutoCAD and using photoshop, I would say his computer is pretty powerful.

For me the most significant part of this announcement is not the iPad, it's what's powering it.

Apple's own mobile chip may have repercussions for the Iphone/pod, and going by the reviews the chips is blazingly powerful.

Ignore those people that say "1GZ" doesn't cut it. Processors have moved on from the era of hertz meaning power. Now we must look at cache access, size and RAM chip speed.

It will be interesting putting the Coretex9 against this, and comparing mobile technology. Let's see if PA Semi are worth their salt. Initial reports suggests they certainly are.

Fifth, Amazon's Kindle costs half the price.

Really???? Which Kindle are you referring to? The one with the 6" screen that's 4" smaller than Apple's for $259? Yeah, that's half price. Oh oh, oh maybe the Kindle with the 10" screen which is the same size as the iPad and that's $10 less than the iPad and less than 1% of the features of the iPad. Yeah, THAT one.

I didn't think it was worth it until they got to the part that talks about the Apps. Brushes will shine with a larger screen. Also, iWork looked flat out amazing. MS should come out with a touch screen version of office or they could lose some of their consumer market in the future.

This isn't a device for audio/video/web/software content creation or to run niche software like AutoCad but it seems to have most of the core activities covered at a decent price point and with style.

I'm not sure what the hold up is for a mobile version of Flash to come to the iProducts but Adobe is really missing out on this market. Also, I guess the omission of the camera was a cost consideration? Next, year I guess. Probably, the horsepower isn't there for video chatting anyway...

It’s all about the software.

Apple used to be the leader in the computer game until Gates made his infamous deal with IBM. That deal launched the IBM-compatible craze and 3rd party software companies into a software-making frenzy. Apple’s OS fell to number 2 because Windows based computers had a much larger library of software titles.

Steve jobs learned a painful lesson then, but he learned it well. It’s all about the software.

Just look at the iPhone. It’s the software, the apps, that drive iPhone sales and loyalty, and the lack of apps is why every new “iPhone killer” fails. If a new phone doesn’t come with 140,000 apps then it can’t touch the iPhone.

The iPad from the get go will be able to run most of those 140,000 apps. Widows based slate PCs will be able to run Widows 7 and …ok, an eBook reader, and… oh that’s right, NOTHING ELSE!
Just because Windows 7 is touch compatible it DOESN’T mean software titles are! That means that software companies are going to have to re-write their titles specifically for a touch interface. It will be a slow and expensive project – for those companies that decide to participate. Many will wait to see if tablet sales warrant their commitment. AND when consumers see that there are no software titles for these slate PCs they won’t buy them.

Every app in iTunes is written specifically for a touch interface. It would have been foolish for Apple to ignore this and produce an OS that couldn’t run these titles. So of course the iPad is a big iPod Touch Plus – anything else would fail miserably. As it is the iPad CAN’T fail (at least for the consumer), because even if they halt production of the iPad after the first year you’ll still be able to download every new app that comes out! This takes the risk out of buying an iPad.

I say don’t naysay the iPad – or at least hold off until you see what new apps are written for this thing. After all it really IS all about the software!

What if I want to take images from the internet to use with my keynote or iwork document? I sure as hell dont have a picture of a giraff in my photo gallery.

You can hold down on an image in the iPhone version of Safari and Save or Copy an image now so I'm sure you will still be able to... I just tried it on the front page of the NYT. Now to photoshop some giant ears on Obama. :p

Oh and you can use Photoshop.com, Photogene, or Photoforge to edit you pics...

I fail to see how a touch enabled version of Office would be far more useful? It's pretty yes, but a word processor is a word processor, no matter how pretty it is.

Personally I think the hype around this thing was at fever pitch and it was never going to quite live up to expectations.

Bottom line is that it's an oversized iPod Touch. Not really groundbreaking innovation on the part of Apple so I'm not sure why they're jumping up and down about it. I wouldn't buy one for myself but it's certainly something that the GLW (Good Lady Wife) would use. She never does anything more than surfing and emailing on her computer and she's recently expressed an interest in an eReader.

For me the lack of Flash is a killer. I loved the way that during the keynote Jobs surfed to a website and there was the little missing plugin icon for Flash. I can see it now, the GLW screaming that she can't see the latest shoes/dress/thingamajig she wanted to buy and someone's stuck a blue block of Lego on the screen. Time to let your personaly problems with Flash go Mr Jobs, the rest of us need it!

This Just In!!!!

Steve Jobs has just announced that Apple is tired of the whining and will be willing to lose money and give a free iPad to each person that cries loud enough that this tablet is not what THEY wanted. In related news he has also apologized to all the iPhone pundits who still fill it's just "not right" for their needs. Listen up folks.....it's like this. If you don't like the iPhone? Don't buy it. Think the iPad is stupid? Fine.....don't buy it either. But guess what? 35 million folks so far are enjoying their iPhones. If it's not for you that's great? But to come on here and post opinions of how stupid Apple is for not making it YOUR way? Or saying this thing is useless junk? Who do you think looks more stupid? Apple? Which is one of the most profitable companies of any kind in this recession or you who are sitting here giving out shoulda, woulda, couldas? Whoops.......This late breaking news just in........Steve Jobs and company just said they will call YOU next time they have an idea and try to get a feel for what we all REALLY need since you know what's best for us.

OK so i waited all day to see this and it loaded flawlessly and played without hiccup.

I would say that I am neither overly impressed or disappointed in the product. I can certainly see the uses, I can see me on the couch surfing away at all the commercials on tv and looking up products without having to go running up stairs to may Imac. the interface looks good, much like the iphone, but what gets me a little is the memory, I get its not supposed to be a full time computer but personally i hate switching content from my mac to anything i just want it all and access to it if i want it whenever. My itunes is approx 70gb. it would just be nice to carry it all with you at once. I get it that you don't need that much stuff with you but when you feel like watching something or listening to something i just don't want to think if i remembered to transfer it or not. I think it looks like a good start but even still i would like to see what they do in another year or so with it?? Maybe it is just time to bite the bullet and get that Mac Book Pro.

Copy and Paste?

Anyone notice there wasn't any demo of copy and paste? Doh! Maybe in 2012 iPad OS 3.0.

I was already to get in line for this. But frankly, I think I might wait for the next revision: you know, the one with iChat, and a Camera.

This is a big iTouch/iPhone. And i don't see this as a compliment to my AIR, wherever I could bring the iPad, I can bring my air....

I am SOOOO bummed about no new iPhone OS!!!

I didn't say it was any more useful, just that MS is missing out on market share if they don't make their own version. There will be people who choose a touch tablet for sure in the future either Mac or PC, even if it is purely for superficial reasons...

The interface was pretty amazing on iWork in the demo though. We are pretty close to what was shown in Minority Report in 2002.

Anyone notice there wasn't any demo of copy and paste? Doh! Maybe in 2012 iPad OS 3.0.

I'm not sure if you are serious or not? The iPhone/iPod already has that so why wouldn't the iPad?

Yep. Me too. But have you priced out flash memory drives? Even pedestrian 16GB USB sticks will cost you $32 at a Costco. So, you'd need 100GB, I'm thinking add $200 retail or $100 cost to Apple. And that's pretty close to the pricing structure. I think they milked everything out of the hardware they could to make a useable mini computer at low cost (for them). And if you consider it costs as much as the original 4Gb iphone, it's pretty good price. Maybe not for the market though? That's the big issue. It's definitely cool. It's defiinitely not terribly expensive. But does it hit the right market for features and price. You said you'd probably opt for the macbook. Others might say they don't want to carry another device and that an iPhone or iPod Touch fits their bill. But the fact that it's an add-on to another computer kinda negates the memory thing unlike a netbook which might be someone's only computer if they're a casual user. And if they're that casual, they could opt for one of these. Although I'm not sure you can really use it without a PC to set it up at least at the start.

It definitely is a new category. Someone once did a mockup of the new iMac years ago in anticipation of what it would be. The mockup I saw had a tablet that looked just like this that slid out of the back of the iMac screen. This is kinda like that. A to go extension. I wonder if it can sync important documents of any kind like iWork stuff. Sync my home folder to the iPad or something.

What if I want to take images from the internet to use with my keynote or iwork document? I sure as hell dont have a picture of a giraff in my photo gallery.

you can transfer photos from a camera or sd card using the Camera Connection Kit to the iPad. Also currently you can save images from the internet on the iPhone to Photos by touch/hold and menu will pop up.

I'm disappointed and hopeful at the same time.

I think it's a little shortsighted and superficial to call this simply a large ipod touch. Yeah the homepages look the same, but the apps, just the few that were demoed, were much improved. Calendar, email, safari, photos, maps: all these were vastly different and more functional than those of an iPod touch. Imagine what other devs can do with their apps.

That Courier demo, which was awesome, can nearly be replicated on the iPad. Journal Apps, photo editing apps, video apps, etc can all be just as improved as the demoed apps.

That said, my disappointment lies in the fact that this is a docked device. Even if all I want to do is browse, email, music, edit/organize photos, game, and journal (all the BASIC things, that 90% of people do), I still need another computer. I can't sync my iPhone or iPod to it (that's a biggy!), I don't fully know if one can organize iTunes with it, and I don't know if one can organize photos (though there is an accessory for camera connection).

So I can't recommend this to my parents or even my girlfriend or other people that just need a computer for these basic things, which is most of us, because you still need another computer. And this confuses me because, when talking about the price-point, they said the wanted everyone to have one, but none of these people will need to get one because THEY STILL NEED A LAPTOP.

Fortunately, the fixes to make this a perfect, stand alone device that covers 90% of people needs, are simple: let people sync iPhones/iPods to it and include even a simple version of iLife that includes (if you can't already do it) the ability to organize music and photos. Done. That's it.

Though, I still need the ability to download torrents...

Maybe, and most likely, Apple doesn't want this to be a replacement for a mac but that's kinda what they seemed to imply at some points.
